Effects of Nightshift Work on Blood Metabolites in Female Nurses and Paramedic Staff: A Cross-sectional Study.

Nightshift work disturbs the circadian rhythm, which might contribute to the development of cardio-metabolic disorders. In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to gain insight into perturbations of disease relevant metabolic pathways due to nightshift work. We characterized the metabolic profiles of 237 female nurses and paramedic staff participating in the Klokwerk study using the Nightingale Health platform. We performed analyses on plasma levels of 225 metabolites, including cholesterol, triglycerides, fatty acids, and amino acids. Using both principal component- and univariate-regression,

Shift work migraine disorder: evidence, mechanisms, and implications for diagnosis, prevention, and management.

INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND: Migraine is the leading neurological disorder and the second leading cause of years of life lived with disability (YLDs), affecting roughly 14–15% of the global population. The recognized importance of circadian rhythm disruption, sleep disorders, and occupational stressors as migraine triggers provides justification for studying shift work in connection to migraine. Circadian rhythm disruption has been shown to increase the risk of migraine, with shift workers experiencing a higher prevalence as compared to non-shift workers. The goal of this review is to support view

Relationship between shift work, night work, and headache and migraine risk: A meta-analysis of observational studies.

BACKGROUND: To date, there is insufficient research on whether shift work and night work increase the risk of experiencing headaches and migraines. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the potential association between shift work, night shift work, and headache/migraine. METHODS: We conducted a thorough search of the PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases up until October 2023 to identify relevant studies. Our inclusion criteria focused on observational studies that investigated the association between shift work exposure and headache/migraine outcomes. We extracted adjusted risk e

A qualitative study on the delayed manifestation of night shift-related intrusive memories in non-shift nurses with a history of night shift work.

INTRODUCTION: The adverse effects of night shift work on the physical and mental health of nurses have been widely documented. However, little is known about whether these psychological experiences persist after nurses cease working night shifts or whether some of these experiences subsequently manifest as intrusive memories. OBJECTIVE: To explore the characteristics of the delayed manifestation of night shift-related intrusive memories and the associated experiences among non-shift nurses with a history of night shift work. METHODS: A descriptive qualitative study design was employed using

Better sleep hygiene is associated with better sleep health in mining shift workers in Australia.

Australia's mine sites are largely situated in remote locations and operate around the clock. Many shift workers fly to site, where they work 12-hr shifts and sleep in camp accommodation before they return home for the period rostered off work. Mining shift workers experience poor sleep, yet limited research is available on contributing factors. This study investigated, for the first time, the relationship between the sleep health and sleep hygiene in this population. A survey was disseminated to shift workers in the mining industry, utilising a cross-sectional study design. The Sleep Health I

Greater fragmentation of the daily rhythm of energy intake is associated with better insulin sensitivity in rotating shift workers.

Shift workers are essential to sustaining the modern 24 h society. However, they experience a higher risk of developing metabolic syndrome, a vulnerability thought to arise from recurrent misalignment between their sleep-wake and fasting-eating schedules. This study aimed to investigate the association between the daily rhythms of energy and macronutrient intake, motor activity (MA), and wrist temperature (WT) with anthropometric and biochemical parameters in rotating shift workers (RSW). Thirty male RSW participated in this 10 d cross-sectional study. Anthropometric and biochemical measuremen
