OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine the surface roughness and flexural strength of a three-dimensional (3D)-printed denture base resin printed with two different build plate orientations and to compare them with a computer-aided design-computer-aided manufacture (CAD-CAM) milled denture base resin.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-six specimens (n = 22/group) were prepared by 3D printing and CAD-CAM technology. The group A and B specimens were 3D-printed bar-shaped denture base specimens printed at 120-degree and 135-degree build orientation, respectively, whereas group C speci

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The flexural strength of zirconia restorations is partially dependent on the sintering process. Changes in sintering protocols as well as hydrothermal aging may affect the flexural strength of zirconia materials.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate how changes in sintering parameters and hydrothermal aging affect the biaxial flexural strength of monolithic zirconia.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Specimens were produced from 2 translucent monolithic zirconia ceramics (Zircon X ST, Upcera YZ HT). After coloring, specimens of both ceramics were distribut

OBJECTIVES: Understand how discontinuous short glass fibers and braided long fibers can be effectively used to reinforce a resin modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) for carious lesion restorations.
METHODS: Two control groups (powder/liquid kit and capsule) were prepared from a light cured RMGIC. Either discontinuous short glass fibers or braided polyethylene fiber ribbons were used as a reinforcement both with and without pre-impregnation with resin. For the former case, the matrix was the powder/liquid kit RMGIC, and for the latter case the matrix was the capsule form. Flexural strength w

PURPOSE: Acrylic dentures fabricated using polymethyl methacrylate are subjected to either intraoral fatigue stress or extraoral impact stress, eventually forming microcracks and fractures. This limitation should be overcome by either modification in the acrylic resin material or in polymerization techniques. This study compares the impact strength and flexural strength of high-impact resin to conventional resin in short- and long-heat polymerization settings.
METHODOLOGY: The in vitro study design adopted a comparison of two groups of acrylic resin specimens, conventional and high-impact res

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of emodin nanoparticles (n-Emo) on the flexural strength of acrylic resin used in orthodontics.
METHODS: A total of 24 acrylic resin discs were prepared according to ISO:20795-1 and divided into four groups (n=6): 0% n-Emo, 0.5% n-Emo, 1% n-Emo, and 2% n-Emo. The flexural strength of each group was measured using the Universal Testing Machine. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey tests were used to analyse the data.

METHODS: 160 polished Y-TZP bars received one of the following surface treatments: airborne particle abrasion (APA) with fluorapatite glass-ceramics (FGC), APA with tribochemical silica-coated alumina (CoJet), laser fused FGC using Nd:YAG Laser (FGC + Laser), while as-sintered polished specimens served as control. Initial flexural strength σfI was measured to half of the specimens, while the rest underw

PURPOSE: This study evaluates and compares the flexural properties of computer-aided design-computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) resin composite and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) blocks used for molar crowns under three storage conditions. Furthermore, the relationship between the inorganic filler content (>70 wt. %) and the flexural properties of the resin composite blocks was clarified.
METHODS: Five commercially available resin composite blocks and one PEEK block were subjected to three storage conditions: dry storage, water immersion for 7 d at 37 °C, and 10,000 thermal cycles between 5 a

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of three printing temperatures on the viscosity; cure depth (Cd) and working-curve parameters (Dp, Ec); degree of conversion (DC) and polymerization kinetics; and post-cured flexural strength (FS), flexural modulus (FM), and the Weibull reliability of flexural strength of a highly filled dental resin composite.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Viscosity (n = 3) was characterized between 20 and 55 °C using a rheometer under steady-shear and shear-rate sweep protocols. Three 3D printing temperatures (25, 37, and 50 °C) were compared regarding photopolyme

MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 80 samples of PEEK and PMMA were prepared and divided into two groups: group A and group B, of 40 each. Both the groups were further divided into subgroups consisting of 20 samples of PMMA and PEEK. The group A specimens were tested for flexural strength by universal testing machine (UTM), and group B samples were subjected to hardness test using Vickers microhardness tester. The values obtained were subjec

This study evaluated the oxide characteristics on a Ag-Sn particle surface modified by acid and heat in order to understand the bonding mechanism. Nine different Ag-Sn particles including standard Sn, SnO and SnO2 were evaluated by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The particles were also used for preparing the composite to test the flexural properties following the ISO 4049. A high correlation between flexural strength of the composites and Sn3d binding energy of their filler particles was found. Different oxide forms (SnO and SnO2) showed different adhesive abilities to bond with 4-MET

Lightweight sandwich structures produced by fused filament fabrication (FFF) require geometric designs that provide adequate mechanical performance without excessive material usage. However, the geometric parameters governing flexural response and structural mass can favour different design configurations, making response-specific parameter selection unsuitable when both requirements must be considered simultaneously. This study experimentally investigates the effects of honeycomb cell size (HCS), honeycomb cell-wall thickness (HCT), top face-sheet thickness (TFS), and bottom face-sheet thickn

This study evaluates the effect of vehicle-bridge coupled vibration on the mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced magnesium phosphate cement (FR-MPC) composites and the bonding properties of repaired systems. By means of compressive and flexural bond strengths, fiber pullout, mercury intrusion porosimeter (MIP) and backscattered electron imaging (BSE) analysis, an enhanced insight was gained into the evolution of FR-MPC performance before and after vibration. Experimental results showed that the compressive strength and flexural strength of FR-MPC was increased when it was subjected to vibr

BACKGROUND: Nowadays, personalized medical devices are frequently used for patients. Due to the manufacturing procedure sterilization is required. How different sterilization methods affect the mechanical behavior of these devices is largely unknown.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) based materials (Vertex Self-Curing, Palacos R+G, and NextDent C&B MFH) were sterilized with different sterilization methods: ethylene oxide, hydrogen peroxide gas plasma, autoclavation, and γ-irradiation. Mechanical properties were determined by testing the flexural strength, flexural
