Twenty-one penned female sheep were infected with a high dose of nematodes (200,000 Trichostrongylus vitrinus and 25,000 Ostertagia circumcincta) during first incisor development when aged 7-8 months. Three sheep were infected with 200,000 T. vitrinus only; 10 sheep were untreated. Anorexia, lassitude and severe diarrhoea were seen in 14 of the infected sheep after 21-26 days. Anthelmintic was given to sheep showing undue distress to end the infection and to all remaining sheep on day 33. Animals were killed at 3 stages: during the infection, at intervals during later tooth development, and at

The incidence of dental disease among people in developing countries today raises questions about the variation in the oral health of prehistoric populations. Considering these questions, we offer observations describing several types of dental disease which occurred among certain prehistoric populations of Hungary. The dental remains of 162 individuals recovered from seven sites of the Neolithic, Copper, and Bronze Age periods were examined for evidence of caries, hypoplasia, and periodontal disease. Appropriate methods were used to describe and record these dental lesions. The incidence of d

A sound nutritional state is extremely important for the maintenance of healthy oral tissues as well as the body in general. Dentistry is, by nature, related to nutrition and dental practitioners should inform their patients and the public of its importance. For this reason, dentists should have a much broader background in nutrition and food sciences.

A patient has been studied in whom an atypical ichthyosiform erythroderma was associated with congenital neurosensory deafness, vascularization of the corneas progressing to blindness, alopecia totalis, abnormalities of the teeth and nails, and postnatal growth deficiency. Twelve other patients with a similar pattern of malformation have been reported previously. This syndrome appears to represent a distinct disorder with a pattern of inheritance which is most likely autosomal recessive.

OBJECTIVES: Age-related differences in orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) and mechanical force-induced osteogenesis have been reported. Mitophagy plays a crucial role in bone metabolism and various age-related diseases, and BCL2-interacting protein 3 (BNIP3) is a mitophagy-related receptor. This study aimed to elucidate the role of mitophagy associated with BNIP3 on age-related changes in the orthodontic tension-driven osteogenic differentiation of periodontal ligament stem cells.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) from adolescent (6-week-old) and adult (8-month-old

Dental caries is among the most prevalent infectious chronic diseases worldwide, yet localized acidogenic activity associated with cariogenic processes often remains difficult to visualize at the whole-dentition level. This highlights the urgent need for analytical tools that enable imaging of localized acidity-related changes. However, current methods, such as salivary test strips and hand-held pH meters, remain limited to single-point or averaged measurements, lacking the spatial resolution required to visualize the distribution of acidic microenvironments. Herein, we present a conceptual ap

BACKGROUND: Oral diseases remain a major public health challenge globally and in Hungary, where untreated caries, periodontal disease, and edentulism are highly prevalent. Diet is a key modifiable determinant of oral health, yet the cumulative impact of multiple unfavorable nutritional behaviors on self-perceived oral health has not been assessed at the national level in Hungary, nor have population-attributable fraction (PAF) estimates been reported.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed data from 5146 adults in the 2019 Hungarian European Health Interview Survey. A six-component nutr

Dental caries is among the most prevalent chronic diseases. It arises from bacterial biofilm formation on tooth surfaces due to metabolic activity. Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) is a key pathogen implicated in the development of dental caries. As bacterial resistance to conventional treatments increases, there is a growing interest in using novel compounds that possess antibacterial and antibiofilm properties. This study evaluated the effect of chitosan-arginine nanoparticles (CS-Arg NPs) and sodium fluoride (NaF) on inhibiting S. mutans' growth. After synthesizing CS-Arg NPs, their size, m

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is a common chronic inflammatory condition of the supporting tissues of the teeth that destroys the tissues and, if left untreated, results in tooth loss. Accurate and early classification of periodontal bone loss through dental radiographs, such as orthopantomograms (OPGs), is crucial for effective diagnosis and treatment planning.
OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to evaluate and compare 3 deep learning architectures-InceptionV3, InceptionV4, and ResNet-50-for classifying OPGs into distinct grades of dental features characterised by periodontal bone loss.

Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) is a keystone pathogen in periodontitis, a highly prevalent disease manifested by chronic inflammation of the periodontium, alveolar bone resorption and tooth loss. During periodontitis pathobionts such as Pg can enter the bloodstream and growing evidence correlates periodontitis with increased risk of cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. However, the mechanism by which immune cells respond to Pg challenge in vivo remains elusive. Pg produce aggressive proteolytic virulence factors termed gingipains which not only provide nutrients necessary for bacteria

Pediatric dental image analysis faces critical challenges in disease detection due to missing or corrupted pixel regions and the unique developmental characteristics of deciduous teeth, with current Latent Diffusion Models (LDMs) failing to preserve anatomical integrity during reconstruction of pediatric oral structures. We developed two novel biologically-inspired loss functions integrated within LDMs specifically designed for pediatric dental imaging: Gum-Adaptive Pixel Imputation (GAPI) utilizing adaptive 8-connected pixel neighborhoods that mimic pediatric gum tissue adaptive behavior, and

The common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) is a valuable model for studying aging due to its physiological and social similarities to humans, including shared susceptibilities to age-related diseases. However, the effects of healthy aging on marmoset mastication and swallowing are poorly understood, despite their importance for modeling human aging and understanding marmoset ecology and longevity (efficient food processing impacts foraging success and predation risk). Given their specialized diet, dental adaptations, and relatively long lifespan compared with other biomedical models commonly use

BACKGROUND: It has been known for long that females carrying pathogenic variants in the DMD gene often report symptoms and/or exhibit signs of the disease. However, a notable knowledge gap exists concerning the signs and symptoms of female carriers of other X-linked neuromuscular diseases (XLNMDs).
OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aims to provide a comprehensive outline of existing literature regarding the signs and symptoms of carriers of non-DMD XLNMDs to raise awareness among both researchers and clinicians.
METHODS: Three electronic databases were used for the literature search (PubMed, Em

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2Z (CMT2Z) is an inherited axonal neuropathy caused by haploinsufficiency of microrchidia CW-type zinc finger protein 2 (MORC2), which leads to elevated hydroxyl radical levels, reduced ATPase activity, and apoptosis-mediated neuromuscular degeneration. CMT2Z presents with severe clinical manifestations, yet no widely applicable and affordable treatment has been developed. While gene therapy presents a theoretical solution, its feasibility remains constrained by prohibitive costs and delivery challenges. We observed sex-specific differences in muscle function i

INTRODUCTION: The Schneiderian membrane is crucial in sinus augmentation and implant placement in the posterior maxilla. Its thickness is a key factor in treatment success, as variations may influence surgical outcomes and risk of complications. Smoking has been implicated in mucosal alterations; however, its impact on Schneiderian membrane thickness remains underexplored. This study aimed to compare Schneiderian membrane thickness between smokers and non-smokers using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed CBCT scans of 60 individuals d
