In order to increase the nutrients and humic acid (HA) contents of corn straw (CS) derived organic fertilizer and recover resources from biogas slurry (BS) simultaneously, the co-composting of CS and BS was carried out with the addition of biochar and microbial agents including lignocellulose degrading and ammonia assimilating bacteria. The results showed that 1 kg straw could treat 2.5 L BS by recovering nutrients and bio-heat introduced evaporation. The bioaugmentation strengthened both the polyphenol and Maillard humification pathways by promoting the polycondensation of precursors (reducin

Municipal sewage especially the produced sewage sludge is a significant source releasing mercury (Hg) to the environment. However, the Hg speciation especially methylmercury (MeHg) transformation in sewage sludge treatment process remains poorly understood. This study investigated the transformation of Hg speciation especially MeHg in sludge composting. The distribution of Hg transformation related gene pairs hgcAB and merAB, and their putative microbial hosts were comprehensively analyzed. Both Hg (from 3.16±0.22 mg/kg to 3.20±0.19 mg/kg) and MeHg content (from 4.77±0.64 ng/g to 4.36±0.37 ng/

Tetracyclines (TCs) residues in livestock manure are the main origin of environmental tetracyclines contamination and have serious environmental and health risks. This work aimed to examine the effect of temperature on the degradation patterns of TCs antibiotics. Tetracycline (TC), doxycycline (DC), oxytetracycline (OTC) and chlortetracycline (CTC) were all degraded much more quickly in sterilized double distilled H2O (ddH2O) at higher temperatures and lost antibacterial activity after being incubated at 70 °C for 72 h. High pH value enhanced the degradation process of TCs solutions. Degradati

Although, compost is the store house of different plant nutrients, there is a concern for low amount of major nutrients especially nitrogen content in prepared compost. The present study deals with preparation of compost by using agricultural wastes with struvite (MgNH4PO4·6H2O) along with termite mound. Among four composting mixtures, 50kg termite mound and 2.5kg struvite with crop residues (stover of ground nut: 361.65kg; soybean: 354.59kg; potato: 357.67kg and mustard: 373.19kg) and cow dung (84.90kg) formed a good quality compost within 70days of composting having nitrogen, phosphorus and

Additives are widely used to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions during manure composting, but whether additive combinations improve mitigation remains unclear. Here, we compared zeolite, ferrous sulfate, superphosphate, and their combinations in cattle manure composting. Superphosphate alone showed the strongest overall mitigation, reducing cumulative CH4 and N2O emissions by 87% and 38%, respectively, relative to the control. The best-performing combined treatment (FL) reduced cumulative CH4 and N2O emissions by 52% and 48%, respectively, indicating that FL performed better for N2O, wher

Antibiotic residue in husbandry waste has become a serious concern. In this study, contaminated chicken manure composting was conducted to reveal the bioaugmentation effect on tetracyclines residue and antibiotics resistance genes (ARGs). The bioaugmented composting removed most of the antibiotics in 7 days. Under bioaugmentation, 96.88 % of tetracycline and 92.31 % of oxytetracycline were removed, 6.32 % and 20.93 % higher than the control (P < 0.05). The high-temperature period was the most effective phase for eliminating antibiotics. The treatment showed a long high-temperature period (7 da

Sustainable manure management technologies are needed, and combining anaerobic digestion (AD) for energy generation and aerobic composting (AC) to stabilize digestate and remove emerging contaminants (ECs), including veterinary pharmaceuticals and steroid hormones, is promising. This study identified post-AD, AC operating conditions that maximized degradation of study ECs, expected to be present in cattle manure digested using treated municipal wastewater as the water source. Study ECs included sulfamethoxazole (SMX), chlortetracycline (CTC), oxytetracycline (OTC), estrone (E1), and naproxen (

The purposes of this study were to investigate the behavior of three tetracyclines including chlortetracycline (CTC), oxytetracycline (OTC) and tetracycline (TC) and their degradation products in a pilot scale swine manure composting, and also to study the degradation kinetics of CTC, OTC and TC. During the pilot scale composting, CTC, OTC and TC were degraded by 74%, 92% and 70%, respectively. Several degradation products were found like 4-epitetracycline (ETC), 4-epioxytetracycline (EOTC), 4-epichlortetracycline (ECTC), demeclocycline (DMCTC) and anhydrotetracycline (ATC). Both the simple an

Paper sludges were traditionally landfilled or burned. Over the years, the use of paper sludges on soils has increased, as well as the concerns about their environmental effects. Therefore, the chemical characterization of paper sludges and their young (immature) compost needed to be investigated, and over 150 inorganic and organic chemicals were analyzed in de-inking paper sludge (DPS). In general, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium contents were low but variable in raw DPS and its young compost. The contents of arsenic, boron, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, manganese, mercury, molybdenum, nickel

Cellulosic textiles, constituting over 30% of global fibre production, are biodegradable but remain challenging to recycle at scale owing to their high crystallinity, chemical finishes, and heterogeneous waste streams. Although microorganisms drive cellulose turnover in natural ecosystems, their potential for transforming anthropogenic cellulosic waste remains largely unexplored. In this study, composting was evaluated both as a sustainable approach to textile biodegradation and a reservoir of cellulolytic microorganisms with biotechnological potential. Biodegradation assays of cotton and lyoc

Antibiotic resistance is a major global health threat. Agricultural use of antibiotics is considered to be a main contributor to the issue, influencing both animals and humans as defined by the One Health approach. The purpose of the present study was to determine the abundance of antibiotic-resistant bacterial populations and the overall bacterial diversity of cattle farm soils that have been treated with animal manure compost. Soil and manure samples were collected from different sites at Tullimba farm, NSW. Cultures were grown from these samples in the presence of 11 commonly used antibioti

Microbial compost plays a crucial role in improving soil health, soil fertility, and plant biomass. These biofertilizers, based on microorganisms, offer numerous benefits such as enhanced nutrient acquisition (N, P, and K), production of hydrogen cyanide (HCN), and control of pathogens through induced systematic resistance. Additionally, they promote the production of phytohormones, siderophore, vitamins, protective enzymes, and antibiotics, further contributing to soil sustainability and optimal agricultural productivity. The escalating generation of organic waste from farm operations poses s

Content of heavy metals, including mercury, determines the method of management and disposal of sewage sludge. Excessive concentration of mercury in composts used as organic fertilizer may lead to accumulation of this element in soil and plant material. Fractionation of mercury in sewage sludge and composts provides a better understanding of the extent of mobility and bioavailability of the different mercury species and helps in more informed decision making on the application of sludge for agricultural purposes. The experimental setup comprises the composing process of the sewage sludge conta

BACKGROUND: The incidence of Legionnaires' disease (LD) in southern Switzerland is three times higher than in northern Switzerland. Climatic and geographic factors may be potential causes for this difference. We studied the prevalence of Legionella and free-living amoebae (FLA) in compost and bioaerosol in two Swiss regions to understand the role of climate and geography in the transmission of LD. We also tried to investigate whether or not compost storage duration would influence the composition of Legionella and FLA communities.
RESULTS: A larger proportion of compost heaps in facilities fro

This study sets up microcosms using two types of compost samples, bagasse/manure compost, and yard-trimming compost with different maturity, to evaluate their capacity for reductive dechlorination of tetrachloroethene (PCE). The experimental results show that less matured compost samples could reduce 300 μM of PCE to ethene within 180 days of incubation. Decreasing initial PCE concentration and removing dissolved oxygen from the solution could enhance reducing efficiency. The solution remains near neutral pH throughout the experiment, and ethene emerged when the redox potential dropped to belo

A series of experiments were performed to study the effects of magnesium (Mg) and phosphate (PO(4)) addition on the decomposition of organic matter and struvite formation during the composting of swine manure. In these experiments, different amounts of magnesium chloride (MgCl(2)) with or without PO(4) salts were added to the samples, and the optimum molar ratio of Mg and PO(4) to the total nitrogen (TN) in swine manure was studied. The temperature profiles revealed that no organic matter was decomposed when 0.1M or more Mg and PO(4) salts were added and that when 0.05 M ratio of Mg and PO(4)

Plastic pollution in freshwater ecosystems is an increasing environmental concern, prompting the search for biodegradable polymer (BP) alternatives. However, their degradation in natural aquatic environments remains poorly investigated and understood. This four-month in situ study compared the degradation in a lentic freshwater ecosystem of two compostable items, Mater-Bi® shopping bag and disposable dish, with their respective pure polymer matrices, poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) and polylactic acid (PLA). Additionally, biodegradable poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate

Not all produced compost meets established quality standards, often resulting in environmental challenges. This study investigated the potential of using mature compost as a feedstock for biochar production, with a focus on evaluating the gas adsorption properties of the resulting biochars. Mature compost was utilized as a substrate, and the pyrolysis process involved heating samples within a temperature range of 400-650 °C, at 50 °C intervals, with heating rates of 10 °C·min-1, 15 °C·min-1, or 20 °C·min-1 for a duration of 60 min. The resulting biochars were tested for their adsorption perfor

Antibiotics are of environmental concern. Their concentrations in the aquatic environment are frequently studied, while their occurrence in human excreta-derived fertilizers is less investigated. Therefore, levels of antibiotics, preservatives with antimicrobial properties, and various other micropollutants were determined in sewage sludge and in human fecal compost. Digested sludge of 29 Swiss wastewater treatment plants was analyzed, representing about 2.6 Mio people (30% of the Swiss population). This was compared with residues found in compost with dry toilet content after thermophilic com

Slow release of nitrate by charred organic matter used as a soil amendment (i.e. biochar) was recently suggested as potential mechanism of nutrient delivery to plants which may explain some agronomic benefits of biochar. So far, isolated soil-aged and composted biochar particles were shown to release considerable amounts of nitrate only in extended (>1 h) extractions ("slow release"). In this study, we quantified nitrate and ammonium release by biochar-amended soil and compost during up to 167 h of repeated extractions in up to six consecutive steps to determine the effect of biochar on the ov
