OBJECTIVES: To assess vaccination status in a cohort of children with rheumatic diseases followed at the University Children's Hospital Ljubljana and to evaluate the most common reasons for vaccination dropout.
METHODS: Patients with rheumatic diseases who were evaluated at the rheumatology outpatient clinic between January 2015 and January 2017 received a questionnaire about their vaccination status and reasons for potential vaccination dropout. Vaccination coverage for individual vaccines was determined at 5, 10, 18 years and at the time of their last clinic visit.
RESULTS: Data were recei

Bone health in children with rheumatic conditions may be compromised due to several factors related to the inflammatory disease state, delayed puberty, altered life style, including decreased physical activities, sun avoidance, suboptimal calcium and vitamin D intake, and medical treatments, mainly glucocorticoids and possibly some disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs. Low bone density or even fragility fractures could be asymptomatic; therefore, children with diseases of high inflammatory load, such as systemic onset juvenile idiopathic arthritis, juvenile dermatomyositis, systemic lupus er

The present study was undertaken to assess mortality, causes of death, and associated prognostic factors in a large cohort of patients diagnosed with idiopathic inflammatory myositis (IIM) from Spain. A retrospective longitudinal study was carried out in 467 consecutive patients with IIM, identified from 12 medical centers. Patients were classified as primary polymyositis, primary dermatomyositis (DM), overlap myositis, cancer-associated myositis (CAM), and juvenile idiopathic inflammatory myopathies. A total of 113 deaths occurred (24%) after a median follow-up time of 9.7 years. In the overa

RIG-I is a key cytosolic RNA sensor that mediates innate immune defense against RNA virus. Aberrant RIG-I activity leads to severe pathological states such as autosomal dominant multi-system disorder, inflammatory myophathies and dermatomyositis. Therefore, identification of regulators that ensure efficient defense without harmful immune-pathology is particularly critical to deal with RIG-I-associated diseases. Here, we presented the inflammatory inducible FAT10 as a novel negative regulator of RIG-I-mediated inflammatory response. In various cell lines, FAT10 protein is undetectable unless it

Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is commonly encountered in patients with connective tissue diseases (CTD). Besides the lung parenchyma, the airways, pulmonary vasculature and structures of the chest wall may all be involved, depending on the type of CTD. As a result of this so-called multi-compartment involvement, airflow limitation, pulmonary hypertension, vasculitis and extrapulmonary restriction can occur alongside fibro-inflammatory parenchymal abnormalities in CTD. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic sclerosis (SSc), poly-/dermatomyositis (PM/DM), Sjögren's syndrome (SjS), systemic lupus

Incorporation of circulating hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPCs) into damaged skeletal muscle has been proposed as a novel mechanism of tissue repair complementary to satellite cell-dependent regeneration. We studied the occurrence and myoendothelial differentiation of HPCs in muscle of patients with inflammatory myopathies. Muscle biopsies from untreated patients with dermatomyositis, polymyositis, inclusion body myositis, and controls were investigated for the expression of endothelial (CD31, von Willebrand factor, vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2), hematopoietic (CD34, CD133,

Three cases of cerebral phaeohyphomycosis are described. Two cases (Cases 1, 2) are caused by highly neurotropic fungi, Cladophialophora bantiana, and the other one (Case 3) is the first reported case in the United States, caused by the newly defined Fonsecaea monophora. (Case 1): A 65-year-old woman had been treated for a presumed diagnosis of Guillain-Barré syndrome and was found to have a ring-enhancing, fluid-filled lesion in the right frontal lobe. The lesion was aspirated twice and then resected completely. (Case 2): A 45-year-old woman with a history of severe dermatomyositis presented

OBJECTIVE: We sought to assess serum cutaneous T-cell-attracting chemokine (CTACK) levels and CTACK expression levels in skin from patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc), and determine whether serum CTACK levels correlate with clinical features in SSc patients.
METHODS: Serum samples were obtained from 73 SSc patients, 32 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and 26 patients with dermatomyositis. Serum CTACK levels were determined by enzyme-linked immunoabsorbent assay. CTACK mRNA expression in sclerotic skin was assessed by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction.

Rhabdomyolysis and acute polymyositis share a similar clinical profile with elevated serum creatine kinase (CK). Unlike polymyositis, the electromyography (EMG) findings of acute rhabdomyolysis with myoglobinuria are not well defined. We retrospectively evaluated 15 patients during the acute phase of rhabdomyolysis. All patients (age range, 10-84 years) underwent electrodiagnostic studies, including needle EMG, during the first 2 weeks from the onset of symptoms. All patients presented with acute myalgia, muscle tenderness, and severe generalized weakness. The median peak CK was 48.0 k u/L (25
