An Exploratory Analysis on the 2D:4D Digit Ratio and Its Relationship with Social Responsiveness in Adults with Prader-Willi Syndrome.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a genetic disorder produced by a lack of expression of paternally derived genes in the 15q11-13 region. Research has generally focused on its genetic and behavioral expression, but only a few studies have examined epigenetic influences. Prenatal testosterone or the maternal testosterone-to-estradiol ratio (MaTtEr) has been suggested to play an important role in the development of the 'social brain' during pregnancy. Some studies propose the 2D:4D digit ratio of the hand as an indirect MaTtEr measure. The relationship between social performance and MaTtEr has been

Non-Contact Hand Movement Analysis for Optimal Configuration of Smart Sensors to Capture Parkinson's Disease Hand Tremor.

Parkinson’s disease affects millions worldwide with a large rise in expected burden over the coming decades. More easily accessible tools and techniques to diagnose and monitor Parkinson’s disease can improve the quality of life of patients. With the advent of new wearable technologies such as smart rings and watches, this is within reach. However, it is unclear what method for these new technologies may provide the best opportunity to capture the patient-specific severity. This study investigates which locations on the hand can be used to capture and monitor maximal movement/tremor severity.

Photoacoustic and high-frequency ultrasound imaging of systemic sclerosis patients.

INTRODUCTION: Systemic sclerosis starts with an early phase characterized by Raynaud's phenomenon, puffy fingers/hands, autoantibodies, and a scleroderma nailfold microscopic pattern. Alterations in the nailfold microscopic pattern are not evident in all early SSc patients. Photoacoustics (PA) and high-frequency ultrasound (HFUS) could fulfill this need. The former can measure oxygen saturation while the latter can measure skin thickening. We hypothesize that photoacoustics and high-frequency ultrasound can distinguish (early) SSc patients from individuals with primary Raynaud's phenomenon (PR

Randomized Controlled Trial of Compression Interventions for Managing Hand Burn Edema, as Measured by Bioimpedance Spectroscopy.

Compression, a common treatment of choice for the management of edema, is one intervention that is applied with little objective understanding of the optimal parameters of application or efficacy in acute burn wounds. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of different methods of compression for the management of hand edema following burn injury. The primary hypothesis tested was that in acute hand burn injury, the application of cohesive bandage will reduce edema faster than a generic compression glove. It is a randomized controlled study of 100 patients presenting with hand

The anatomy and function of a bilateral accessory flexor digitorum superficialis muscle: A case report and review of literature.

Anatomical variations of the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) include variations of the muscle belly and/or tendon. We present a case of a bilateral accessory FDS muscle and tendon. Dissection was performed in a male specimen (56 years), where an unusual variation was found: a bilateral accessory FDS muscle and tendon. The accessory FDS muscle belly originated at the medial epicondyle, between the tendinous portions of the FDS and flexor carpi radialis, with average dimensions of 70mm in length and 23mm in width. The accessory FDS muscle belly was innervated by the median nerve. After deve

Applicability of shear wave elastography for the evaluation of skin strain in systemic sclerosis.

The assessment of skin fibrosis is vital for the diagnosis and monitoring of treatment in the systemic sclerosis (SSc)-a severe autoimmune disease. The elastography is a technique of skin fibrosis assessment through the evaluation of skin strain. We compared the efficacy of the shear wave elastography (SWE) and commonly used modified Rodnan skin score (RSS) in skin fibrosis assessment in SSc. The study included 40 SSc patients and 28 healthy individuals, with the exclusion of individuals with other skin/autoimmune diseases. Skin thickness using RSS and skin strain using SWE were assessed in th

Skin manifestations after bariatric surgery.

BACKGROUND: Skin signs observed in morbid obesity may change as the weight reduces, especially post-bariatric surgery (BaS). Data concerning the skin findings exclusively in post-BaS patients remain limited. METHODS: Seventy post-BaS patients were examined for cutaneous abnormalities. The patients were divided into those with successful weight loss (% excessive body weight loss (EBWL) of at least 50%) and a non-successful group (%EBWL < 50%). RESULTS: Forty-six patients with successful weight loss demonstrated a significantly lower prevalence of acanthosis nigricans on the neck, axillae and

Physiolysis for correction of clinodactyly with delta phalanx: Early improvement.

Congenital clinodactyly known as "delta phalanx" is a congenital finger deviation caused by a middle phalanx abnormality. Progressive realignment can be achieved with normal growth through physiolysis according to Vickers. The purpose of this investigation was to identify the rate of correction in congenital clinodactyly following epiphyseal bar resection. We studied retrospectively 24 fingers in 14 patients aged from 14 months to 11 years old (y/o), operated on by two surgeons performing epiphyseal bar resection using a modified Vickers' method. Angle measurements were compared pre-operatively

Cheiro-Oral syndrome caused by thalamus hemorrhage: A case report.

RATIONALE: Cheiro-Oral syndrome (COS) is a pure sensory deficit confined to the perioral area and ipsilateral distal fingers or hand. Owing to relatively minor clinical findings and various presentations in different cases, the insidious and severe illness it implies may be overlooked at acute settings. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 70-year-old man with history of hypertension and type II diabetes mellitus under regular medication control came to our emergency department with chief complaint of sudden onset of right perioral region and right upper limb numbness. Two new species of the genus Lepidophthalmus (Decapoda, Axiidea, Callianassidae) from coastal Pacific waters of Central America.

Two new species of intertidal ghost shrimp are described from coastal Central American habitats of the eastern Pacific Ocean, bringing the total known membership of the genus to 18 species. Lepidophthalmus natesi sp. nov. from Colombia and Nicaragua shares with Lepidophthalmus panamensis sp. nov. from Colombia and Panama the lack of extensive ventral pleomere armor, especially in lacking a median ventral sclerite on the second pleomere. The absence of this plate is also a character of the eastern Pacific species L. rafai Felder & Manning, 1998, but the two new species differ from it in telson

Comparison of distal interphalangeal fusion with and without joint preparation in cases of stage IV chondropathy.

UNLABELLED: The main complications in distal interphalangeal (DIP) fusion are non-union and hardware-related symptoms. The primary aim of this study was to show that joint preparation for DIP fusion is not necessary in cases of stage IV chondropathy. The secondary aim was to show that use of buried compression screws decreases the complication rate. This continuous retrospective study included two groups of DIP percutaneous arthrodesis procedures carried out with 1.8mm break-away compression screws: group 1 underwent joint preparation through a dorsal approach and group 2 underwent a percutane

Regional anesthesia does not consistently block ischemic pain: two further cases and a review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: Ischemic pain is complex and poorly understood. There is controversy regarding whether or not regional anesthetic techniques block ischemic pain. We present two further cases where regional anesthesia did not block ischemic pain despite adequate motor and sensory block. CASE REPORT 1: A 29-year-old healthy male underwent elective right lateral ankle ligament reconstruction for ankle instability with single-injection femoral and sciatic nerve blocks as the sole anesthetic. He reported no pain during or after surgery; approximately 90 min after the cast dressing was applied, he compl

Painful nodules and cords in Dupuytren disease.

PURPOSE: The etiology of Dupuytren disease is unclear. Pain is seldom described in the literature. Patients are more often disturbed by impaired extension of the fingers. We recently treated a series of patients who had had painful nodules for more than 1 year, and we therefore decided to investigate them for a possible anatomical correlate. METHODS: Biopsies were taken during surgery from patients with Dupuytren disease and stained to enable detection of neuronal tissue. RESULTS: We treated 17 fingers in 10 patients. Intraoperatively, 10 showed tiny nerve branches passing into or crossing t
