Myocardial Strain in Perioperative Medicine: A Practical Review for Anesthesiologists.

Myocardial strain imaging, derived from speckle-tracking echocardiography (STE), has evolved from a research tool into a reproducible technique for detecting subclinical myocardial dysfunction. Recent advances in automated contouring and artificial intelligence have improved feasibility, reproducibility, and analysis speed, making multichamber strain assessment increasingly accessible in perioperative practice. Perioperative cardiovascular complications, including myocardial injury after non-cardiac surgery (MINS), postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF), and heart failure, are associated wit

Surgical management of a penetrating cardiac foreign body causing tamponade in a dog: case report.

BACKGROUND: Penetrating cardiac foreign bodies are rare in dogs but can result in life-threatening complications, including pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade. Prompt diagnosis, emergency stabilization, and definitive surgical management are essential to achieve a favorable outcome. CASE REPORT: An 8-year-old spayed female mixed-breed dog weighing 11.3 kg was presented for evaluation of lethargy. The owner suspected that a foreign body had become lodged in the left lateral thoracic wall approximately 24 h earlier. Thoracic radiographs identified a metallic foreign body within the four

The platelet to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio is associated with thyroid hormone abnormalities based on NHANES 2007 to 2012 data.

Thyroid hormone abnormalities are closely associated with metabolic and cardiovascular diseases, yet easily accessible predictors remain limited. This study aimed to investigate the association between the platelet/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (PHR) and thyroid hormone levels, including thyroid dysfunction. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 2007 to 2012 were analyzed. Weighted multiple linear and logistic regression models were used to assess the relationship between PHR and thyroid hormone levels, as well as the prevalence of thyroi

Assessment of ECG Changes in Hypothyroid Patients and Their Correlation with Serum TSH Levels.

BACKGROUND: Hypothyroidism, a common endocrine disorder, is known to influence cardiovascular physiology, particularly through its effects on cardiac electrophysiology. Electrocardiographic (ECG) abnormalities, such as bradycardia, low-voltage complexes, and prolonged QT intervals, are frequently observed. The relationship between the severity of hypothyroidism, often measured by serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels, and the extent of ECG changes remains a subject of clinical relevance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional observational study was conducted over a period of si

Gemigliptin, a potent selective dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitor, protects endothelial progenitor cells by oxidative stress via caspase-3 dependent pathway.

Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) are exclusive players in vasculogenesis and endothelial regeneration. EPCs are of two types and their differentiation is mediated by different growth factors. A decrease in EPC number and function causes cardiovascular abnormalities and reduced angiogenesis. Various studies has documented a role of EPCs in diabetes. EPCs treatment with different drugs improve insulin secretion but causes other abnormalities. In vivo and in vitro studies have reported anti glycation effect of gemigliptin but no data is available on in vitro effect of gemigliptin on EPC number

Association between cardio-ankle vascular index and cardiometabolic risk factors in HIV patients in Ghana.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is associated with increased cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) even in patients with viral suppression by combination antiretroviral therapy (cART). Arterial stiffness is an independent predictor of CVDs in diseased individuals and the general population. Cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) is an index of arterial stiffness that has been shown to predict target organ damage. CAVI is less studied in HIV patients. We compared the levels of arterial stiffness using CAVI and associated factors among cART-treated and cART-naïve HIV patients to those of non-H

Seroprevalence and risk factors for rubella infection in pregnant women attending a tertiary hospital in Kano-Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION: rubella is a leading cause of vaccine preventable birth defects especially in developing countries. Acquisition of infection with the rubella virus in early pregnancy exposes the fetus to a very high chance of developing congenital rubella syndrome. The neonate is born with multiple abnormalities with the triad of congenital cataract, deafness and cardiovascular abnormalities like ventricular septal defect or patent ductus arteriosus. Limited data exist on the seroprevalence of rubella antibodies in pregnant women in Nigeria. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevale

Temporal changes in coronary artery function and flow velocity reserve in mice exposed to chronic intermittent hypoxia.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a chronic condition characterized by intermittent hypoxia (IH) that is implicated in an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (i.e., coronary heart disease, CHD) and associated with increased overall and cardiac-specific mortality. Accordingly, we tested the hypothesis that experimental IH progressively impairs coronary vascular function and in vivo coronary flow reserve. METHODS: Male C57BL/6J mice (8-week-old) were exposed to IH (FiO2 21% 90 s-6% 90 s) or room air (RA; 21%) 12 h/day during the light cycle for 2, 6, 16, and 28 weeks. Coro

Impact of age and sex on hyperoxia-induced cardiovascular pathophysiology.

Hyperoxia is characterized by pronounced inflammatory responses, pulmonary cell apoptosis, and adverse cardiac remodeling due to an excess supply of oxygen. Hyperoxic episodes are frequent in mechanically ventilated patients and are associated with in-hospital mortality. This study extends the analysis of prior published research by our group as it investigates the influence of age in male and female rodents exposed to hyperoxic conditions. Age is an independent cardiovascular risk factor, often compounded by variables like obesity, diabetes, and a decline in sex hormones and their receptors.

Human phenotype ontology annotation and cluster analysis for pulmonary atresia to unravel clinical outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary atresia (PA) is a heterogeneous congenital heart defect and ventricular septal defect (VSD) is the most vital factor for the conventional classification of PA patients. The simple dichotomy could not fully describe the cardiac morphologies and pathophysiology in such a complex disease. We utilized the Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO) database to explore the phenotypic patterns of PA and the phenotypic influence on prognosis. METHODS: We recruited 786 patients with diagnoses of PA between 2008 and 2016 at Fuwai Hospital. According to cardiovascular phenotypes of patients, w

Pathogenic Mechanisms Underlying Cirrhotic Cardiomyopathy.

Cardiac dysfunction associated with cirrhosis in the absence of preexisting heart disease is a condition known as cirrhotic cardiomyopathy (CCM). Cardiac abnormalities consist of enlargement of cardiac chambers, attenuated systolic and diastolic contractile responses to stress stimuli, and repolarization changes. CCM may contribute to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality after liver transplantation and other major surgeries, and also to the pathogenesis of hepatorenal syndrome. The underlying mechanisms of CCM are poorly understood and as such medical therapy is an area of unmet medical need

Automatic Detection of Atrial Fibrillation in ECG Using Co-Occurrence Patterns of Dynamic Symbol Assignment and Machine Learning.

Early detection of atrial fibrillation from electrocardiography (ECG) plays a vital role in the timely prevention and diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. Various algorithms have been proposed; however, they are lacking in considering varied-length signals, morphological transitions, and abnormalities over long-term recordings. We propose dynamic symbolic assignment (DSA) to differentiate a normal sinus rhythm (SR) from paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). We use ECG signals and their interbeat (RR) intervals from two public databases namely, AF Prediction Challenge Database (AFPDB) and AF T
