Flushing emissions of methane and carbon dioxide from mangrove soils during tidal cycles.

Mangroves are transition areas connecting land, freshwater, and the ocean, where a great amount of organic carbon accumulates in the soil, forming a considerable carbon sink. However, the soil might also be a source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This study hypothesized that measuring GHG emissions solely during low tides can represent diurnal GHG emissions in mangroves. Methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions were quantified during tidal cycles using an ultraportable gas analyzer in Kandelia obovata (without pneumatophores) and Avicennia marina (with pneumatophores) mangroves in

The potential for bacteria from carbon-limited deep terrestrial environments to participate in chlorine cycling.

Bacteria capable of dehalogenation via reductive or hydrolytic pathways are ubiquitous. Little is known, however, about the prevalence of bacterial dechlorination in deep terrestrial environments with a limited carbon supply. In this study we analyzed published genomes from three deep terrestrial subsurface sites: a deep aquifer in Western Siberia, the Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota, USA, and the Soudan Underground Iron Mine (SUIM) in Minnesota, USA to determine if there was evidence to suggest that microbial dehalogenation was possible in these environments. Diverse deh

Response addition is more protective of biogeochemical cycles of carbon and phosphorus compared to concentration addition.

In soils, enzymes are crucial to catalyzing reactions and cycling elements such as carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P). Although these soil enzymes are sensitive to metals, they are often disregarded in risk assessments, and regulatory laws governing their existence are unclear. Nevertheless, there is a need to develop regulatory standards for metal mixtures that protect biogeochemical cycles because soil serve as a sink for metals and exposures occur as mixtures. Using a fixed ratio ray design, we investigated the effects of 5 single metals and 10 quinary mixtures of Zn, Cu, Ni, Pb,

Micronutrients in support to the one carbon cycle for the modulation of blood fasting homocysteine in PCOS women.

PURPOSE: Fasting blood homocysteine is increased in PCOS women and is involved in several of its co-morbidities including cardiovascular disease and infertility. Corrective interventions based on the administration of supra-physiologic doses of folic acid work to a low extent. We aimed to test an alternative approach. METHODS: This was a prospective, randomized, parallel group, open label, controlled versus no treatment clinical study. PCOS women aged > 18, free from systemic diseases and from pharmacological treatments were randomized with a 2:1 ratio for treatment with activated micronutrie

Cs(2) fixation by carbonic anhydrase model systems-a new substrate in the catalytic cycle.

The conversion of CS(2) with common carbonic anhydrase model systems has been studied using Hartree-Fock and density-functional theory methods employing the 6-311+G basis set. The calculated geometries and energetical parameters for [L(3)ZnOH](+)/CS(2) model systems (L = NH(3), imidazole) are compared with those obtained previously for the CO(2) hydration. While the same reaction mechanism applies for both heterocumulenes, the hypothetical conversion of CS(2) to give [L(3)ZnSC(O)SH](+) is characterized by a higher barrier and is much more exothermic than the corresponding CO(2) reaction cascad

Cyclic neutropenia and T lymphocyte suppression of granulopoiesis: abrogation of the neutropenic cycles by lithium carbonate.

To investigate the mechanisms of cyclic neutropenia, we studied the capacity of a patient's T lymphocytes (TLp) to interact with monocyte-macrophages from her normal HLA-identical sibling (MOb) in the elaboration of colony-stimulating activity (CSA). TLp obtained at the time of decreasing neutrophil counts, increased CSA elaboration (p less than 0.056) when incubated at a 1:1 ratio with MOb. Increasing the TLp to MOb ratios to 3:1 or 5:1 progressively decreased CSA. Also, lithium carbonate, which ordinarily prevents concanavalin A activation of suppressor TL, failed to do so, suggesting that p

Atractylodes lancea (Thunb.) DC polysaccharide alleviates MASH by regulating the 1‑carbon cycle through intestinal flora remodelling.

Metabolic-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) is a severe stage of Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). Currently, effective pharmacological therapies for MASH are extremely limited. An Atractylodes lancea (Thunb.) DC polysaccharide (ALP) was isolated from Atractylodes lancea (Thunb.) DC, and its preventive effect on MASH and the potential mechanism were investigated. Mice were fed a high-fat and methionine/choline-deficient diet (HFMCD) to induce MASH. MASH model mice were then treated with ALP at low (50 mg/kg/d) or high (100 mg/kg/d) dosages. R&D expenditure and firm-level carbon emissions across firm life-cycle stages: Evidence from BRICS countries.

In this study, we examine the association between firm-level R&D expenditure, used as a general innovation input, and firm-level carbon emissions across life-cycle stages of listed non-financial firms in BRICS economies over 2000-2023. Using S&P Trucost firm-level carbon data matched with S&P Capital IQ Pro financial variables, the results indicate that R&D expenditure is positively associated with carbon emissions on average. This association, however, varies substantially across life-cycle stages. The marginal emissions effect of R&D is weaker for Growth and Mature firms, suggesting that fir

The importance of the one carbon cycle nutritional support in human male fertility: a preliminary clinical report.

BACKGROUND: Sperm chromatin structure is often impaired; mainly due to oxidative damage. Antioxidant treatments do not consistently produce fertility improvements and, when given at high doses, they might block essential oxidative processes such as chromatin compaction. This study was intended to assess the effect on male sub-fertility of a pure one carbon cycle nutritional support without strong antioxidants. METHODS: Male partners of couples resistant to at least 2 assisted reproductive technology (ART) attempts, with no evidence of organic causes of infertility and with either DNA fragment

L-Cysteine boosts Fe2+/Fe3+ cycling in Fe-doped cellulose-derived hydrothermal carbonation carbon for enhanced peroxydisulfate activation and diclofenac degradation.

L-cysteine (L-Cys) is an ideal cocatalyst that enhances the redox cycle of transition metals and accelerates chemical processes, widely used for promoting pollutant degradation in homogeneous systems. However, its role in heterogeneous systems, mechanisms and pathways, remains unclear. In this study, iron-based hydrothermal carbonation carbon (HTCC-Fe) was prepared by reconstituting reed cellulose through hydrothermal carbonization, acid etching, and Fe doping methods. L-Cys promoted the conversion of Fe3+ to Fe2+, which in turn strengthened peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation and increased react

2,3-Butanediol dehydrogenase is more efficient than acetoin reductase at metabolizing reserve carbon to improve carbon cycling pathways in Lactococcus lactis N8.

Acetoin (AC) and 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BDO) are metabolites produced by lactic acid bacteria using glucose as a carbon source. These two metabolites act as carbon reserves and can be reutilised by the cells. In this study, we investigated the enzymatic characteristics of acetoin reductase (ButA) and 2,3-butanediol dehydrogenase (ButB). The performance of butA or/and butB knockout mutants of Lactococcus lactis N8 was evaluated. ButA and ButB were heterologously expressed in E. coli, and their enzymatic characteristics were measured in vitro under different pH, temperature, and metal ion condition

Elevated heterotrophic activity in Guaymas Basin hydrothermal plumes influences deep-sea carbon cycling.

Deep-sea hydrothermal plumes are characterized by chemoautotrophic production fueled by the oxidation of reduced inorganic substrates. Recently, organic carbon cycling was proposed, but the metabolic fate of organic carbon is unconstrained. Here, we investigate organic carbon metabolisms in and around a hydrothermal plume to constrain the impacts of hydrothermal vents on deep-sea carbon cycling. Acetate and methanol are detected throughout the water column and are rapidly metabolized in Guaymas Basin waters. Heterotrophic production, up to 7.69 µg C L-1 d-1, greatly exceeds chemoautotrophic pr

Microbially Driven Iron Cycling Facilitates Organic Carbon Accrual in Decadal Biochar-Amended Soil.

Soil organic carbon (SOC) is pivotal for both agricultural activities and climate change mitigation, and biochar stands as a promising tool for bolstering SOC and curtailing soil carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. However, the involvement of biochar in SOC dynamics and the underlying interactions among biochar, soil microbes, iron minerals, and fresh organic matter (FOM, such as plant debris) remain largely unknown, especially in agricultural soils after long-term biochar amendment. We therefore introduced FOM to soils with and without a decade-long history of biochar amendment, performed soil mi

Effects of tetracycline on nitrogen and carbon cycling rates and microbial abundance in sediments with and without biochar amendment.

Nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) biogeochemical processes, such as denitrification and organic matter decomposition, are critical in determining ecological functions in aquatic environments. The overuse of antibiotics in human and veterinary medicine has resulted in the ubiquitous presence of these contaminants in lakes, rivers and other water bodies worldwide. However, the effects of antibiotic residues on N and C cycling processes and associated microbial communities are not well understood. Here, 44-day incubation experiments were conducted to examine the impact of tetracycline on nitrification,

Potential phosphorous mobilization in subtropical forest soils triggered by labile carbon coupled to iron cycling.

Phosphorus (P) exhibits a strong affinity for iron (Fe) oxides, which limits its bioavailability in soils. Reductive dissolution of ferric iron (Fe3+) can release occluded and adsorbed P into soil matrix. However, the mechanisms governing how Fe3+ reduction influences P mobilization remain poorly understood, particularly in highly weathered subtropical soils characterized by fluctuating redox potentials (Eh) and variable carbon (C) availability. This investigation explored the impacts of readily decomposable C substrates (formate, acetate, propionate, and oxalate) on Fe reduction, P release, a

Restored wetlands: interplay between environmental variables, aboveground and belowground plant traits, and carbon cycling.

Wetlands are crucial for biodiversity and climate change mitigation. Vast wetland areas have been lost through land-use intensification. Thus, restoration efforts have gained attention globally. We assessed relationships between environmental conditions, aboveground and belowground plant traits and carbon cycling in restored wetlands in Denmark, both grazed and ungrazed, compared to a baseline in near-natural wetlands. Wetland plant species strategy varied from acquisitive to conservative. More conservative species tended to have larger root diameters and higher percentages of root aerenchyma.

Large mammalian herbivores influence the deployment of microbial extracellular enzymes to control soil carbon cycling.

UNLABELLED: Large mammalian grazers have regulated biogeochemical cycles across 40% of the Earth's terrestrial surface for millennia. While grazer effects on organic matter entering the soil are becoming clear, their effect on the downstream microbial foraging through extracellular-enzymes (EE), which link processes at the cellular level to ecosystem-level flow of matter remain less clear. We assessed how large mammalian grazers influence microbial foraging in soil using two lines of evidence. First, utilising a 14-year-old long-term grazer-exclusion experiment in the Trans-Himalayan ecosystem

Solar-driven catalytic platforms for closed-loop carbon cycling: CO2 assisting biomass conversion.

The high-value utilization of biomass materials has emerged as a research hotspot, yet the underlying mechanisms and selectivity regulation of photothermal synergy conversion remain underexplored, especially for the CO2 coupling with biomass molecular conversion. Sugar-based molecules, serving as critical renewable resources, have achieved large-scale applications. Based on the strategy of high-quality development around the world, this review systematically intends to conclude the high-value transformation pathways of biomass-derived materials (particularly sugar) coupled with CO2, delving in

Regulation of desiccation-immersion cycle on the rate and fate of dissolved organic carbon release by Ulva pertusa.

Macroalgae widely distribute in intertidal zones, one of blue carbon organisms. However, the regulatory mechanisms of tide on the carbon sequestration of macroalgae are still unclear. This study explored the effects of desiccation-rewetting cycles induced by tide on dissolved organic carbon (DOC) release from Ulva pertusa, which is prevalent from high to low tidal zones. Results showed that during desiccation stage, the DOC release of U. pertusa varied with desiccation levels, releasing 0.082, 0.22, and 0.35 mg g-1 FW at 0%, 40%, and 80% water loss, respectively, DOC accumulated on the surface

A Dynamic Succession-Based Life-Cycle Simulation Model for Projecting Carbon Source-Sink Transitions in Urban Plant Communities.

Urban plant communities are widely regarded as important nature-based solutions for climate mitigation, yet their actual carbon benefits remain uncertain: vegetation growth is accompanied by carbon emissions from construction and long-term maintenance, and existing assessments rarely integrate community succession, interspecific competition, and maintenance-related emissions within a consistent life-cycle framework. To address these limitations, this study developed a dynamic succession-based life-cycle simulation model to project the 50-year carbon source-sink transitions of 150 typical urban
