BACKGROUND: Noncardiac chest pain is common in patients presenting to emergency departments and is frequently associated with panic disorder. This can represent a major burden for patients and the healthcare system. Little is known about the patient characteristics that increase the risk of noncardiac chest pain. We examined whether cardiac history or Type D personality was associated with panic disorder and/or depression-driven noncardiac chest pain.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Patients presenting with noncardiac chest pain to the emergency department of the University Hospital Maastricht were scre

OBJECTIVE: Recurrent cardiac health care utilization (HCU) is common in patients with nonobstructive coronary artery disease (NOCAD), yet long-term mental health, personality, and health status contributing to repeated emergency department visits (ED) and diagnostic testing remain unclear. This study examined 10-year patterns and predictors of recurrent cardiac HCU in patients with NOCAD.
METHODS: In total 546 patients (52% women) were followed with ED visits or repeat diagnostic tests. Baseline assessments included anxiety, depressive symptoms, type D personality, fatigue, health status, and

BACKGROUND: Patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) often experience typical or atypical symptoms accompanied by depression, anxiety, and low quality of life (QoL). In patients with various diseases, having a Type D personality has been linked to an elevated risk of developing symptoms such as depression and anxiety, as well as reduced QoL.
PURPOSE: The objectives of this study were to examine the influence of Type D personality on GERD symptoms, depression and anxiety, and QoL and to identify the causal relationships among the variables influencing QoL in patients with GERD.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a multifactorial syndrome involving central sensitization and psychosocial factors such as fear of movement and emotional distress. Type D personality (TDP) may exacerbate these factors, but its role in FM remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the associations between TDP and central sensitization, kinesiophobia, disease severity, and psychological distress in patients with FM. METHODS: A total of 120 women (60 with FM, 60 healthy controls) aged 18–60 years were included in this cross-sectional study. Participants were assessed using the Type D Scale

BACKGROUND: Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) shock is a critical event to patients associated with well-being after implantation, although other factors may play an equally important role. We compared the association of shock and the patient's preimplantation personality with health status, using a prospective study design.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Consecutively implanted ICD patients (n=383; 79% men) completed the Type D Scale at baseline and the Short-Form Health Survey 36 (SF-36) at baseline and 3, 6, and 12 months. Of all patients, 23.5% had a Type D personality and 13.8% received

BACKGROUND: Type D is considered as a non pathological personality trait and propensity for mental distress. Its relationship with mental distress has been mainly studied in cardiovascular patients and with respect to depression. The knowledge about the relationship of Type D with mental disorders, psychosocial stressors and health care utilization in the general population is insufficient. Therefore the present study sought to determine the associations of Type D with mental distress, major psychosocial stressors, health status, and health care utilization in the general population.

Biological pathways linking psychosocial stress to coronary pathology remain elusive. Burnout and type D personality (TDP), defined by negative affectivity and social inhibition, are prevalent among physicians and associated with cardiovascular risk. We investigated whether burnout and TDP relate to pericoronary adipose tissue (PCAT) attenuation, a noninvasive imaging marker of fat composition and coronary inflammatory signaling. We further investigated whether sympathetic activation is implicated as an indirect pathway in this association. Systemic inflammation was examined as a downstream co

Type D personality (TDp) is a stable personality type that has been associated with poor quality of life in the general population and in patients with a variety of diseases, such as cancer, cardiac diseases, and dermatological diseases (e.g. psoriasis). To date, the potential association between chronic spontaneous urticaria and TDp has not been studied. The aim of this study is to analyse the impact of TDp on patients with chronic spontaneous urticaria, regarding mood disturbances, quality of life, sexuality, and sleep disturbances. A cross-sectional study including 75 patients with chronic

OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to develop a predictive model of how Type D personality influences health behaviours, social support and symptom severity and assess its generalisability to a range of chronic illnesses.
DESIGN: Participants were classified as either healthy (n = 182) or having a chronic illness (n = 207). Participants completed an online survey measuring Type D and a range of health-related variables. Chronic illness participants were classified as having either a functional somatic syndrome (i.e. chronic fatigue syndrome or fibromyalgia), where the underlying pathological processe

Type D personality, characterized by negative affectivity and social inhibition, has been associated with both the psychophysiology of coronary artery disease (CAD) and depressive disorders. However, few reports have described the impact of coping strategies in these patients. This study aimed to analyze the characteristics of type D personality and the coping strategies adopted by patients with CAD and to explore the factors associated with depressive tendencies during follow-up. Among 84 patients with CAD (median age 66.5 years, nine women) who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (P

BACKGROUND: The Type D personality ("distressed personality") is characterized by a combination of negative affectivity and social inhibition. While this personality style was originally researched in the context of cardiovascular disease, recent studies also show a significant association with chronic pain disorders, especially back pain.
OBJECTIVES: This narrative review examines the current state of knowledge on the relationship between type D personality and back pain. The aim is to analyze possible psychological, behavioral, and biological mechanisms and to derive clinical implications f

Many studies have focused on Type A and Type D personality types in the context of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), but nothing is known about how these personality types combine to create new profiles. The present study aimed to develop a typology of Type A and Type D personality in two groups of patients affected by and at risk for coronary disease. The study involved 711 patients: 51.6% with acute coronary syndrome, 48.4% with essential hypertension (mean age = 56.4 years; SD = 9.7 years; 70.7% men). Cluster analysis was applied. External variables, such as socio-demographic, psychological,

IntroductionPerioperative nurses are exposed to high levels of occupational stress and psychological strain owing to the complexity of surgical care. Burnout in this group not only undermines individual well-being but also compromises patient safety and care quality. This study aimed to examine the relationships between Type D personality, perioperative clinical competence, occupational stress, coping strategies, and burnout, and to identify factors associated with burnout among perioperative nurses.MethodsThis cross-sectional, correlational study was conducted with 199 perioperative nurses re
