Fusarium mycotoxins: effects on reproductive function in domestic animals--a review.

On a global scale, cereal grains and animal feed may be contaminated with trichothecenes, such as deoxynivalenol and T-2 toxin, zearalenone (ZEA), and fumonisins, the major mycotoxins of Fusarium fungi. Of these mycotoxins, ZEA is unequivocally implicated in reproductive disorders of swine and other domestic animals. Experiments in vivo and in vitro indicate that ZEA and its metabolites exert estrogenic effects resulting in functional and morphological alterations in reproductive organs. Recently, the potential of trichothecenes and fumonisins to cause reproductive disorders in domestic animal

Are mycotoxins risk factors for endemic nephropathy and associated urothelial cancers?

Evidence supporting a role of mycotoxin, in particular ochratoxin A (OA) and citrinin, in the etiology of Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN) and associated urinary tract tumours (UTT) is reviewed. Both diseases occur in subjects born and/or living in certain rural areas where home-produced and home-stored stable foods were found to be more frequently contaminated by the OA and citrinin. OA levels in blood and urine from patients with BEN or UTT were higher than in controls. OA and possibly other mycotoxins cause endemic porcine nephropathy, a disease with morphology and clinical course similar t

Stability and Transfer of Fusarium Mycotoxins During Oat Processing: A Review.

Fusarium mycotoxins are frequent natural contaminants of oats, posing significant challenges for food safety and processing. This review critically evaluates the behaviour of major Fusarium mycotoxins, including deoxynivalenol (DON), T-2 and HT-2 toxins, zearalenone (ZEN), fumonisins (FUMs), emerging toxins and selected modified forms, throughout oat processing and in derived products. Evidence consistently shows that the most effective mitigation occurs during early physical processing. Cleaning, sorting, and particularly dehulling can substantially reduce mycotoxin levels, with reductions ex

Mycotoxins as silent modulators of enteric viral susceptibility and vaccine responsiveness.

Enteric viral infections remain a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, particularly in children and intensively raised livestock. Although live oral vaccines have reduced disease burden, vaccine efficacy varies greatly across regions. Factors such as host genetics, microbiota, maternal antibodies, and nutrition have been widely studied, whereas chronic exposure to dietary toxicants has received less attention. Mycotoxins, fungal metabolites contaminating staple crops including maize, wheat, and peanuts, are commonly consumed at low but persistent levels in regions heavily affected

Coexistence and combined toxic effects of principal emerging and common mycotoxins.

Mycotoxins are toxic secondary metabolites produced by fungi and pose a major threat to global food and feed safety. Although common mycotoxins, represented by aflatoxins (AFT), zearalenone (ZEN), ochratoxin A (OTA), and deoxynivalenol (DON), are subject to strict regulation, contamination with emerging mycotoxins, such as beauvericin (BEA), enniatins (ENNs), and moniliformin (MON), has been increasingly reported. These emerging mycotoxins often coexist with common mycotoxins in food and feed, resulting in complex mixed contamination. Such coexistence may give rise to complex combined toxic ef

Mycotoxins Exposure in Cabinda, Angola-A Pilot Biomonitoring Survey of Breastmilk.

Breast milk is considered the ideal form of nutrition for newborns and infants. However, it can carry over contaminants, namely mycotoxins, with biological effects to which this population is particularly vulnerable. Human biomonitoring and surveillance programs are particularly scarce in low-income countries, where food security is a more urgent priority in comparison with food safety. This pilot survey aims to assess exposure of breastfed infants to aflatoxin M1 (AFM1), zearalenone (ZEN), and ochratoxin A (OTA) in Angola, and to evaluate the main socio-demographical and food consumption dete

Mycotoxins in Ethiopia: A Review on Prevalence, Economic and Health Impacts.

Mycotoxigenic fungi and their toxins are a global concern, causing huge economic and health impacts in developing countries such as Ethiopia, where the mycotoxin control system is inadequate. This work aimed to review the occurrences of agriculturally essential fungi such as Aspergillus, Fusarium, and Penicillium and their major mycotoxins in Ethiopian food/feedstuffs. The incidents of crucial toxins, including aflatoxins (B1, B2, G1, G2, M1), fumonisins (B1, B2), zearalenone, deoxynivalenol, and ochratoxin A, were studied. The impacts of chronic aflatoxin exposure on liver cancer risks, syner

Update of survey, regulation and toxic effects of mycotoxins in Europe.

The most frequent toxigenic fungi in Europe are Aspergillus, Penicillium and Fusarium species. They produce aflatoxin B1 transformed into aflatoxin M1 found in the milk, as well as Ochratoxins and Zearalenone, Fumonisin B1, T-2 toxin, HT-2 toxin and deoxynivalenol (vomitoxin), which are of increasing concern in human health. These mycotoxins are under continuous survey in Europe, but the regulatory aspects still need to be set up and/or harmonised at European level. They are found in foodstuffs and are not destroyed by normal industrial processing or cooking since they are heat-stable. Some of

Risk assessment to humans of mycotoxins in animal-derived food products.

This paper addresses approaches for assessing potential human health hazards from the presence of natural toxicants, such as mycotoxins, in animal food products. At high levels in feed these mycotoxins may cause loss or illness of farm animals, through development of animal toxicoses, such as aflatoxicosis. At lower levels in feed these mycotoxins may have no apparent effect on livestock production, but their residues and related substances may move up the food chain. This indirect intake of mycotoxins and related substances from the consumption of animal food products may pose a health hazard

Chemical carcinogenesis: mycotoxins and other chemicals to which humans are exposed.

HCC occurs in a higher incidence in some subsets of human populations residing in specific geographic areas around the world. These include black populations residing south of the Sahara, particularly in South and East Africa; in populations of Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific; in India, China, and in some other circumscribed areas. These epidemiologic observations strongly suggest that environmental factors are involved in the etiology of HCC. Evidence from human and animal data point toward a multicausal etiology, including dietary or environmental contamination with mycotoxin carcinog

Significance of Mycotoxins to Food Safety and Human Health 1, 2.

Mycotoxins are toxic substances produced by molds, which cause disease in animals or man. Acute diseases caused by mycotoxins are called mycotoxicoses. History has recorded several human disease outbreaks and numerous animal poisonings thought to be mycotoxicoses. The outbreak of Turkey X disease in England in 1960 culminated in the discovery of aflatoxins and the realization that low levels of mold metabolites in foods and feed could cause disease in man and animals. This gave great impetus to the study of mycotoxins. Mycotoxin-producing molds are quite ubiquitous and frequently contaminate f

The role of mycotoxins in lipid metabolism and homeostasis: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Mycotoxins are widespread food contaminants that pose a significant global health concern. While their hepatotoxic, nephrotoxic, and carcinogenic effects are well established and characterized, their effects on adipose tissue biology and systemic lipid regulation remain incompletely understood. Given adipose tissue's central role in lipid homeostasis, endocrine regulation, and as a storage reservoir for adipophilic compounds, understanding these effects is critical. METHODS: This systematic review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, and prospectively regis

Deoxynivalenol Mycotoxin Inhibits Rabies Virus Replication In Vitro.

Rabies is a highly fatal disease, and it is vital to find effective ways to manage and control infection. There is a need for new effective antiviral drugs that are particularly effective treatments for rabies. Deoxynivalenol (DON) is known mainly for its toxicity, but at the molecular level, it can inhibit RNA and DNA replication, and there is increasing evidence that different doses of DON have a positive effect on inhibiting virus replication. Based on this, we evaluated the effect of DON on inhibiting the rabies virus in vitro. The inhibitory effect of DON on rabies virus activity was dose
