Effect of blinking on the measurement of tear evaporation rate.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the reliability and agreement of tear film evaporation measurements under different blinking conditions. METHODS: Ninety-six healthy volunteers (96 eyes) were recruited. Tear evaporation was measured using the Eye Vapometer under four randomized conditions: no-blinking, natural blinking, controlled blinking (one blink every 3 s), and eyes-closed. Raw evaporation rates were recorded in three consecutive measurements for each condition. Tear evaporation rates (TER) were calculated by subtracting the raw evaporation rate with eyes-closed from the other three conditions. Reli

High-speed infrared imaging analysis of spontaneous versus reflex blinking.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Blinking plays a vital role in protecting the eye and maintaining ocular surface health. Understanding blink behaviour may help identify ocular surface disorders and detect blink abnormalities associated with systemic or neurological conditions. BACKGROUND: This study assessed the kinematic characteristics of spontaneous blinking versus mechanically evoked reflex blinking and explored their relationship with potentially related ocular surface characteristics. METHODS: This pilot study used high-speed infrared imaging to capture spontaneous and reflex blinking in 11 partic

Investigating the Biomechanics to Mimic Blinking using an Electromagnetic Actuator.

The Bionic Lid Implant for Natural Closure (BLINC) is an active implantable medical device aimed at restoring blinking for people with facial nerve paralysis (FNP), with the aim to restore complete, symmetrical, function. BLINC utilizes electromagnetic force to actuate a sling implanted in the upper eyelid. The horizontal pull translates to the downward movement of the eyelid to mimic a blink. Current work aims to move this project from laboratory to clinic, by gaining a better understanding of the biomechanics required to achieve these goals in humans. This follows a chronic large animal stud

Excessive blinking as an initial manifestation of juvenile Huntington's disease.

Juvenile Huntington's disease (JHD) is mostly characterized by rigidity, myoclonus, bradykinesia, dystonia and seizure. We report a 9-year-old male JHD patient presenting excessive blinking as the initial symptom two years prior to typical JHD symptoms. Genetic analysis revealed expansion of 108 CAG repeats and magnetic resonance imaging showed caudate atrophy with lateral ventricular enlargement.

Psychiatric correlates of repetitive rhythmic blinking on a routine EEG.

Our findings suggest that EEG tracings dominated by repetitive rhythmic blinking (RRB) may be indicative of a functional rather than an organic brain disorder. Evaluation of organicity in psychiatric patients is the most common reason for obtaining an EEG. As a normal EEG does not totally rule out organic involvement, such findings as the presence of RRB on the record may strengthen the value of EEG in such evaluations. More research is necessary to further delineate the relation between increased blinking and functional psychiatric disorders.

The Roles of Alpha Oscillations in Attentional Blink.

The attentional blink (AB) refers to impaired processing of a second target (T2) when presented 200-500 msec after a first target (T1) in a rapid serial visual presentation stream. There is converging evidence that alpha oscillations (8-12 Hz) may be critical for AB performance, as they can regulate attentional control and suppress distractor interference. This study investigated the effects of neuromodulation of alpha activities via transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) on AB. Alpha tACS may either reduce the AB magnitude at intermediate lags by modulating inhibitory control (th

Dynamics of the attentional blink in preverbal infants.

In the first months postterm, human infants are traditionally viewed as passive to their environment, unable to focus or sustain attention on specific objects. Here, we asked whether 4-mo-old infants could engage their attention strongly enough in a visual task to block the perception of a subsequent interesting stimulus-a phenomenon known as attentional blink, which in adults reflects a serial processing bottleneck for accessing a central workspace. We presented three successive visual events: a central teddy bear (T1) followed by a lateralized face and scrambled face (T2) at varying stimulus

Revisiting eye blink in Parkinson's disease.

Spontaneous blinking is a rapid and unconscious type of blinking that has been linked to several cognitive processes. Blink rate has been established as a reliable measure of cognitive processing and a predictor of dopamine-related cognitive function. Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) have a reduced spontaneous blink rate. In this study, we propose an additional measure of blink characteristic, namely blink duration, and evaluate its alteration in a large cohort of 107 patients with PD. We also investigate the relationship between blink rate and blink duration and disease characteristics

Eye blinks as a visual processing stage.

Humans blink their eyes frequently during normal viewing, more often than it seems necessary for keeping the cornea well lubricated. Since the closure of the eyelid disrupts the image on the retina, eye blinks are commonly assumed to be detrimental to visual processing. However, blinks also provide luminance transients rich in spatial information to neural pathways highly sensitive to temporal changes. Here, we report that the luminance modulations from blinks enhance visual sensitivity. By coupling high-resolution eye tracking in human observers with modeling of blink transients and spectral

[Blink and you live: the locked-in syndrome].

INTRODUCTION: The Locked-In syndrome (LIS) is defined by: (i) the presence of sustained eye opening (bilateral ptosis should be ruled out as a complicating factor); (ii) preserved awareness; (iii) aphonia or hypophonia; (iv) quadriplegia or quadriparesis; and (v) a primary mode of communication that uses vertical or lateral eye movement or blinking. Acute ventral pontine lesions are its most common cause. Following such brainstem lesions patients may remain comatose for some time and then gradually awaken, remaining paralyzed and voiceless, superficially resembling the vegetative state. BACKG

Analysis of blink rate in patients with blepharospasm.

The blink rate (BR) during rest, conversation, and reading was assessed in 50 patients with blepharospasm (BS) and in 150 healthy subjects. BR at rest and during conversation was higher in patients with BS. Moreover, 76% of patients had BR higher at rest than during conversation, whereas in 74% of controls, BR was higher during conversation than at rest. The sensitivity and specificity of two parameters (value of BR at rest and pattern rest-BR higher than conversation-BR) in discriminating patients and controls were computed. The best fit was obtained with a rest-BR above 27 blinks per minute.

Blink reflex abnormalities in Tourette syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Tourette syndrome (TS) is a not uncommon disorder which represents the most complex manifestation of the spectrum of tic disorders, with onset during childhood or early adolescence. There are no definitive tests for diagnosis of TS. The objective of this study has been to demonstrate whether neurophysiological abnormalities of the blink reflex can be observed in patients affected with TS and correlate with the severity of TS. METHODS: We enrolled 17 patients with Tourette syndrome, diagnosed according to DSM IV Diagnostic Criteria, and 10 healthy volunteers. Tic severity was assess

Blink reflex abnormalities in diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Damage of the peripheral nervous system is particularly frequent in diabetes mellitus (DM), but somatic cranial neuropathies usually presenting as mononeuropathies are rare. Oculomotor and facial nerves are among the most commonly affected, whereas the Vth, IXth and Xth cranial nerves are less often affected. While existing neurophysiological tests in the subclinical diagnosis of damage to the peripheral nerve in diabetic patients have advanced, the same does not hold true for the subclinical diagnosis of the central nervous system (CNS). Electrophysiological studies such as the bl

[Significance of the blink reflex in the Wallenberg syndrome].

The blink reflex was studied in 38 cases with lateral medullary lesions (Wallenberg syndrome). Twenty-one blink reflexes were abnormal. The most common abnormality is an afferent delay in the late reflex on the side of the lesion with a normal early reflex. This abnormality is not pathognomonic of the Wallenberg syndrome. The physiopathogeny is discussed.

Blink reflexes in posterior fossa lesions.

Blink reflexes obtained by electrical stimulation of the supraorbital nerve and electromyographic recording of the orbicularis oculi muscle proved useful as a preliminary method in diagnosis of lesions of the brainstem and the fifth and seventh cranial nerves, and in differentiating intrinsic lesions of the brainstem from extrinsic ones. It was noted that R1 and R2 reflexes were different in the two types of lesions.

The Various Ways in Which Birds Blink.

There has, to date, been no systematic study of the various ways in which birds blink. Digital video recordings were made, and studied using still frames, of 524 bird species, mainly in zoos but also in the wild. Videos on 106 species from various sites on the internet were studied, some of which we had also videoed, giving a total of 591 (out of a possible 10,000) species from all 43 orders and 125 (out of a possible 249) families. Digital video recordings were also made of 15 (out of a possible 24) species of crocodile. Three types of blink were observed in birds: (1) Nictitating membrane bl

The photic blink reflex as an index of photophobia.

Two recent studies of eye closure triggered by intense luminance increase suggest that this behavior reflects the melanopsin-based retinal activity known to underlie photophobia, the pathological aversion to light (Kardon, 2012; Kaiser et al., 2021). Early studies of the photic blink reflex (PBR) are reviewed to help guide future research on this possible objective index of photophobia. Electromyographic recordings of the lid-closure muscle, orbicularis oculi, reveal distinct bursts with typical onset latencies of 50 and 80 ms, R50 and R80, respectively. The latter component appears to be espe
