A blood safety perspective on emerging arboviral infections in the United Kingdom.

A core focus of the blood services is to maintain the blood supply whilst simultaneously being vigilant for potential threats to blood safety. At present, West Nile virus (WNV), Usutu virus (USUV), Dengue virus (DENV) and Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) are considered primary arboviral threats to blood safety in the UK and Northern Europe. Climate change and globalisation have enhanced the frequency of WNV and DENV cases being reported in Europe, furthering the likelihood of their spread to the UK. Furthermore, both TBEV and USUV have already been identified in reservoir hosts in England

Safety of Autologous Cord Blood Cells for Preterms: A Descriptive Study.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth complications are one of the leading causes of death among children under 5 years of age. Despite advances in medical care, many survivors face a lifetime of disability, including mental and physical retardation, and chronic lung disease. More recently, both allogenic and autogenic cord blood cells have been applied in the treatment of neonatal conditions such as hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). OBJECTIVE: To assess the safety of autologous, volume- and red blood cell- (RBC-) reduced, noncryopreserved umbilical cord blood (U

Efforts in blood safety: Integrated approach for serological diagnosis of syphilis.

Recent efforts in transfusion medicine are focused on improving blood safety as well as establishing effective and efficient diagnostic algorithms for donor screening. To date, syphilis is a transfusion-transmitted infection re-emerged in many countries as a public health threat especially among populations at specific risk. This task requires new diagnostic tools and hemovigilance programs. The current diagnostic methodologies are debated, since presenting limitations and unresolved issues with special regard to the clinical interpretation of serological patterns, especially in asymptomatic p

Safety and efficacy of AS-1 red blood cell use in neonates.

Many Regional Blood Centers are providing AS-1(Adsol preservative) red blood cells (RBCs) as a standard product because of the extended shelf life (42 days). The use of AS-1 RBCs is concerning in neonates because of high exposure to dextrose, adenine and mannitol. We conducted this study to evaluate the safety and efficacy of AS-1 RBC use in neonates. We assigned one unit of AS-1 RBCs to each infant for small volume transfusions (15 ml/kg) for the life of the unit (42 days). The study was conducted for one year. The infants under 1500 g were included in the study. We measured the pre- and post

The patient safety in extracorporeal blood purification treatments of critical patients.

Today, health systems are complex due to both the technological development in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and the complexity of the patients that are increasingly older with several comorbidities. In any care setting, latent, organizational, and systematic errors can occur causing critical incident harmful for patients. Management of patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) requires a multidisciplinary approach for the diagnostic-therapeutic-rehabilitative path that can also require an extracorporeal blood purification treatment (EBPT). The complexity of these patients and EBPT requi

Review of blood donor deferral with emphasis on donor and patient safety.

INTRODUCTION: Blood donor deferral is a part and parcel of the commitment of the blood transfusion services to assure the safety and health of the blood donor as well as the recipient. Periodic review of blood donor deferral is to incorporate or revoke deferral reasons based on the evidence generated in the process of review. Therefore, emphasis must be laid on preparing strategies to only judiciously defer blood donors, recruit and retain first time blood donors, which needs critical appraisal of the existing deferral policies, so that the evidence based changes can be done. MATERIAL AND MET

Blood sampling guidelines with focus on patient safety and identification - a review.

It has been well documented over recent years that the preanalytical phase is a leading contributor to errors in the total testing process (TTP). There has however been great progress made in recent years due to the exponential growth of working groups specialising in the field. Patient safety is clearly at the forefront of any healthcare system and any reduction in errors at any stage will improve patient safety. Venous blood collection is a key step in the TTP, and here we review the key errors that occur in venous phlebotomy process and summarise the evidence around their significance to pa

Designing property specifications to improve the safety of the blood transfusion process.

Computer scientists use a number of well-established techniques that have the potential to improve the safety of patient care processes. One is the formal definition of a process; the other is the formal definition of the properties of a process. Even highly regulated processes, such as laboratory specimen acquisition and transfusion therapy, use guidelines that may be vague, misunderstood, and hence erratically implemented. Examining processes in a systematic way has led us to appreciate the potential variability in routine health care practice and the impact of this variability on patient sa

Feasibility and safety of AS-3 red blood cells for neonatal transfusions.

OBJECTIVES: Most extremely low birth weight (<1 kg) infants receive red blood cell (RBC) transfusions. RBCs stored up to 42 days can be transfused safely in small volumes to preterm infants; however, because the formulation of RBC anticoagulant/preservative solutions differs, clinical studies are required to document the safety of each solution before widespread use. Our goal was to study the feasibility and safety of AS-3 anticoagulant/preservative solution to preterm infants. STUDY DESIGN: Two clinical studies were conducted in sequence: (1) a randomized trial to compare RBC transfusions gi

Improving blood safety: NAT-based detection of Plasmodium spp. in blood donors in endemic areas of Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Transfusion-transmitted malaria remains a significant challenge in endemic areas and is a leading cause of blood donation deferral. Rigorous clinical and molecular screening is essential to ensure the safety of blood components. The presence of low-density Plasmodium spp. parasitemia in asymptomatic individuals can compromise transfusion safety and perpetuate disease transmission. This study aimed to describe malaria positivity detected by the NAT PLUS HIV/HBV/HCV/Malaria kit (Bio-Manguinhos), as well as to characterize the epidemiological profile of blood donors and the main defer

Factors influencing candidate blood donors' deferral, retention and blood safety in Tanzania: A prospective cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Several Tanzanian regions fall short of annual whole blood donation targets. Understanding what motivates first-time and repeat donors, and whether certain recruitment and retention strategies may affect blood safety, is essential to improving retention and ensuring a safe blood supply. This study aimed to identify variables associated with pre-donation deferral, donor retention and transfusion-transmitted infection (TTI) prevalence in Tanzanian (candidate) blood donors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between February and April 2023, 1471 (candidate) donors were surveyed at

A preliminary survey on the use of ART among blood donors in Shenzhen China and its implications to blood safety.

IMPORTANCE: The recent introduction of the AIDS pre-exposure or post-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP/PEP) medication has sparked fear of the possible increase of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Treponema pallidum (TP) transfusion-transmission risk due to the potential administration of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in blood donors. However, the extent to which ART drugs are currently being utilized by blood donors in China remains to be clarified. OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of ART drug use in individuals who attempted to donate blood but were eventually rejected due to anti-HIV and/
