A comprehensive evidence synthesis of anti-erosive dentifrices: An umbrella review of systematic reviews.

OBJECTIVES: Erosive tooth wear (ETW) is a prevalent, irreversible condition; however, despite the availability of numerous anti-erosive dentifrices, heterogeneity among systematic reviews limits clear clinical guidance. This umbrella review synthesizes and critically appraises the highest-level secondary evidence on the effectiveness of anti-erosive dentifrices on enamel and dentin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses was conducted following PRISMA 2020 and Joanna Briggs Institute guidance. Fluoride levels in human parotid saliva following ingestion of fluoride compounds of varying solubility.

Healthy dental students received oral doses of 10.0 mg F daily in the form of compounds of widely varying solubilities. Parotid saliva F concentration and urinary F excretion were highest with NaF, Na2PO3F, and SnF2, lowest with CaF2, and intermediate with AlF3. Solubility of the ingested fluoride compound was a controlling factor in the amount of F excreted in the urine, the peak F concentration reached in parotid saliva, and the duration of a significant elevation in salivary F.

Enamel Fluoride Uptake Determined Using the Microbiopsy Technique and Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry: A Pilot Study.

This study evaluated the suitability of time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) to assess enamel fluoride uptake (EFU) in comparison with the microbiopsy technique. Enamel specimens were exposed to equimolar solutions of fluoride prepared from sodium fluoride (NaF), stannous fluoride (SnF2), or amine fluoride (AmF). EFU was quantified by both techniques on the same specimens. EFU was found to be highest for samples treated with AmF, followed by SnF2 and NaF. Both methods yielded clearly interpretable, highly correlating (r = 0.95) data. ToF-SIMS can be considered a promising

Investigation of the effect of various fluoride compounds and preparations thereof on erosive tissue loss in enamel in vitro.

Metal fluoride preparations are promising in view of protection against dental erosion. The aim of this study was to screen the effect fluoride preparations containing various polyvalent metal cations had on erosion progression under increasingly severe erosive conditions in human enamel in vitro. Specimens were subjected to a cyclic de- and remineralisation procedure. Demineralisation (experiment E1 and E2a: 6 x 2 min/day, experiment E2b: 6 x 5 min/day) was performed with 0.05 M citric acid (pH 2.3). Fluoridation directly followed demineralisation and was reduced stepwise (E1: 6 x 2 min/day,
