The blood alcohol curve as a function of time and type of beverage: methodological considerations.

Six male subjects came to the laboratory on three different occasions and drank either spirits, wine, or beer. The spirits drink contained 1.0 ml of pure alcohol/kg body wt. and the other two drinks were 20% larger. The blood alcohol curve was monitored every 15 min. The mean peak level was roughly the same for the three types of beverages although the peak was reached later for wine and beer. For spirits and beer the curve dropped off smoothly after the peak was reached while for wine the peak level was maintained for about 60 min. Individual curves varied greatly for all three beverage types

Environmental factor driven microbial interactions regulate flavor metabolisms in polymicrobial fermented alcoholic beverages: A dynamic coupling framework.

Fermented alcoholic beverages are globally cherished for their diverse sensory profiles, shaped by complex microbial metabolism. Environmentally-driven microbial interactions play a significant role in regulating the synthesis of flavor metabolites. However, mechanisms linking environmental factors to microbial interactions and flavor formation are unclear, hindering the optimization of fermented alcoholic beverages. This work systematically discussed regulatory mechanisms by which microbial interactions govern flavor formation in environment-driven polymicrobial fermentation processes of alco

Dose-Response Relationship Between Alcohol Consumption and Gout Risk: Do Subtypes of Alcoholic Beverages Make a Difference?

OBJECTIVE: Although previous studies have explored the association of drinking with gout risk, we sought to explore the dose-response relationship and the evidence between subtypes of alcoholic beverages and gout risk. METHODS: The weekly alcoholic beverage consumption of patients in the UK Biobank was collected and calculated. The Cox regression model was applied to assess the effects of drinking alcohol in general and its subtypes on gout risk by calculating the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% CIs. Additionally, the restricted cubic splines were used to estimate the dose-response relationship bet

Gas chromatographic determination of micro amounts of cyanide residues in wines, distilled liquors, and other alcoholic beverages.

A gas chromatographic method for the determination of cyanide residues in alcoholic beverages has been developed from procedures previously reported for application to water samples. Quantitatively isolating HCN from alcoholic beverages presented difficulties not encountered with aqueous solutions, particularly in the presence of S02 in the sample. HCN was liberated from the acidified sample by heating at 70 degrees C, flushed into an NaOH absorber solution, converted to cyanogen bromide (CNBr), extracted into diisopropyl ether, chromatographed on a Porapak Q column, and detected by an electro

Alcoholic beverages and adenomatous polyps of the sigmoid colon: a study of male self-defence officials in Japan.

The drinking habits of 86 men with adenomatous polyps of the sigmoid colon were compared to those of 1184 men with normal colonoscopy among middle-aged male self-defence officials. After adjustment for rank, smoking history and rice consumption, total ethanol intake was positively associated with the risk of adenomatous polyps. The odds ratio (OR) was 2.4 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.0-5.5) for men consuming at least 60 ml of ethanol per day. Among five alcoholic beverages (shochu, beer, sake, whiskey and wine), both sake and beer showed a dose-response relationship with the risk of adenoma

Prevalence and Correlates of Non-Alcoholic Beverage Consumption Among People Living with HIV: A Potential Alcohol Reduction Strategy.

Unhealthy alcohol use is prevalent among people living with HIV (PLH) and is associated with worse HIV care outcomes. Non-alcoholic beverages (NABs; beer, wine, or spirits containing 0.0% to 0.5% alcohol by volume) may represent a novel alcohol reduction strategy; however, the prevalence and correlates of NAB use among PLH remain unexamined. This study utilized baseline data from the Florida Cohort Study (N = 589; June 2024-October 2025). Self-report measures assessed past 12-month NAB consumption and likelihood of future NAB use. Multivariable logistic regression models examined sociodemograp

Diagnostic meaning of urinary ethyl glucoside concentrations in relationship to alcoholic beverage consumption.

Incidents and accidents often involve the drinking of alcoholic beverages. We investigated compounds that indicate the consumption of alcoholic beverages even after ethanol (EtOH) becomes undetectable in blood and urine. Ethyl glucoside (EG) has been isolated as a possible drinking marker, and a GC-MS/MS method for EG isomers has been developed. EG isomers in several alcoholic beverages were analyzed. In sake, only αEG was observed in high concentrations. In wine and beer, both α and βEG were detected. Whisky, however, did not contain EG. EtOH and EG concentrations were analyzed in urine up to

Smoking, type of alcoholic beverage and squamous-cell oesophageal cancer in northern Italy.

Between 1992 and 1997, we conducted a case-control study of oesophageal cancer in 3 areas of northern Italy. Cases were 275 men, ages 39-77 years (median age 60), with a first incident squamous-cell carcinoma of the oesophagus. Controls were 593 men, ages 36-77 years (median age 60) admitted for acute illnesses, unrelated to tobacco and alcohol, to major hospitals of the areas under surveillance. Number of daily cigarettes was strongly associated with risk [odds ratio (OR) for > or =25 cigarettes/day = 7.0)]. Long-duration smoking showed particularly elevated ORs (OR = 6.4 for > or =35 years),
