INTRODUCTION: Asthma is a chronic inflammatory respiratory disease that is frequently associated with emotional distress and impaired quality of life. However, how clinical factors, such as treatment, adherence, lung function, and allergy sensitization, relate to depressive symptoms remains unclear. In this study, we examined the associations among asthma control, treatment, adherence, lung function, allergy sensitization, somatic and cognitive-affective depressive symptoms, and quality of life in a real-life clinical setting.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included adults with asthma at

Objective.Pulmonary function tests are central to assessing ventilatory impairment but are often limited by accessibility, repeatability, and patient compliance, particularly in community and longitudinal monitoring settings. This study investigates whether acoustic features of voluntary coughs can serve as low burden surrogate signals reflecting trends in spirometry related indices of ventilatory impairment.Approach.We propose a dual output ensemble learning framework that integrates deterministic regression and probabilistic interval estimation to jointly model spirometry related parameters

BACKGROUND: Glucose metabolism disorders (GMDs) are established risk factors for severe COVID-19, but increasing evidence indicates that they may also develop de novo after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Neutrophil extracellular trap formation (NETosis) plays a central role in immunothrombosis, and because neutrophils rely predominantly on glycolysis, they are particularly sensitive to systemic metabolic disturbances. However, the impact of post-COVID-19 GMDs on NETosis remains poorly understood. This study aimed to characterize the emergence of GMDs after COVID-19 and to determine their effect on neut

BACKGROUND: Progressive fibrosing interstitial lung disease is characterized by continuous functional decline and early mortality despite conventional immunosuppressive therapy. The dual pathophysiology involves both inflam-mation and fibrosis and provides rationale for combination antifibrotic and immunosuppressive therapy.
OBJECTIVES: To review and synthesize current clinical evidence on the efficacy, safety, and clinical positioning of combination antifibrotic and immunosuppressive therapy in progressive fibrosing interstitial lung disease.
METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive literature

BACKGROUND: The high prevalence of COPD in sub-Saharan Africa is poorly understood. In high-income countries, COPD is the consequence of suboptimal lung growth during childhood and/or accelerated lung function decline in adult life. We have conducted cross-sectional studies to measure the lung function of children and adults in Kenya and to identify associations with age.
METHODS: We performed spirometry in three groups in Kenya: a random sample of schoolchildren in two districts of urban Nairobi and age/sex-stratified representative community samples of adults in Nairobi and rural Machakos.

BACKGROUND: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is treated with intermittent or daily corticosteroid (CS) regimens. Risk-benefit assessment is essential to optimise treatment choice, but long-term efficacy and side effects accumulate beyond clinical trial duration. We describe long-term effects of intermittent compared with daily regimens using real-world data.
METHODS: We compared retrospective data from individuals with DMD treated daily with deflazacort versus intermittently (10 days on/off) with prednisone or deflazacort at three neuromuscular centres in Belgium and the Netherlands between

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a common complication of interstitial lung disease (ILD), yet data on screening in heterogenous ILD populations are limited. We evaluated whether routinely measured pulmonary function test (PFT) parameters identify individuals with intermediate-to-high echocardiographic risk of PH. 432 ILD patients met inclusion criteria with an echocardiogram reporting peak tricuspid regurgitant velocity (TRV) and a PFT reporting diffusion impairment (DLCO) within 1 year (median interval, 39 days). Of these, 126 underwent right heart catheterization (RHC). Age- and sex- adjusted

UNLABELLED: Late-onset Pompe disease (LOPD) is a progressive myopathy. Enzyme replacement therapy is effective, but long-term outcomes vary. Avalglucosidase alfa, shown to be non-inferior to alglucosidase alfa in a phase 3 trial, became available in France through compassionate use for patients with insufficient response to alglucosidase alfa.
METHODS: Data from the French Pompe registry were analyzed for patients who switched to avalglucosidase alfa with at least 1 year of follow-up. Respiratory function (forced vital capacity, FVC) and motor function evaluated with gait performance (Six-Min

BACKGROUND: Nontuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM-PD) is a chronic, often progressive, respiratory infection with an increasing global incidence that is frequently accompanied by bronchiectasis. Although antimicrobial therapy is the cornerstone of treatment, culture conversion is often incomplete, and structural lung disease persists; therefore, pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) and airway clearance techniques (ACTs) have been advocated as adjuncts. However, prospective cohort evidence of these measures in patients with NTM-PD is lacking.
METHODS: NTM-Rehab is a single-center, prosp

BACKGROUND: Relapsing-remitting Multiple Sclerosis (RRMS) is characterized by inflammatory attacks on myelin. Previous studies have shown the vital role of coagulation factors, inflammation, and oxidative stress in multiple sclerosis (MS). Hence, changes in these factors in relapse occurrence could propose novel therapeutic and diagnostic targets. The blood samples were collected during relapse status. Then, patients were followed up for three months with no difference in disease modifying treatments (DMTs)-naive status, and the second blood samples were collected in the remission phase.

Ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury is a major cause of multiple organ failure. The purpose of this study was to look into the role of Tephrosia purpurea (TEP) and its active constituent pseudosemiglabrin (PS) in alleviating severe acute pancreatitis and its associated acute lung injury. We established a rat pancreatic IR model, and the rats were treated with TEP (200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg) and PS (20 and 40 mg/kg), in addition to the IR control and sham groups. The results showed that the respiratory parameters, including inspiratory time (Ti), expiratory time (Te), duration (Dr), and respiratory

OBJECTIVE: We examined whether riluzole treatment modifies the associations between the dietary glycemic index (GI) and load (GL) and disease progression in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
METHODS: Sporadic ALS patients in the Multicenter Cohort Study of Oxidative Stress who completed a baseline food frequency questionnaire were included (n = 304). Interactions between baseline riluzole treatment and GI/GL on functional decline and tracheostomy-free survival were examined using linear regression and Cox proportional hazard models adjusted for covariates. STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is often more severe in edentulous individuals because of reduced pharyngeal support, which may increase airway collapsibility. Although complete dentures restore the vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO) and oral function, they may also influence upper airway morphology. The impact of removable complete dentures on respiratory function in OSA remains unclear.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this clinical study was to assess the effect of bimaxillary removable complete dentures on respiratory function and upper airway morphology in patients with OSA

Pompe disease (PD) is a rare, autosomal recessive neuromuscular disorder caused by a deficiency in acid α-glucosidase. In the Phase 3 COMET trial (NCT02782741), respiratory function was examined in participants with late-onset PD randomized to receive enzyme replacement therapy with alglucosidase alfa (ALG; standard of care) or avalglucosidase alfa (AVA; intervention) in the primary analysis period (PAP). The open-label extended treatment period (ETP) provided long-term data on AVA treatment. This post hoc analysis evaluated respiratory outcomes in participants who received ALG in the PAP (Wee
