A selenomethionine deficient, high-fructose diet does not lead to cardiometabolic disorder in the selenocysteine lyase knockout mice.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: High-fructose consumption is a driver of cardiometabolic disorders and metabolic syndrome, and selenium (Se) deficiency further increases the risk of developing these diseases. Consuming high amounts of fructose induces insulin resistance and oxidative stress, and alters the cardiac lipidome. Se may reduce the detrimental impacts of fructose through its incorporation into selenoproteins like the glutathione peroxidases 1 and 4, (GPX1,4) and the thioredoxin reductase 1 (TXNRD1) whose primary function is to curb oxidative stress. When Se levels are limited, selenocysteine lya

Foliar application of nitrates limits lead uptake by Cucumis sativus L. plants.

Lead is a toxic heavy metal, which accumulates in the soil and is readily absorbed by plant roots. The uptake of toxic elements by crops is a serious threat to human health. For this reason, it is important to prevent the incorporation of heavy metals into the food chain. Our previous study showed that foliar application of calcium nitrate reduces the intensity of lead uptake by different plant species. A significant decrease in metal concentration was observed both in the roots and in the shoots of three crops: tomato, cucumber, and flax. The present research investigated the mechanism for li

Esculin mitigates nickel chloride-induced generation of ROS, hemoglobin oxidation, and alterations in redox status in human red blood cells.

BACKGROUND: Nickel (Ni) is a heavy metal and an environmental pollutant that is harmful to humans because of its carcinogenicity and toxic effects on several tissues and organs. Due to their widespread use concerns have been raised about the potential adverse effects of Ni and its compounds on human health. Ni compounds induce oxidative stress in cells by modifying the redox equilibrium. This work studied the protective role of the plant antioxidant esculin (ES) against nickel chloride (NiCl2)-induced oxidative damage and cytotoxicity in isolated human red blood cells (RBC). METHODS: Human RB

Optimizing the anticancer action and toxicity evaluation of cobalt ferrite nanoparticles by different polyethylene glycol concentrations.

BACKGROUND: Polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a coating agent enhances the circulation time of nanoparticles (NPs) and shields the inorganic core from the immediate cell-mediated immune response. Cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) has shown promising potential due to its magnetic properties and is also widely used to stimulate targeted responsive drug deposition mechanisms to treat localized cancerous cells. METHODOLOGY: In this study, the anticancer potential of CoFe2O4 NPs was optimized by coating the NPs with different PEG concentrations. The synthesized CoFe2O4 NPs have a crystallite size of 15.7 nm, de

Iron regulates lipid droplet formation in hepatocytes via heme oxygenase-1 mediated ferroptosis.

BACKGROUND: Iron overload has been implicated in the disruption of hepatic lipid metabolism, potentially contributing to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and other hepatic disorders. However, the underlying mechanisms connecting iron overload to lipid metabolism dysregulation remain elusive. This study aimed to investigate the effect of iron overload on lipid droplet formation, and to explore the regulatory mechanism of iron overload on lipid metabolism through the lens of ferroptosis. METHODS: Iron overload and ferroptosis models were established by treating AML12 mouse hepatocytes with fer

The emerging potential of gallium compounds in medical research: A promising frontier.

Gallium-based compounds have become increasingly important in medicine due to their remarkable antimicrobial, anti-cancer, and anti-inflammatory properties. In terms of antimicrobial activity, these compounds inhibit the growth of microorganisms by interfering with their essential iron-dependent processes. Gallium competes with iron for binding sites in microbial cells, leading to iron deficiency and subsequent inhibition of microbial growth and replication. In addition, gallium-based compounds have been shown to inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells and induce programmed cell death in var

Effect of blueberries on non-heme iron absorption in adult women.

Iron deficiency, the leading cause of anemia, can be exacerbated by dietary inhibitors such as polyphenols in fruits and vegetables. Despite their high polyphenol content, blueberries contain antioxidant compounds such as ascorbic acid and carotenoids, which are known to enhance iron absorption. This study aims to assess the net effect of blueberry consumption on non-heme iron absorption in healthy, non-menopausal women. Fourteen women aged 38-50 years, with contraception and a negative pregnancy test, participated in the study. After overnight fasting, the subjects were administered iron with
