Intraoperative Nerve Monitoring Parameters and Risk of Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve Injury in Thyroidectomy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background/Objectives: Recurrent laryngeal nerve injury (RLNI) is a major complication of thyroidectomy, affecting voice, airway protection, and quality of life. Intraoperative nerve monitoring (IONM) has been introduced to complement direct nerve visualization and reduce RLNI risk, but its efficacy remains controversial. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine RLNI prevalence with IONM, compare rates with historical no-IONM cohorts, perform head-to-head comparisons, and assess the influence of IONM characteristics. Methods: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library,

Comparative effectiveness of total laryngectomy versus organ preservation in T3 laryngeal cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The management of T3 laryngeal cancer involves balancing disease control and preserving laryngeal function. Studies show comparable survival outcomes between total laryngectomy (TL) and organ-preserving therapy (OPT), such as radiotherapy (RT) and chemoradiotherapy (CRT). However, OPT is suitable for only a subset of patients, and its protocols vary by institution. While OPT offers functional benefits, TL is associated with reduced risk of recurrence. In this review, we compare both TL and OPT in terms of locoregional control, salvage rates, and survival rates. METHODS: We searche

A randomized controlled equivalence trial of pulmonary surfactant administration via laryngeal mask airway versus endotracheal intubation.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (NRDS) is a life-threatening condition marked by progressive respiratory failure due to pulmonary surfactant (PS) deficiency, typically presenting within hours of birth. Exogenous pulmonary surfactant replacement therapy has significantly reduced mortality associated with NRDS and improved clinical outcomes. The current standard of care involves the intubation-surfactant-extubation (INSURE) technique. However, emerging evidence suggests that the laryngeal mask airway (LMA) may serve as a viable noninvasive alternative for neonatal resuscitatio

Prognostic impact of recurrent laryngeal nerve lymph node metastatic status in thoracic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is a highly aggressive malignancy with poor prognosis, and lymph node metastasis significantly influences patient outcomes. This retrospective study analyzed 189 thoracic ESCC patients who underwent radical esophagectomy (2019-2021) to evaluate the prognostic role of recurrent laryngeal nerve lymph node metastasis (RLN LNM). Patients with RLN LNM showed significantly worse overall survival (OS, P = 0.01) and disease-free survival (DFS, P = 0.046) than those without metastasis, with a 50.53% higher mortality risk and 37.83% higher recurrence risk. Awake Rigid Bronchoscopy With Ultrasound-Guided Superior Laryngeal Nerve Blocks in Severe Airway Obstruction: A Case Report.

Rigid bronchoscopy is typically performed under general anesthesia, which can be unsafe in certain patients. The alternative is awake rigid bronchoscopy, which is rarely performed. This case concerns a patient with anaplastic thyroid cancer who presented with airway obstruction and respiratory distress. The patient had an obstructed trachea due to tumor invasion and compression. After performing ultrasound-guided superior laryngeal nerve blocks and airway topicalization to block the glossopharyngeal nerve, the obstruction was bypassed via an awake rigid bronchoscopy-guided tracheostomy. Subglottic Laryngeal Salivary Gland Intraductal Papillary Mucinous Neoplasm with GNAS Mutation: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

INTRODUCTION: Salivary gland intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (SG IPMN) is a recently described entity arising predominately from intraoral minor salivary glands, characterised by a low-grade papillary cystic proliferation of mucinous columnar cells, so-named due to its resemblance to the pancreatic duct counterpart [1]. It is currently mentioned in the World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of Tumours (5th edition) salivary gland tumours introduction as a lesion with low-grade mucinous morphology that shares frequent AKT1 mutations with mucinous adenocarcinoma, hence it is thou
