Ethosomal drug delivery systems for skin cancer: Mechanistic insights, formulation strategies, and translational challenges.

INTRODUCTION: Skin cancer is one of the most prevalent malignancies worldwide, with incidence increasing by approximately 2-3% annually due to prolonged ultraviolet radiation exposure, genetic predisposition, and an ageing population. Conventional treatments, including oral, injectable, and topical therapies, are often limited by poor skin permeability, first-pass metabolism, systemic toxicity, and inadequate tumor targeting. METHODS: This review systematically examines ethosomal drug delivery systems, focusing on their composition, mechanism of skin permeation, and formulation strategies. Ke

Emerging Therapies for Genetic Deafness: The Rise of Precision Gene Editing.

Hearing loss is a prevalent sensory disorder with profound social and health impacts. Although hearing aids and cochlear implants can significantly restore auditory perception, they do not address the underlying genetic causes. Inherited forms of hearing loss, often monogenic, are ideal candidates for gene therapy, particularly since over 150 genes have been linked to deafness. Advances in vector engineering and genome editing technologies now enable precise targeting of auditory cells within the inner ear. Technologies such as Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats-Cas syst

Polysaccharide hydrogel integrated microbial consortia for reducing relative abundance of antibiotic resistance genes in soil: physical adsorption and biological regulation.

The occurrence of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in soil ecosystems poses a significant risk to human health. However, the techniques for removing ARGs in soil remain limited. Here we developed a natural polysaccharide hydrogel (low-acyl gellan gum/chitosan, GGC) to immobilize the microbial consortia for mitigating the propagation of ARGs. The introduction of microbial consortia in GGC demonstrated high degradation efficiencies of antibiotics, which attributed to the activation of the metabolic pathway network through microbial consortia, further reducing selective pressure

Explainable AI framework for skin lesion imaging based cancer detection.

The classification of skin cancer remains a challenging task because of the subtle visual patterns of benign and malignant lesions. In this work we propose an interpretable ensemble learning framework for dermoscopic skin lesion classification by combining Random Forest, XGBoost and LightGBM using Max-Voting. The proposed system demonstrates good predictive performance with clinical interpretability, achieving 95.94% accuracy on the HAM10000 dataset. To increase transparency we use explainable AI techniques to visualise the image regions and features that are most important for the model's dec

Imaging and Molecular Biomarkers of PFAS-Related Vascular Aging: A Narrative Review.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent environmental contaminants increasingly associated with cardiovascular disease. Identifying early manifestations of vascular aging before the onset of overt disease is essential for improving cardiovascular risk stratification and prevention. Emerging evidence suggests that PFAS exposure contributes to early vascular and atherosclerotic alterations detectable by imaging techniques, including increased carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), arterial stiffness, and endothelial dysfunction. In contrast, evidence for associations with coron

Insights into uranium enrichment of indigenous electroactive Shewanella putrefaciens.

Bioremediation of uranium-contaminated environments using native bacteria shows great promise. While Shewanella putrefaciens (S. putrefaciens) is a known uranium reducing bacterium, the mechanisms and adaptability of indigenous strains from uranium mine tailings remain unexplored. This study isolated a dominant indigenous strain of S. putrefaciens and employed a combined genomic and spectroscopic approach to elucidate its unique uranium fixation mechanism. Microbial diversity analysis confirmed the dominance of Shewanella in the oligotrophic and radioactive tailings. Whole-genome sequencing re

First Taxonomically Curated DNA Barcode Reference Library for Polish Myriapods Fills an Important Knowledge Gap for Soil Invertebrates in Central Europe, Part I: Millipedes (Myriapoda: Diplopoda).

DNA barcoding is a highly effective tool for species identification, complementing taxonomic and phylogenetic studies while also playing a key role in biomonitoring and uncovering cryptic diversity. Techniques such as DNA barcoding, metabarcoding and environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis are widely applied in biodiversity conservation, tracking invasive species and studying trophic interactions. To carry out this type of research effectively, a robust DNA barcode library is essential, built upon high-quality genetic sequences and accurate taxonomic identification. Here, we present the results of a

[State of the art and innovations in breast cancer prevention and screening strategies].

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, and its incidence is increasing, particularly in France, due to changes in lifestyle and exposure over the past 40 years. Despite organized screening programs and advances in treatment, breast cancer mortality is declining only slowly. The costs of care are constantly rising. More efficient primary and secondary prevention is therefore a major challenge for the coming years. Innovations already available or in advanced development include new imaging techniques or indications (tomosynthesis, angiomammography, breast MRI for women with dense

Hepatic Candidiasis in a Non-neutropenic Patient.

Hepatic candidiasis is an uncommon but serious manifestation of invasive candidiasis (IC), most often associated with prolonged neutropenia in patients with hematological malignancies or in those who have undergone abdominal surgery. Diagnosis is challenging because of the low sensitivity of cultures, the limitations of serologic assays, and the frequent impracticality of tissue biopsy. Imaging, particularly CT and [18F]fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose positron emission tomography (18FDG-PET), plays a central role in identifying characteristic hepatosplenic lesions and in monitoring response to therap

Apert Syndrome: Oral, Maxillofacial and Dental Management-A Narrative Clinical Review.

Apert syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized by premature fusion of the cranial sutures, syndactyly of the extremities, and distinct craniofacial deformities. The condition results from mutations in the FGFR2 gene, which disrupt normal craniofacial growth and lead to complex functional and morphological abnormalities. Patients with Apert syndrome commonly present with stomatognathic abnormalities, which significantly affect oral function and facial development. The management of Apert syndrome requires a multidisciplinary therapeutic approach. Surgical treatment strategies are typic

Successful Endoscope-Assisted Transcervical Insemination (TCI) in Dogs Using Sperm Recovered from Epididymides Stored at 5 °C for 24 h After Castration Prior to Semen Collection and Cryopreservation.

The recovery and cryopreservation of epididymal spermatozoa enable genetic preservation in male dogs that die unexpectedly or require castration; however, sperm collection is typically performed immediately after surgery, and artificial insemination is often surgical. This study aimed to evaluate whether epididymides stored at 4-5 °C for 24 h prior to sperm recovery retain fertilizing capacity after cryopreservation and whether pregnancy can be achieved using endoscopically guided transcervical intrauterine insemination. Testes and epididymides from an eight-month-old German Shepherd dog were

Pre-treated mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes: A new perspective for accelerating spinal cord injury repair.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating event for the central nervous system (CNS), often resulting in the loss of sensory and motor functions. It profoundly affects both the physiological and psychological well-being of patients, reducing their quality of life while also imposing significant economic pressure on families and the healthcare system. Due to the complex pathophysiology of SCI, effective treatments for promoting recovery remain scarce. Mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes (MSC-Exos) offer advantages such as low immunogenicity, good biocompatibility, and the ability to cross th

NAD+-Boosters Improve Mitochondria Quality Control In Parkinson's Disease Models Via Mitochondrial UPR.

Serving as a pivotal hub for cellular metabolism and intracellular signaling, the mitochondrion has emerged as a crucial organelle whose dysfunction is linked to many human diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders, particularly Parkinson's disease (PD). However, whether mitochondrial quality control (MQC) can be targeted for therapeutic interventions remains uncertain. This study uses clinical samples, molecular biology techniques, pharmacological interventions, and genetic approaches to investigate the significance of NAD+ levels in cross-species models of PD. These results reveal that

GenCPM: a toolbox for generalized connectome-based predictive modeling.

Understanding brain-behavior relationships and predicting cognitive and clinical outcomes from neuromarkers are central tasks in neuroscience. Connectome-based Predictive Modeling (CPM) has been widely adopted to predict behavioral traits from brain connectivity data; however, existing implementations are largely restricted to continuous outcomes, often overlook essential non-imaging covariates, and are difficult to apply in clinical or disease cohort settings. To address these limitations, we present GenCPM, a generalized CPM framework implemented in open-source R software. GenCPM extends tra

Atrial cardiomyopathy: new pathophysiological and clinical aspects.

Atrial cardiomyopathy (ACM) is increasingly recognized as a key contributor to the development and perpetuation of atrial fibrillation (AF), a prevalent cardiac arrhythmia with significant clinical implications. ACM involves complex structural, electrical, and functional remodeling of the atrial myocardium, driven by various pathological conditions such as hypertension, heart failure, and obesity. Key mechanisms include atrial fibrosis, inflammation, and oxidative stress, which collectively contribute to the pro-arrhythmic and pro-thrombotic state associated with AF. Recent studies highlight t
