INTRODUCTION: This study was aimed to explore the relationship between neural network changes in newly diagnosed children with Benign Childhood Epilepsy with Centrotemporal Spikes (BECTS) and cognitive impairment.
METHODS: Children's cognition was evaluated using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fourth Edition (WISC-IV). Magnetoencephalographic (MEG) data of 18 healthy children and 22 BECTS patients were recorded in order to construct a functional connectivity (FC) network, which was quantified by graph theory (GT).
RESULTS: The mean age of the control group was 7.94 ± 1.89 years

The 144 participants were administered tasks with a demonstrated relationship to reading. Both older students (8 to 10 years old) and younger students (6 to 7 years old) included three groups of poor readers (matched on word reading but differing in the discrepancy from expected reading level) and age-matched average readers. Older poor readers also had a control group of reading-matched younger subjects. The study provided no support for the concept of dyslexia at age 6 to 7 years. Among older participants there was support for the concept of dyslexia as a phonological deficit and of nondiscr

Previous research using the Wechsler scales has identified areas of cognitive weaknesses in children, adolescents, and adults diagnosed with Autism or Asperger's syndrome. The current study evaluates cognitive functioning in adolescents and adults diagnosed with Autism or Asperger's syndrome using the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Fourth Edition (WAIS-IV) and the Social Perception subtest from the Advanced Clinical Solutions. Deficits in social perception, verbal comprehension, and processing speed were found in the Autism sample. Additionally, they exhibited inconsistent performance on au

Researchers continue to debate the constructs measured by commercial ability tests. Factor analytic investigations of these measures have been used to develop and refine widely adopted psychometric theories of intelligence particularly the Cattell-Horn-Carroll (CHC) model. Even so, this linkage may be problematic as many of these investigations examine a particular instrument in isolation and CHC model specification across tests and research teams has not been consistent. To address these concerns, the present study used Monte Carlo resampling to investigate the latent structure of four of the

Several studies have shown deficits in verbal declarative memory function in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Most of these studies have been performed in men with combat-related PTSD compared with healthy subjects; relatively little is known about memory function in women with abuse-related PTSD, or whether these effects are specific to PTSD or are a nonspecific outcome of exposure to early abuse. The purpose of this study was to assess declarative memory function in women with and without a history of early childhood sexual abuse and PTSD. Forty-three women with and without a history of

This study was intended to, meta-analytically, review whether the subtests of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale are useful in differentiating between vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease. We expected the Alzheimer's disease group to outperform the vascular dementia group on those subtests that require executive functions, whereas inferior performance of the Alzheimer's disease patients was expected on memory tests. Two steps in the analysis were undertaken in an attempt to clarify this issue. The first step consisted of including all studies examining Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale

JS is a highly able, well-educated 37 year old man with Asperger syndrome. A recent qualitative paper (Boucher, 2007) described his self-report of verbal and visual memory difficulties. The present paper used the WMS-III to compare the memory profile of JS to that of the adults with HFA in the Williams et al. (2005) WMS-III paper. Results show that JS's self-report of his memory difficulties can by and large be supported, that JS's memory performance is at the lower end of the group examined in the Williams et al. (2005) paper, and that, unlike the group profile in Williams et al. (2005), JS s

A group of adults with Asperger syndrome and an IQ-matched control group were compared in remember versus know recognition memory. Word frequency was also manipulated. Both groups showed superior recognition for low-frequency compared with high-frequency words, and in both groups this word frequency effect occurred in remembering, not in knowing. Nor did overall recognition differ between the two groups. However, recognition in the Asperger group was associated with less remembering, and more knowing, than in the control group. Since remembering reflects autonoetic consciousness, which is the

Blood serotonin (5HT) has been shown to be elevated in 30% of autistic children and 50% of severely mentally retarded children. Ninety-eight normal adult subjects were studied to determine if there was an inverse relationship between whole blood 5HT in normal adults of average and above-average intelligence. There was a trend toward a negative correlation between whole blood 5HT and Vocabulary scores that would not account for hyperserotonemia in autistic or mentally retarded individuals. Female subjects had significantly greater whole blood 5HT than male subjects. There was no difference in w

The memory performance of 60 female patients, scheduled for either local or general anaesthesia and extraction of senile cataract, was investigated. Six subtests of the Wechsler Memory Scale and four items of memory tests according to Luria were performed. One week postoperatively there was a diminution in the performance of the Wechsler Memory Scale and Luria tests. Comparison of the pre- and postoperative diminutions between the local and general anaesthesia groups was statistically significant only in the Luria tests. According to this study general anaesthesia does not affect memory functi

BACKGROUND: 46,XX testicular difference of sex development (46,XX T-DSD) is a rare condition, in which individuals with a typical female chromosomal pattern (46,XX) present with a male phenotype. Although neurocognitive function has previously been reported as normal in males with 46,XX T-DSD, studies indicate potential neurocognitive challenges, including lower educational attainment.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess neurocognitive function in males with 46,XX T-DSD compared to 46,XY male controls using the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, Fourth Edition (WAIS-IV).
METHODS: 47 participants w

OBJECTIVES: Borderline intellectual functioning (BIF) is aclinical entity of polyetiological nature which manifests in heterogeneity of cognitive deficits. The aim of this study was to identify groups of homogenous cognitive profiles within a heterogeneous population of students with BIF.
METHODS: Cognitive profiles of 114 participants with borderline intellectual functioning were assessed based on different patterns of their performance on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children - Revised.
RESULTS: Through a hierarchical cluster analysis we identified four distinct cognitive profiles:

The reading and spelling abilities of 462 school children of mean age 8 years 7 months were examined in relation to their intellectual abilities (as assessed by the WISC-R) by means of cluster analysis. The analysis identified five groups. In one group reading and spelling were considerably poorer than their intellectual abilities. The performance of the five groups was examined on a number of cognitive tests commonly associated with dyslexia. The group identified as having significant discrepancies showed the poorest performance on many of these tests. In addition this group showed other feat

In a group of 28 children with neurofibromatosis type 1 aged between 4 and 16 years, neuroradiological findings were correlated with intelligence as measured by the Wechsler scales. The presence or specific location in the brain of T2 weighted prolonged signals on MRI was not associated with cognitive problems. No other physical characteristics associated with neurofibromatosis type 1 were found to correlate significantly with IQ. At the present these T2 weighted hyper-intense spots should not be used to predict neurofibromatosis type 1 associated cognitive problems.

BACKGROUND: Although treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) contains neurotoxic agents, studies investigating neurocognitive outcomes in children with AML are sparse. We evaluated late cognitive effects in children treated with a high-dose cytarabine based regimen, focusing on general intellectual ability and specific neurocognitive domains.
METHODS: We evaluated 12 survivors of childhood AML who were treated between 2006 and 2016 and completed the Wechsler Intelligence Scales. One-sample t-tests were used to compare full-scale intelligence quotient (FSIQ) and primary index scores to norms

Accurate identification of symptom magnification is essential when determining whether or not obtained test data are valid or interpretable. Apart from using freestanding symptom validity tests, many researchers encourage use of embedded measures of test-related motivation, including ones derived from the Digit Span subtest of the Wechsler scales. Such embedded measures are based on identification of performance patterns that are implausible if the test taker is investing full effort; however, it is unclear whether or not persons with preexisting cognitive difficulties such as specific learnin
