The inversion of the keto-enol stability order of dialuric acid on ionization was calculated and verified experimentally. The radical cations in both forms were characterized. The spectrum of the keto form was observed upon direct ionization of dialuric acid under matrix conditions, whereas the enol form was formed upon a sequential electron-proton-proton attachment to alloxan under acidic aqueous condition. Facilitation of the one-electron oxidation of dialuric acid upon its enolization can result in a more effective formation of superoxide radical anion in the process of its auto-oxidation.

Using atomistic, semiempirical pseudopotential calculations, we show that if one assumes the simplest form of a surface state in a CdSe nanocrystal--an unpassivated surface anion site--one can explain theoretically several puzzling aspects regarding the observed temperature dependence of the radiative decay of excitons. Bloodstream forms of Trypanosoma brucei lack cytochromes and are, therefore, insensitive to cyanide. Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) infection is commonly associated with inflammatory reaction and neurological disease that occurs in the infected animals. Recurrent episodes of confusion are most commonly due to transient brain dysfunction related to vascular, epileptic or metabolic abnormalities. We report here a 54-year-old patient who, in the months following an extensive surgery of the small intestine, developed several acute confusional episodes characterized by encephalopathic signs (such as behavioral changes, desorientation and somnolence), ataxia, nystagmus and dysarthria. A metalloaminopeptidase was identified in culture fluids collected during in vitro cultivation of adult Ascaris suum. The enzyme was purified by anion-exchange and size-exclusion HPLC. The beta-lactamases of seven strains of Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. achromogenes resistant to amoxicillin (MIC > 1024 mg/l) and responsible for furunculosis in farmed Atlantic salmon in Scotland were examined to establish the mechanisms of beta-lactam resistance.
