Effects of energy drinks on repeated sprint performance and cognitive function in athletes.

OBJECTIVE: Energy drinks are often used by athletes before competitions to enhance their performance. Resent research has pointed out that the performance effects of select ingredients have been studied in-dividually, but not in combination with caffeine. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of caffeine, anserine and elderberry on cognitive function and repeated sprint performance of athletes during a high-intensity exercise protocol. METHODS: We employed a double-blind, randomized, counter balanced, and crossover design. Three types of supplements were tested: placebo, caffeine (220

What shall we do with the drunken sailor? Effects of alcohol on the performance of ship operators.

The purpose of this study was to specify the effects of alcohol on the performance of ship operators as a contribution to the development of new strategies against the risks of alcohol in water traffic. The nautical performance of 21 captains before and after alcohol consumption was assessed on a ship piloting simulator. The simulated scenarios represented passages of a container vessel through the German Bight. Performance was examined by nautical instructors according to standardised protocols. Mean (S.D.) blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) of 0.100 (0.024) g/dl before and 0.100 (0.017) g/d

The effects of nature-based vs. indoor settings on the adaptability, performance and affect of calisthenics exercisers. A registered report.

Comparisons of the beneficial effects of nature-based versus indoor physical activity have been extensively reported, but existing research addresses mainly aerobic activity (running, jogging), not resistance or mixed (aerobic and resistance) exercise. It is unclear if the psychological benefits extend to functionality, i.e., if participants perform their activities better in nature, and how movement is expressed in nature-based and indoor environments, during similar exercise. The present registered report was a randomized controlled trial investigating how engaging in similar resistance-base

Machine learning for predicting neurodegenerative diseases in the general older population: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: In the older general population, neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) are associated with increased disability, decreased physical and cognitive function. Detecting risk factors can help implement prevention measures. Using deep neural networks (DNNs), a machine-learning algorithm could be an alternative to Cox regression in tabular datasets with many predictive features. We aimed to compare the performance of different types of DNNs with regularized Cox proportional hazards models to predict NDs in the older general population. METHODS: We performed a longitudinal analysis with parti

Understanding the gut microbiota and sarcopenia: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Gut microbiota dysbiosis and sarcopenia commonly occur in the elderly. Although the concept of the gut-muscle axis has been raised, the casual relationship is still unclear. This systematic review analyses the current evidence of gut microbiota effects on muscle/sarcopenia. METHODS: A systematic review was performed in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and The Cochrane Library databases using the keywords (microbiota* OR microbiome*) AND (sarcopen* OR muscle). Studies reporting the alterations of gut microbiota and muscle/physical performance were analysed. RESULTS: A total of 26 p

Exploring cross-category relationships between symptoms in people with hypermobile EDS (hEDS) to identify disability patterns.

BACKGROUND: Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) is a connective tissue disorder with variable symptom presentation across multiple organ systems and significant morbidity. Little is known about hEDS etiology and identifying patterns of symptom co-occurrence can reveal previously unidentified relationships between phenotypes and inform studies of underlying disease pathophysiology for symptoms that may share functional biological pathways. In this exploratory analysis, we specifically assessed the distribution of symptoms in case and controls to identify clusters of co-occurring symptoms.

Predictors of time to achieve clinically significant improvements following lateral lumbar interbody fusion.

BACKGROUND: As lateral lumbar interbody fusions (LLIF) are increasingly performed, our understanding of postoperative clinical trajectories is important in informing preoperative patient expectations. While minimum clinically important difference (MCID) rates are widely utilized in spine surgery literature, there is less published on how long it takes for patients to achieve MCID following LLIF. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the length of time it takes for patients to report MCID achievement for back pain, leg pain, disability, and physical function and evaluate predictors of time to achieve MCID.

Contact ratio and adaptations in the maxillary and mandibular dentoalveolar joints in rats and human clinical analogs.

Spatial maps of function-based contact areas and resulting mechanical strains in bones of intact fibrous joints in preclinical small-scale animal models are limited. Functional imaging in situ on intact dentoalveolar fibrous joints (DAJs) in hemimandibles and hemimaxillae harvested from 10 male Sprague-Dawley rats (N = 5 at 12 weeks, N = 5 at 20 weeks) was performed in this study. Physical features including bone volume fraction (BVF), bone pore diameter and pore density, and cementum fraction (CF) of the molars in the maxillary and mandibular joints were evaluated. Integrated gene expression and alternative splicing analysis in human and mouse models of Rett syndrome.

Mutations of the MECP2 gene lead to Rett syndrome (RTT), a rare developmental disease causing severe intellectual and physical disability. How the loss or defective function of MeCP2 mediates RTT is still poorly understood. MeCP2 is a global gene expression regulator, acting at transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels. Little attention has been given so far to the contribution of alternative splicing (AS) dysregulation to RTT pathophysiology. To perform a comparative analysis of publicly available RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) studies and generate novel data resources for AS, we explored 100

Non-Invasive Spinal Cord Stimulation for Motor Rehabilitation of Patients with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Treated with Orphan Drugs.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an orphan disease characterized by the progressive degeneration of spinal alpha motor neurons. In recent years, nusinersen and several other drugs have been approved for the treatment of this disease. Transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS) modulates spinal neuronal networks, resulting in changes in locomotion and posture in patients with severe spinal cord injury and stroke. We hypothesize that tSCS can activate motor neurons that are intact and restored by medication, slow the decline in motor activity, and contribute to the development of motor skills

Consultation-Liaison psychiatric service delivery: results from a European study.

The reported findings of the European Consultation-Liaison Workgroup (ECLW) Collaborative Study describe consultation-liaison service delivery by 56 services from 11 European countries aggregated on a C-L service level. During the period of 1 year (1991), the participants applied a standardized, reliability tested method of patient data collection, and data were collected describing pertinent characteristics of the hospital, the C-L service, and the participating consultants. The consultation rate of 1% (median; 1.4% mean) underscores the discrepancy between epidemiology and the services deliv

Biological response to noise and other physical stressors in places of entertainment.

The present study was designed in order to evaluate if the stressors produced in discotheques, and in particular high levels of noise, may lead to the impairment of some psychophysiological functions. The survey was carried out on 34 students who were exposed to noise in a discotheque (with levels ranging from 90 to 103 dBA) and to other environmental stressors (vibrations, psychedelic lights) for a period of five hours. The same subjects were examined on another day in the absence of relevant acoustical and visual stimulations. Biochemical (urinary catecholamines and cortisol) and cardiovascu
