Fatal copper deficiency from excessive use of zinc-based denture adhesive.

INTRODUCTION: Human stores of zinc and copper exist in dynamic equilibrium; an increase in one causes a fall in the other, and clinical consequences of toxicity or deficiency of one or the other may result. Some of the most widely used denture adhesives are zinc based, creating a potential for zinc toxicity and corresponding copper deficiency. A case of denture adhesive-based zinc toxicity with corresponding copper deficiency leading to fatal ascending sensorimotor polyneuropathy was identified. The objectives of this study were to illustrate the evolution, and disparate response to treatment,

In vitro antiseptic properties of an ammonium compound combined with denture base acrylic resin.

BACKGROUND: Denture base acrylic resin is easily colonised by oral endogenous bacteria and Candida spp., and eventually by extra-oral species such as Staphylococcus spp., Pseudomonadaceae or members of Enterobacteriaceae. This microbial reservoir can be responsive for denture related stomatitis and aspiration pneumonia, a life-threatening infection especially in geriatric patients. However, the oral and denture hygiene of dependent elderly individuals is extremely poor. OBJECTIVE: This in vitro study aimed to determine the per cent of a quaternary ammonium compound heat-polymerised in acrylic

Denture-Soaking Solution Containing Piper betle Extract-Loaded Polymeric Micelles; Inhibition of Candida albicans, Clinical Study, and Effects on Denture Base Resin.

Candida albicans is a common overgrowth in people wearing dentures. Long-term use of antifungal chemicals carries a risk of toxic side effects. This study focused on the edible Piper betle extract because of its safety. The broth dilution method was applied for antifungal determination of the ethyl acetate fractionated extract (fEA) and fEA-loaded polymeric micelles (PMF). The PMF was prepared by thin-film hydration using poloxamer 407 as a polymer base. The results found that the weight ratio of fEA to polymer is the main factor to obtain PMF system as a clear solution, nanoparticle sizes, na

Inhibitory effect of coated mannan against the adhesion of Candida biofilms to denture base resin.

The adherence of Candida on dentures is related to diseases such as denture stomatitis and aspiration pneumonia. Mannan is a major component of the Candida cell surface, and contributes to the cell adherence. A previous report indicated that the adherence of C. albicans to culture dishes was inhibited by the coating them with mannan. The purpose of this study was to examine the adhesion inhibitory effect of mannan coating on acrylic denture surfaces against C. albicans and C. glabrata. The amount of Candida attached on the acrylic surfaces coated with mannan was calibrated by culture methods.
