Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by several species of trematode worms and it is believed that more than 261 million people are affected worldwide. New drug development has become essential because there is a risk of the parasite becoming resistant to Praziquantel, the only drug available for this infection. This study evaluated parasitological, immunological and histological parameters in mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni and treated with an herbal commercial medicine. This drug consists of menthol (30-55%) and menthone (14-32%). A 60 day treatment regimen with the herbal me

Intact and injured cutaneous C-fibers in the rat sural nerve are cold sensitive, heat sensitive, and/or mechanosensitive. Cold-sensitive fibers are either low-threshold type 1 cold sensitive or high-threshold type 2 cold sensitive. The hypothesis was tested, in intact and injured afferent nerve fibers, that low-threshold cold-sensitive afferent nerve fibers are activated by the transient receptor potential melastatin 8 (TRPM8) agonist menthol, whereas high-threshold cold-sensitive C-fibers and cold-insensitive afferent nerve fibers are menthol insensitive. In anesthetized rats, activity was re

We have previously demonstrated that provision of a cold fluid (4 degrees C) during exercise in the heat increases fluid intake and improves exercise capacity when compared to a control fluid (19 degrees C). The present study investigated whether these positive effects could simply be replicated with a cooling agent, menthol. Nine healthy, non-acclimatised males (25 +/- 7 years; .VO(2max): 54 +/- 5 ml kg(-1) min(-1)) cycled to exhaustion at 65% of their peak aerobic power output at 34 degrees C, swilling 25 ml of either an L: (-)-menthol (0.01%) or orange-flavoured placebo solution every 10 mi

OBJECTIVES: In normal and anosmic patients, l-menthol inhalation is responsible for the subjective sensation of increased nasal permeability, related to a stimulation of the internal nasal nerve (branch of trigeminal nerve) endings connected with cold pressor receptors. At present, routine assessment of nasal obstruction does not include the l-menthol test. The aim of this case report was to show the advantages of this test in chronic nasal obstruction evaluation.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The example of a patient with a medical history of facial trauma and anosmia for sequela is reported. This p

BACKGROUND: Menthol is a natural herbal compound. Its isomer l-menthol presents the characteristic peppermint scent and is also responsible for the cooling sensation when applied to nasal mucosal surfaces because of stimulation of trigeminal cold receptors. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of menthol inhalation on end-inspiratory nasal mucosa temperature and nasal patency.
METHODS: Eighteen healthy volunteers with a mean age of 30 years were enrolled in this study. Objective measurements included the septal mucosal temperature within the nasal valve area by using a miniaturized

AIMS: To investigate the effect of menthol on swallowing reflex sensitivity in elderly patients with dysphagia.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The swallowing reflex sensitivity of institutionalized elderly patients was evaluated as a latent time of swallowing reflex (LTSR), induced by the injection of 1 ml solution into the pharynx. LTSR was significantly shortened in a concentration-dependent manner, from 13.8 s [95% confidence interval (CI) 11.1, 16.5] by distilled water to 9.4 s (95% CI 7.1. 11.8) by 10(-2)m menthol.
CONCLUSION: Using menthol with elderly patients with dysphagia may improve the sen

Nitrofurantoin is a nitroaromatic compound used for the treatment of urinary tract infections. Nitrofurantoin activity is regulated by a nitroreduction process. It is first reduced by bacterial nitroreductases to active short-life intermediates, which are further converted to non-toxic molecules, which negatively affect its antibacterial activity. In this study we have shown that resistant strains of Klebsiella sp. inactivate the bactericidal activity of nitrofurantoin. Also we demonstrated a synergistic effect between menthol and nitrofurantoin bactericidal activities against nitrofurantoin s

INTRODUCTION: Flavors are a key regulatory target for tobacco products, but little is known about how flavors influence the appeal of heated tobacco products, such as IQOS, for people who smoke. This study assessed differences in the substitution feasibility of menthol- and regular/tobacco-flavored IQOS for menthol cigarettes.
STUDY DESIGN: This was an unblinded 2-week, parallel-group randomized pilot clinical trial.
SETTING/PARTICIPANTS: Thirty adults who smoked menthol cigarettes in Richmond, VA completed clinical laboratory sessions (Monday and Friday) and reported at-home tobacco consump

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Mentha piperita L. (Lamiaceae), commonly known as peppermint, has a long history in traditional medicine. Its diverse essential oil composition, with menthol as a key bioactive component, supports a range of medicinal applications, including pruritus relief. This suggests a potential role in modulating itch via neuropharmacological mechanisms.
AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to investigate the anti-pruritic mechanisms of menthol by assessing its effects on scratching behavior and spinal microglial activation in a mouse model of pruritus.

INTRODUCTION: Smokers with severe mental illness (SMI) are more likely to start smoking and less likely to quit. Menthol may facilitate smoking progression, dependence, and maintenance by reducing harshness and irritation from smoking and providing a unique sensory experience during use. High rates of menthol use have been reported in smokers with SMI, but information on young adults with SMI has not been reported.
METHODS: This study provides a secondary analysis to assess the impact of menthol use in a pilot trial of brief tobacco interventions. Participants were assessed at baseline and ag

Several temperature-activated transient receptor potential (thermoTRP) ion channels are the molecular receptors of natural compounds that evoke thermal and pain sensations. Menthol, popularly known for its cooling effect, activates TRPM8--a cold-activated thermoTRP ion channel. However, human physiological studies demonstrate a paradoxical role of menthol in modulation of warm sensation, and here, we show that menthol also activates heat-activated TRPV3. We further show that menthol inhibits TRPA1, potentially explaining the use of menthol as an analgesic. Similar to menthol, both camphor and

Several mechanisms have been implicated in underlying the perception of cold, most notably the activation of TRPM8 and TRPA1. We have used ratiometric calcium imaging to reveal a population of neurons in the superior cervical ganglion (SCG) of the mouse that respond to cooling but are insensitive to menthol. Furthermore we show that the expression of the mRNA transcripts encoding the recently identified noxious cold-sensitive channel TRPA1 but not TRPM8 are expressed in the SCG. These data provide evidence for a population of cold-responsive neurons in the SCG whose cold-responsiveness could b

The melting properties of lidocaine and l-menthol binary systems were studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). A eutectic mixture was obtained for the lidocaine:menthol ratio of 30:70 (w:w) with a eutectic point of 26 degrees C. The binary melt systems formed within a range of 30:70-50:50 (w:w) remained as homogeneous oils at ambient temperature. The solubilities of pure lidocaine and lidocaine from the binary melt systems were determined with and without propylene glycol in pH 8.0 phosphate buffer. Lidocaine from the melt systems was less soluble in the buffers due to the partit

Lopinavir is an antiretroviral, antiparasitic agent and recently utilized in treatment of COVID-19. Unfortunately, lopinavir exhibited poor oral bioavailability due to poor dissolution, extensive pre-systemic metabolism, and significant P-glycoprotein intestinal efflux. Accordingly, the aim was to enhance dissolution rate and intestinal absorption of lopinavir. This employed co-processing with menthol which is believed to modify crystalline structures and inhibit intestinal efflux. Lopinavir was mixed with menthol at different molar ratios before ethanol assisted kneading. Formulations were ev

Menthol is a natural compound of plant origin known to produce cool sensation via the activation of the TRPM8 channel. It is also frequently part of topical analgesic drugs available in a pharmacy, although its mechanism of action is still unknown. Compelling evidence indicates that voltage-gated Na(+) channels are critical for experiencing pain sensation. We tested the hypothesis that menthol may block voltage-gated Na(+) channels in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons. By use of a patch clamp, we evaluated the effects of menthol application on tetrodotoxin (TTX)-resistant Nav1.8 and Nav1.9 ch
