Comparison of two treatments for dry eye disease after corneal refractive surgery.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

There are no international or Chinese guidelines for the management of dry eye disease that develops after corneal refractive surgery. Sodium hyaluronate is the first-line therapy for dry eye diseases but is not sufficient to treat severe conditions. This study aimed to compare three-month outcomes following treatment of dry eyes after corneal refractive surgery with 3% diquafosol against those with 0.1% sodium hyaluronate. In a retrospective study, 118 patients were treated with 3% diquafosol sodium six times/day (DQS cohort, n=118 eyes) and 184 patients were treated with 0.1% sodium hyaluron

Implications of nanotechnology for the treatment of Dry Eye Disease: Recent advances.

Managing Dry Eye Disease (DED), a prevalent condition affecting the ocular surface, remains challenging despite advancements in diagnostics and therapies. Current treatments primarily involve lubricating eye drops and anti-inflammatory medications, which often require prolonged use and generally provide only symptomatic relief. The current study focuses on improving DED treatments through nano-drug delivery technologies and advanced formulations. These systems aim to address the limitations of conventional therapies by providing extended, targeted, and sustained drug release. The development o

Adverse eye effects of smoke exposure at prescribed burns in wildland firefighters.

OBJECTIVE: Despite exposure to high concentrations of particulate matter (PM) and gases on the fire ground, little is known about the impact of wildfire smoke on the eye surface of wildland firefighters. This field study investigated the impact of smoke exposure at prescribed burns on the eye surface of Australian wildland firefighters. METHODS: Twenty-three firefighters (19-60 years, 78% male) were evaluated before and after four prescribed burns for eye symptoms and clinical signs of eye surface damage. Types of protective eyewear used were recorded and a subset of firefighters wore PM2.5 p

Effect of anticholinergic eye drops on intraorbital, periorbital and brain pulsation power.

PURPOSE: The study aims to investigate the effect of pharmacologically reducing parasympathetic activity on ocular and cerebral pulsations, inspired by recent discoveries of a glymphatic-like system in the eye driven by physiological pulsations. METHODS: Forty-six healthy volunteers were subjected to fMREye imaging, with 23 receiving topical tropicamide and 23 serving as controls. Additionally, 83 healthy volunteers were scanned using 3D whole-brain magnetic resonance encephalography (MREG). Ocular pulsation power across very low-frequency, respiratory and cardiac bands was quantified in each

The Tubulointerstitium in Health and Disease: More Than What Meets the Eye.

The tubulointerstitium is a critical component of the nephron. It is a highly vascularized compartment that plays an important part in kidney health and function. The tubulointerstitium orchestrates the clinical effects of volume control, electrolyte and acid-base balance, medication and toxin secretion, hormone production, immunological and inflammatory processes, and tubular repair processes. These important interconnected processes within the tubulointerstitial compartment that are independent of glomerular filtration require an intact tubulointerstitium to achieve optimal kidney function.

Clinical and genetic profiling of fibromyalgia-associated dry eye: A multifactorial approach.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FM) is a chronic pain disorder affecting 3-6 % of the global population, often underdiagnosed and lacking specific diagnostic tests. Many patients also present with dry eye disease (DED), suggesting a possible link. This study explores the relationship between DED and FM-associated DED (FM-DED) by evaluating corneal nerve abnormalities using in vivo corneal confocal microscopy (IVCM), alongside gene expression and polymorphisms (COMT, MTHFR) related to inflammation. METHODS: The study included 113 participants: 81 patients (44 with DED, 37 with FM-DED) and 3

Improved Immunohistochemistry of Mouse Eye Sections Using Davidson's Fixative and Melanin Bleaching.

Immunohistochemistry (IHC) and immunofluorescence (IF) are fundamental molecular biology techniques to assess protein expression. However, the melanin present normally in the eye in the uveal tract (choroid, iris, and ciliary body) and the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) poses a significant challenge for IHC and IF. This is because melanin interferes with both chromogenic and fluorescent detection methods. Additionally, formalin fixation, which is commonly used for IHC, can result in shrinkage and loss of cellular detail in the eye. This protocol provides an optimized approach using Davidson'

The Management of Thyroid Eye Disease: From Current Practice to Future Perspectives.

Thyroid eye disease (TED) is a complex autoimmune disease, which can have debilitating and possibly sight-threatening consequences. TED can present with diplopia, strabismus, pain and exophthalmos. Despite pathophysiology not being fully elucidated, key components of the TED pathogenesis pathway have been established. Current management focuses on reducing inflammation in the active phase of TED and subsequently employs surgical interventions to rectify the clinical sequelae that arise post-inflammation. However, given the side effect profiles and varying efficacy of current treatment options,

Advances in eye-brain axis: Anatomy, immunity, and association with visual dysfunction.

The "eye-brain axis" refers to the dynamic system of interactions between the eyes and the brain, collectively encompassing the visual signal transmission and integration pathways. The eyes and the brain exhibit structural and functional synergy, and visual dysfunction not only impairs information processing within the eye but also induces structural and functional remodeling of the central nervous system (CNS) via the eye-brain axis. For instance, the effects of glaucoma on the visual cortex are manifested as reduced blood perfusion and decreased efficiency of mitochondrial adenosine triphosp
