The capacity of nutrient-limited forests to enhance carbon (C) sequestration under elevated CO2 (eCO2) remains a critical uncertainty in C cycle modeling. While existing evidence suggests that low phosphorus (P) bioavailability may constrain CO2 fertilization effects on plant growth, the extent to which this limitation modulates ecosystem responses to eCO2 in forests adapted to P-deficient soils remains poorly understood. Here, using eight P-enabled models, we simulated the magnitudes and mechanisms through which P bioavailability interacts with eCO2, emulating an ecosystem-scale P enrichment

Iron and organic carbon (OC) biogeochemical cycling is highly correlated, and dissolved organic matter (DOM), a highly reactive component of soil and water environments, is the main OC source. However, the micro-mechanism of the molecular fractionation of DOM, the spatial OC distribution on iron (oxyhydr)oxides, and how these factors further affect their redox properties remain to be fully understood. Therefore, this study investigated the DOM adsorption properties of iron (oxyhydr)oxides with different crystallinities at the molecular level through the Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonanc

With years of full-scale experience for precombustion CO(2) capture, amine-based technologies are emerging as the prime contender for postcombustion CO(2) capture. However, concerns for postcombustion applications have focused on the possible contamination of air or drinking water supplies downwind by potentially carcinogenic N-nitrosamines and N-nitramines released following their formation by NO(x) reactions with amines within the capture unit. Analytical methods for N-nitrosamines in drinking waters were adapted to measure specific N-nitrosamines and N-nitramines and total N-nitrosamines in

Carbon dioxide utilization is a key component of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology, with oil-producing microalgae-based carbon sequestration being particularly efficient. This study investigated the carbon sequestration potential and lipid metabolism of three marine microalgae (Chlorella sp., Isochrysis galbana, and Nannochloropsis oceanica) under CO2 concentrations ranging from 10% to 25%, covering typical industrial flue gas levels. The results showed that microalgae exhibited higher utilization efficiency at lower CO2 concentrations. Notably, Nannochloropsis oceanic

Intensive agriculture aggravates soil acidification and heavy metal contamination. Biochar and its composites are cost-effective, carbon-rich amendments that can influence both heavy metal and soil carbon cycling, yet their synergistic mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, a combination of the diffusive gradient in thin films (DGT) technique, Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS), and high-throughput sequencing was applied to investigate the effects of various biochar-based amendments: plain biochar, bacteria-inoculated biochar, and biochar combined with o

Phosphorus sequestration in wetland soils is a prerequisite for long-term maintenance of water quality in downstream aquatic systems, but can be compromised if phosphorus is released following changes in nutrient status or hydrological regimen. The association of phosphorus with relatively refractory natural organic matter (e.g., humic substances) might protect soil phosphorus from such changes. Here we used hydrofluoric acid (HF) pretreatment to remove phosphorus associated with metals or anionic sorption sites, allowing us to isolate a pool of phosphorus associated with the soil organic frac

Landfill gas (LFG), primarily composed of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), continues to escape from municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills despite mitigation strategies like gas collection systems and soil covers. A novel biogeochemical cover (BGCC), developed at the University of Illinois Chicago, aims to mitigate these fugitive emissions by incorporating a biochar-amended soil (BAS) layer for CH4 oxidation and a basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag layer for CO2 sequestration. However, the limited availability of BOF slag near landfill sites presents a barrier to large-scale implementation,

Air pollution, a major global challenge, poses significant risks to human health and the environment. While various porous materials have been used to reduce pollutants, they have limitations. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) stand out due to their unique combination of organic and inorganic components, allowing precise tuning of their structure and functionality. With remarkable properties such as tunable pore sizes and high porosity, MOFs are highly effective for CO2 separation. However, their fragility has led to the integration of bio-based materials such as nanocellulose. Nanocellulose, kn

Seaweed mariculture represents a promising blue-carbon strategy, but its carbon-sequestration dynamics and resilience to warming remain insufficiently constrained. Here, we conducted a comprehensive field assessment at a representative Porphyra (nori) mariculture farm in coastal China, where we monitored multisphere carbon pools across the water-column, sediments, atmosphere, and biomass. Multivariate statistical analysis and machine-learning models were used to identify stage-specific drivers and project carbon-pool responses under multiple warming scenarios. Our results demonstrate that Porp

Biochar-amended soils have been explored to enhance microbial methane (CH4) oxidation in landfill cover systems. Recently, research priorities have expanded to include the mitigation of other components of landfill gas such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) along with CH4. In this study, column tests were performed to simulate the newly proposed biogeochemical cover systems, which incorporate biochar-amended soil for CH4 oxidation and basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag for CO2 and H2S mitigation, to evaluate the effect of cover configuration on microbial CH4 oxidation and communi

In this study, nutrient properties and carbon sequestration potential of biochars derived from chicken manure (CM) impregnated with mineral salts (calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, ferric chloride) were evaluated. Pretreatment with mineral salts reduced phosphorus (P) availability via the formation of insoluble metal phosphate minerals. Less carbon was lost during the pyrolysis of pretreated CM, and the produced biochars (BCCa, BCMg, and BCFe) were more stable (i.e., reduced C loss during chemical oxidation and less CO2 release during incubation) than pristine biochars. Biological CO2 sequestration and storage as inert solid carbonates is a promising approach utilizing carbonic anhydrase. In present study, we report the synthesis of a magnetic carbonic anhydrase nanobiocatalyst using halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) as the backbone. Magnetic HNTs were functionalized with polydopamine (PDA) and polyethylenimine (PEI), followed by covalent enzyme immobilization via glutaraldehyde crosslinking. The nanobiocatalyst achieved 58.37 % enzyme loading with 63.58 % retained activity. Comprehensive characterization confirmed the effective anchoring of enzyme molecules on the

Intensification of forest management is seen as one important measure to increase carbon sequestration and contribute to balance CO2 emissions and mitigate climate change. Potential measures for forest management intensification include increasing the percentage of the area that is actively reforested after felling, planting at higher densities and with genetically improved material, nitrogen fertilization, and pre-commercial thinning. Here we assessed the mitigation potential of these practices in Norwegian forests from 2018 until the end of the 21st century. As a result, when these managemen

Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) offers a promising biological approach to sequester atmospheric CO2 as stable mineral carbonates, mitigating climate change impacts. This perspective highlights the complexity underpinning prokaryote-driven biomineralization processes, emphasizing the necessity for holistic evaluation beyond simple carbonate formation. Key metabolic pathways such as carbonic anhydrase-mediated CO2 hydration, ureolysis, photosynthesis, and sulfate reduction contribute variably to mineral precipitation and the carbon footprint. Furthermore, calcium carbonate pol

In geologic carbon sequestration, capillary pressure (Pc)-saturation (Sw) relations are needed to predict reservoir processes. Capillarity and its hysteresis have been extensively studied in oil-water and gas-water systems, but few measurements have been reported for supercritical (sc) CO2-water. Here, Pc-Sw relations of scCO2 displacing brine (drainage), and brine rewetting (imbibition) were studied to understand CO2 transport and trapping behavior under reservoir conditions. Hysteretic drainage and imbibition Pc-Sw curves were measured in limestone sands at 45 °C under elevated pressures (8.

Waste stabilisation ponds (WSPs) are globally ubiquitous for low-cost wastewater treatment, yet the functional potential of their microbiomes remains largely underutilised. This study investigates the kinetic and metabolic capabilities of an aerobic microbial community enriched from a WSP, revealing a phenotype defined by "unbalanced growth" that fundamentally restructures remediation stoichiometry. Under pulse-fed conditions, the enriched community exhibited high nutrient removal rates (10, 0.7, and 0.3 mmol gMLSS-1·h-1 for glucose, NH₄⁺-N, and PO₄³⁻-P, respectively) at an operational dissolv
