Vision transformer and deep learning based weighted ensemble model for automated spine fracture type identification with GAN generated CT images.

The most common causes of spine fractures, or vertebral column fractures (VCF), are traumas like falls, injuries from sports, or accidents. CT scans are affordable and effective at detecting VCF types in an accurate manner. VCF type identification in cervical, thoracic, and lumbar (C3-L5) regions is limited and sensitive to inter-observer variability. To solve this problem, this work introduces an autonomous approach for identifying VCF type by developing a novel ensemble model of Vision Transformers (ViT) and best-performing deep learning (DL) models. It assists orthopaedicians in easy and ea

Non-Invasive Detection of Early-Stage Fatty Liver Disease via an On-Skin Impedance Sensor and Attention-Based Deep Learning.

Early-stage nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a silent condition, with most cases going undiagnosed, potentially progressing to liver cirrhosis and cancer. A non-invasive and cost-effective detection method for early-stage NAFLD detection is a public health priority but challenging. In this study, an adhesive, soft on-skin sensor with low electrode-skin contact impedance for early-stage NAFLD detection is fabricated. A method is developed to synthesize platinum nanoparticles and reduced graphene quantum dots onto the on-skin sensor to reduce electrode-skin contact impedance by increa

MRI-only based material mass density and relative stopping power estimation via deep learning for proton therapy: a preliminary study.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is increasingly being used in treatment planning due to its superior soft tissue contrast, which is useful for tumor and soft tissue delineation compared to computed tomography (CT). However, MRI cannot directly provide mass density or relative stopping power (RSP) maps, which are required for calculating proton radiotherapy doses. Therefore, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into MRI-based treatment planning to estimate mass density and RSP directly from MRI has generated significant interest. A deep learning (DL) based framework was developed to

Improved detection of cholesterol gallstones using quasi-material decomposition images generated from single-energy computed tomography images via deep learning.

In this study, we developed a method for generating quasi-material decomposition (quasi-MD) images from single-energy computed tomography (SECT) images using a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN). Our aim was to improve the detection of cholesterol gallstones and to determine the clinical utility of quasi-MD images. Four thousand pairs of virtual monochromatic images (70 keV) and MD images (fat/water) of the same section, obtained via dual-energy computed tomography (DECT), were used to train the DCNN. The trained DCNN can automatically generate quasi-MD images from the SECT images. Addit

Automated pediatric brain tumor imaging assessment tool from CBTN: Enhancing suprasellar region inclusion and managing limited data with deep learning.

BACKGROUND: Fully automatic skull-stripping and tumor segmentation are crucial for monitoring pediatric brain tumors (PBT). Current methods, however, often lack generalizability, particularly for rare tumors in the sellar/suprasellar regions and when applied to real-world clinical data in limited data scenarios. To address these challenges, we propose AI-driven techniques for skull-stripping and tumor segmentation. METHODS: Multi-institutional, multi-parametric MRI scans from 527 pediatric patients (n = 336 for skull-stripping, n = 489 for tumor segmentation) with various PBT histologies were

A new computer-aided diagnosis tool based on deep learning methods for automatic detection of retinal disorders from OCT images.

PURPOSE: Early detection of retinal disorders using optical coherence tomography (OCT) images can prevent vision loss. Since manual screening can be time-consuming, tedious, and fallible, we present a reliable computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) software based on deep learning. Also, we made efforts to increase the interpretability of the deep learning methods, overcome their vague and black box nature, and also understand their behavior in the diagnosis. METHODS: We propose a novel method to improve the interpretability of the used deep neural network by embedding the rich semantic information of

Multimodality Risk Assessment of Patients with Ischemic Heart Disease Using Deep Learning Models Applied to Electrocardiograms and Chest X-rays.

Comprehensive management approaches for patients with ischemic heart disease (IHD) are important aids for prognostication and treatment planning. While single-modality deep neural networks (DNNs) have shown promising performance for detecting cardiac abnormalities, the potential benefits of using DNNs for multimodality risk assessment in patients with IHD have not been reported. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of multimodality risk assessment in patients with IHD using a DNN that utilizes 12-lead electrocardiograms (ECGs) and chest X-rays (CXRs), with the predict

Fast intraoperative detection of primary CNS lymphoma and differentiation from common CNS tumors using stimulated Raman histology and deep learning.

Accurate intraoperative diagnosis is crucial for differentiating between primary CNS lymphoma (PCNSL) and other CNS entities, guiding surgical decision-making, but represents significant challenges due to overlapping histomorphological features, time constraints, and differing treatment strategies. We combined stimulated Raman histology (SRH) with deep learning to address this challenge. We imaged unprocessed, label-free tissue samples intraoperatively using a portable Raman scattering microscope, generating virtual H&E-like images within less than three minutes. We developed a deep learning p
