Ivermectin is the most used antiparasitic drug in veterinary medicine. It is excreted in faeces and may persist in the environment, potentially causing adverse toxic effects on non-target organisms. The purpose of this study is to investigate the degradation of ivermectin in barn ground after subcutaneous administration in beef cattle. To conduct this study, faecal samples were collected from various areas of the cattle barn ground where the animals had received a subcutaneous ivermectin at a dosage of 0.2 mg/kg. The samples were taken over a period of two months. The study demonstrated that t

Reptiles are increasingly popular as exotic pets and can suffer high mortality risks in captivity, yet research into their welfare remains limited. Commonly occurring practices such as frequent handling, changes in housing and diet could induce stress and increase parasite loads with potentially severe negative welfare outcomes. Therefore, it is crucial to understand how routine procedures may influence parasite infections. In this study, we exposed captive bred tokay geckos (Gekko gecko) to two stressors common in the reptile trade, cohabitation with a novel conspecific and a change in diet.

Obesity is a complex metabolic disorder increasingly linked to alterations in the gut microbiome. While most research has focused on bacterial communities, the contribution of nonbacterial components including viruses, archaea, and eukaryotic microorganisms remains insufficiently characterized. Here, we performed a multicohort analysis to investigate the role of the nonbacterial gut microbiome in obesity across three independent human cohorts. Using compositional analyses adjusted for key covariates and network based approaches, we identified consistent multikingdom alterations associated with

With a global annual production of 6 million tons, tobacco leaves contain pectin as their most abundant polysaccharide. However, the structure and prebiotic-like potential of tobacco leaf pectin remain poorly understood. In this study, crude pectin named TLPA was extracted from tobacco leaves with ammonium oxalate, and further fractionated to obtain the major fraction TLPA-1. Multi-technique structural characterization demonstrated that TLPA-1 is a pectin-rich heteropolysaccharide containing predominant homogalacturonan (HG)-like and rhamnogalacturonan-I (RG-I)-like structural features, togeth

This study aimed to determine whether piribedil therapy alters the gut microbiota of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), providing a theoretical reference for understanding gut microbiota alterations induced by piribedil and their potential clinical implications. Fecal samples were analyzed using 16S ribosomal RNA (16S rRNA) gene sequencing. Comparisons were made between patients with PD who took piribedil (piribedil group), patients with PD who did not take piribedil (PD group), and healthy controls (blank group). Compared with the blank group, the relative abundance of Staphylococcus, Rh

Agricultural headwater catchments are critical sources of microbial contamination to surface waters, yet the effectiveness of mitigation practices in these small, dynamic systems is not well defined. A paired-catchment experimental design was used to assess the effects of permanent fencing of critical source areas (CSAs) in ephemeral streams within deer-grazed pastures. Faecal, soil, and freshwater samples were collected over four years, comprising two years of baseline monitoring and two years following mitigation. Viable Escherichia coli concentrations were measured in faeces, soil and water

Background/Objectives: Accurate assessment of nutritional adequacy requires insight not only into energy intake but also into the proportion of nutrients absorbed. Stool bomb calorimetry quantifies fecal energy content and estimates intestinal energy absorption, but its application and reporting vary. We aimed to evaluate its application in adult patient populations and to quantify intestinal energy absorption and its variability. Methods: PubMed, Embase, ClinicalTrials.gov, BASE and NDLTD were searched without date restriction (PROSPERO CRD420261389214). Two reviewers screened independently,

Gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infections of ruminant livestock have traditionally been controlled through regular, "suppressive", treatment with anthelmintic drugs, but this has resulted in the evolution of anthelmintic resistance and reduced efficacy. There is now a critical need to reduce anthelmintic use to maintain anthelmintic efficacy by creating refugia where susceptible GIN reside. Targeted selective treatment (TST) strategies only treat animals that need it, ensuring animals affected by GIN maintain their performance, while animals unaffected by GIN are not treated unnecessarily. This article presented the diagnosis and treatment of three patients from the first imported familial clustering of clonorchiasis in Shanghai Municipality, and evaluated the value of different stool examination methods in non-endemic areas of clonorchiasis. In February 2026, the first case of clonorchiasis in this family was confirmed, and subsequent epidemiological surveys revealed that four family members all had a history of traveling to Guangdong Province and consuming raw freshwater fish. Stool samples were collected from all four individuals and detected for Clonorchis sinensis eggs usin

There is a growing interest in keeping exotic pets such as pythons in Australia. Reptiles are known asymptomatic carriers of Salmonella in their digestive tract. This study investigated the microbiome and carriage of Salmonella in faeces from captive Australian pythons (n = 28). This study also aimed to determine the effect of temperature and nutrient availability on monospecies biofilm formation of python-associated Salmonella isolated in this study (n = 10) as a possible indicator of persistence. A total of 23 Salmonella strains were identified from 28 captive Australian pythons, representin

Cryptosporidium genotyping has made significant contributions to the species structure and population genetics of Cryptosporidium spp. In addition, the standardized method has shown utility in epidemiologic investigations identifying case linkages and contamination sources that could not be determined with traditional epidemiologic tools. The standardized method for Cryptosporidium genotyping from stool specimens described here comprises multiple individual protocols to amplify and sequence regions of the small subunit ribosomal ribonucleic acid (SSU rRNA) and gp60 genes of Cryptosporidium.

As part of the edible dormouse (Glis glis Linnaeus, 1766) monitoring program, faecal samples of seven animals from Montes do Invernadeiro Natural Park (Galicia, NW Spain) were collected following current guidelines for the ethical use of animals in research. Fresh faecal samples were individually processed using a diphasic concentration method and nucleic acids were extracted. PCR protocols were applied to amplify a fragment of the small-subunit ribosomal RNA (ssu-rRNA) gene of Eimeria as well as fragments of ssu-rRNA and 60-kDa glycoprotein (gp60) loci of Cryptosporidium spp. The hypertransmi

The present study documents significant alterations in human gut microbial composition in arsenic exposed populations of West Bengal, India through amplicon sequencing of human stool metagenomic DNA. A notable reduction in α-diversity underscored a reduced species richness and an altered predominance. β- diversity analysis revealed prominent inter-individual differences. Among the 26 phyla detected, significant perturbation was noted in Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, and Firmicutes. Species analysis identified significant increase in Bifidobacterium adolescentis, B.longum, Blau

Contaminant sequences of external origin complicate the study of host-associated viromes, particularly in low-biomass samples obtained through viral-like particle (VLP) enrichment. However, the prevalence and impact of external contaminants on low-biomass samples are under-studied. Here, we analyze 1321 gut virome samples and 55 negative controls (NCs) from four early-life virome studies. Virus sequences identified in NCs, termed negativeome, were used as a proxy for the contamination assessment. We show that 61% of samples share at least one identical strain with negativeome, likely represent

The gut microbiome plays a vital role in physiological functions including metabolism, immune regulation, and gut-brain communication. Alterations in gut microbe makeup and function, termed microbial dysbiosis, are associated with various metabolic, inflammatory, and neurological disorders. Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) patients often display gut microbial dysbiosis and increased intestinal barrier permeability ("leaky gut"). This "leaky gut" allows for microbial products and toxins, such as lipopolysaccharides (LPS), to enter the bloodstream, triggering systemic

The isolated and characterized gut phages remain rare. Most of the gut phages that have been isolated and propagated thus far are lytic phages, leaving significant gaps in the study of gut temperate phages. In this study, we successfully isolated a large-scale collection of gut bacteria and phages, containing 1,679 bacterial strains from 86 species and 79 phages that infect bacteria from 26 different species. Among the phage isolates, 32 are temperate phages and two of these temperate phages were directly isolated from faecal samples of healthy human donors. Sequence comparisons and analysis s

BACKGROUND: The proximity between people and their domestic animals with wild animal populations can result in the spread of diseases with a significant impact on public health. Infection by parasites in wildlife is considered an important bioindicator of the current state of ecosystems, and studying the epidemiology of these infections is essential for a better understanding of natural foci. However, research on parasites in southern Brazil, especially in Rio Grande do Sul (RS), is considered incipient. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to identify the parasitic fauna of wild animals in the

INTRODUCTION: The gut microbiome is a complex ecosystem stratified that varies along different sections of the gut. It comprises a wide array of metabolites originating from both food, host, and microbes. Microbially-derived metabolites, such as bile acids, short-chain fatty acids, and indole derivatives, are of significant interest due to their direct interactions with host physiology and regulating function. Most current studies on the gut microbiome focus on fecal samples, which do not fully represent the upper parts of the gut due to its stratification. To collect microbiome samples from t

Acanthocephala are known as thorny-headed worms and are common parasites in animals, but acanthocephaliasis in humans is rare, with limited medical literature available. Infections are acquired via direct ingestion of arthropod intermediate hosts. In this case report, a female toddler is evaluated for passage of a pseudosegmented worm in the stool, which was later identified as Moniliformis moniliformis She is treated with pyrantel pamoate with a resolution of worms in stool. This case report aims to expand knowledge surrounding infections by the Acanthocephala phylum and the nuances of identi
