[What are management practices for speech therapy in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis?].

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis involves deterioration of speech and swallowing. The objectives of rehabilitation are to maintain a comprehensible speech, using exercises on airflow-phonic coordination and breath, lingual and labial movements. Rehabilitation exercises also focus on the different times of swallowing to improve management of the food bolus in the mouth, to learn facilitating techniques and to adopt postures favoring passage of the food bolus. No studies have addressed the question of the effectiveness of rehabilitation in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, in term of quality of life,

Using an unbiased symbolic movement representation to characterize Parkinson's disease states.

Unconstrained human movement can be broken down into a series of stereotyped motifs or 'syllables' in an unsupervised fashion. Sequences of these syllables can be represented by symbols and characterized by a statistical grammar which varies with external situational context and internal neurological state. By first constructing a Markov chain from the transitions between these syllables then calculating the stationary distribution of this chain, we estimate the overall severity of Parkinson's symptoms by capturing the increasingly disorganized transitions between syllables as motor impairment

Passive leg movements and passive cycling do not alter arterial leg blood flow in subjects with spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Subjects with a spinal cord injury (SCI) are at increased risk for cardiovascular disease-related secondary complications, such as pressure ulcers and attenuated wound healing. It has been suggested that passive exercise enhances blood flow via mechanical pump effects or reflex activation. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of passive leg movements and passive cycling on the arterial circulation in subjects with SCI. SUBJECTS: Eight men with motor complete SCI and 8 male control subjects participated. METHODS: Echo Doppler measurements were obtained t

Intra-articular fracture of the mandibular condyle: a case report.

The authors describe a case of intra-articular fracture of the left mandibular condyle, successfully treated by the pumping technique in the upper and lower joint cavities, and show arthroscopic findings in these cavities. The patient was a 15-year-old boy whose maximum mouth opening was 30 mm. Computed tomography revealed a left intra-articular sagittal fracture of the condylar head. Aspiration of the hematoma in the upper and lower joint spaces was performed with ten pumping actions. In the upper and lower joint spaces, arthroscopic examination revealed the disappearance of the hematoma. The
