Orthostatic hypotension and incident heart failure in community-dwelling older adults.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the association of orthostatic hypotension with incident heart failure (HF) in older adults. METHODS: Of the 5,273 community-dwelling adults aged 65 years and older free of baseline prevalent HF in the Cardiovascular Health Study, 937 (18%) had orthostatic hypotension, defined as ≥20 mmHg drop in systolic or ≥10 mmHg drop in diastolic blood pressure from supine to standing position at 3 minutes. Of the 937, 184 (20%) had symptoms of dizziness upon standing and were considered to have symptomatic orthostatic hypotension. Propensity scores for orthostatic hypotension were

Faith, Food, and Health: Samoan Churches as Missed Health Communication Resources in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) disproportionately affect Samoan communities in the Pacific Islands and United States, and food literacy is an important determinant of dietary behavior. Churches are central Samoan cultural institutions, yet their role in U.S. diaspora health practices remains underexamined. This study examines churches as nutrition and health information sources among the Samoan diaspora in the San Francisco Bay Area, one of the largest Pacific Islander populations in the United States. Data derive from surveys of 147 Samoan adults and five semi-structured interviews conducte

The role of friendship maintenance over communication technologies in freshmen's social adjustment to college.

Objective: Studies show that friendships help undergraduates navigate the transition to college, but it is unclear how technology use impacts the maintenance of friendships and students' subsequent adjustment. This study fills this gap by examining how maintenance over communication technologies with pre-college and in-college friends is associated with freshmen's social adjustment to college, via two psychological processes: social support and belongingness. Participants and Methods: 194 college freshmen completed online surveys. Results: Path analyses show that maintaining friendships with p

Person-Centred Plans From the Perspective of Persons-Supported in a Community Care Setting: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: In partnership with PHSS, a community care agency in London, Ontario, we describe the person-centred planning model. Person-centred plans (PCPs) are mandated in the community care sector and created annually through discussions with the person-supported, staff, family/friends and community members. PCPs are individualised, integrated into daily activities and contribute towards larger goals. METHODS: We interviewed 18 persons-supported and one family member. Participants were individuals with developmental, medical, or complex physical needs and supported by PHSS. We explored goal

"I Wasn't Heard at All": Black patients' perspectives on communication in surgery.

BACKGROUND: Black patients in the United States face persistent disparities in surgical care, influenced by structural barriers and differences in communication. In conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), where multiple treatment pathways exist, provider communication plays a critical role in building trust and shaping treatment decisions. This study explores Black patients' perceptions of patient-provider communication using CTS as a model. METHODS: We conducted 28 in-depth interviews using interpretive description to examine the experiences of Black patients receiving surgical care at

Body Mass Index as a Determinant of Lower Limb Function and Community Well-Being in Older Adults: Analysis of 2020 National Older Korean Survey Data.

This epidemiological research investigated the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and lower limb function and community well-being among the older population (≥65 years old) in South Korea. Using the 2020 National Survey of Older Koreans (N = 10 097; Mage = 73.6 ± 6.63; MBMI = 23.6 ± 2.61), the study identified underweight (2.3%), normal (72.8%), and obese (24.9%) groups. Findings revealed significant associations between BMI and lower limb function, with underweight individuals facing greater physical challenges (P < .05-.01). Underweight participants were also found to live farther f

Cocreating composite digital stories to share research findings with minority ethnic and disadvantaged communities: a reflective guide.

BACKGROUND: Researchers have an ethical responsibility to share their findings with their studies' participants and those who can influence policy and practice. Storytelling is an arts-based approach increasingly used in nursing research to share findings, but little has been written about how to use the approach in participatory research involving people from minority ethnic and socioeconomically disadvantaged communities. AIM: To present a guide to cocreating digital stories to share research findings with minority ethnic and socioeconomically disadvantaged communities. DISCUSSION: The aut

Examining Long-Term Mental Health in a Rural Community Post-Disaster: A Mixed Methods Approach.

Psychological stressors have been observed immediately following disasters, yet less is known about the long-term effects on the mental health of vulnerable communities. In 2005, Graniteville, S.C. was ravaged by a train derailment that leaked approximately 60 tons of chlorine gas and left several people dead in the small community. The purpose of this study was to examine the mental health of Graniteville-area residents in the nine years following the train disaster using a mixed methods approach. Using the photovoice method, participants reported compromised mental health with symptoms consi

Infant twins' social interactions with caregivers and same-age siblings.

The study of twin behavior offers the opportunity to study differential patterns of social and communicative interactions in a context where the adult partner and same-age peer are equally familiar. We investigated the development of social engagement, communicative gestures, and imitation in 7- to 25-month-old twins. Twin dyads (N=20 pairs) participated in 10-min, semi-structured play sessions, with the mother seated in a chair completing paperwork for half the session, and on the floor with her children for the other half. Overall, twins engaged more with their mothers than with their siblin

Community reentry: perceptions of people with substance use problems returning home from New York City jails.

Each year about 100,000 people return to New York City communities from municipal jails. Although about four-fifths report drug or alcohol problems, few have received any formal drug treatment while in jail. Researchers and practitioners have identified a number of policies related to corrections, income, housing, and drug treatment that may be harmful to the successful reintegration of people leaving jail. In order to explore the challenges to successful community reentry, six focus groups and one in-depth interview were conducted with 37 men and women who had been released from jail or priso

Assessment of villagers' perceptions towards nutrition communication in rural Nepal.

This article examines the perceptions of villagers of Nepal towards effective modes of nutrition communication affecting their nutritional health. Based on the villagers' experience of the nutrition communication used in various vitamin A projects surveyed in three districts of Nepal, a majority of the villagers strongly believe that a nutrition project cannot be effective in achieving its goals unless the local villagers are consulted during the process (defined to include design, development, implementation, and evaluation). They also believed that, among other modes of communication, a grou

Skin cancer prevention and detection practices in a Michigan farm population following an educational intervention.

Farmers face an increased risk of skin cancer, presumed to be secondary to their increased occupational exposure to sunlight. This study examines skin cancer prevention and detection beliefs and practices among adult farmers in defined control and comparison farming communities in four contiguous counties of Michigan, before and after a community-based educational intervention. The educational intervention included mailing packets containing information on skin cancer risks and community sources for screening, disseminating articles in local newspapers on skin cancer prevention and control mea

Validity of gold-standard clinical outcome assessments in U.S. Latinx-Hispanic participants enrolled in Alzheimer's disease clinical trials: A literature review.

There is an urgency to achieve equitable representation of Latinx-Hispanic participants in Alzheimer's disease (AD) clinical trials. Valid instruments for these communities contribute to the generalizability of clinical trial outcomes. The aim of this study was to review articles reporting studies that conducted a thorough assessment of the validity and reliability of three gold-standard cognitive measures with U.S. Latinx-Hispanic communities. We reviewed validity/reliability studies of the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR), Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-Cognition (ADAS-Cog), and Repeatab

Stakeholders' perspectives on communicating biosecurity to encourage behavior change in farmers.

Effective communication is crucial for strengthening collaboration and ensuring the successful implementation of biosecurity measures against infectious diseases. A collaborative approach, where farmers and veterinarians play a central role in decision-making, may have a greater impact on promoting the implementation of biosecurity practices compared to a top-down approach. The objective of this study was to explore the perspectives of researchers, official services, and industry on the preferred communication methods between farmers and various on-farm stakeholders. Data were collected throug

Connecting communities across the globe: Atlas protocol.

BACKGROUND: Providing universal access to palliative care is increasingly recognised as a global public health priority, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Compassionate communities could help with provision by fostering community-led responses to dying, death and grief. Despite their global growth, compassionate communities are often absent from national and international palliative care strategies, and few are represented in academic literature. This, along with their diversity and community-defined nature, can contribute to difficulties in documentation, evaluation and visibili
