Osteomalacia caused by tumors in facies cranii mimicking rheumatoid arthritis.

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is an extremely rare metabolic bone disease and the occult offending tumor arising in facies cranii is even more uncommon. In this report, we described 2 middle-aged females with TIO caused by the tumor in facies cranii, which had ever been misdiagnosed as rheumatoid arthritis. Case 1 was present with diffuse bone pain and muscle weakness for 4 years, as well as esotropia in the right eye for 1 month. Case 2 was present with progressive bone pain in low back and hip for 2 years. Biochemical studies both showed persistent hypophosphatemia and urinary over wastin

Asymmetric crying facies associated with congenital hypoparathyroidism and 22q11 deletion.

Asymmetric crying facies is caused by congenital hypoplasia or agenesis of the depressor anguli oris muscle. Associations of this facial defect with major congenital anomalies have been reported, most commonly in the cardiovascular system and less frequently involving the genitourinary, musculoskeletal, cervicofacial, respiratory, and rarely, the endocrine system. CATCH 22 is a medical acronym for cardiac defects, abnormal facies, thymic hypoplasia, cleft palate and hypocalcemia and a variable deletion on chromosome 22q11. The deletion within chromosme region of 22q11 may occur in patients wit

Asymmetric crying facies associated with hemihypertrophy: report of one case.

An infant whose face appears symmetrical at rest yet whose mouth is pulled downward to one side when crying is said to have an "asymmetric crying facies". The cause of the facial asymmetry in this disorder is congenital absence or hypoplasia of the depressor anguli oris muscle at the corner of the mouth. Associations of this minor facial defect with major congenital anomalies have been reported, most commonly in the cardiovascular system and less frequently involving the genitourinary, musculoskeletal, cervicofacial, respiratory, and, rarely, the central nervous system. In this article, a 40-d

Collodion baby associated with asymmetric crying facies: a case report.

More than a quarter of Sweden's population are of foreign background and as signs and prevalence of skin diseases vary across different skin types, lack of knowledge on this issue can potentially threaten health equity. In addition to being melanin rich, structural and functional characteristics in the skin of black individuals, such as hyperreactive melanocytes and fibroblasts, explain some of the common normal variations and the risk for dyschromia, hypertrophic scarring and keloids. A high content of melanin masks erythema, which can complicate assessment for the unexperienced, as can the f

Asymmetric crying facies and congenital hypothyroidism: report of two patients.

A congenital asymmetric crying facies (ACT) is caused by congenital hypoplasia or agenesis of the depressor anguli oris muscle. Associations of this facial defect with major congenital anomalies have been reported, most commonly in the cardiovascular system and less frequently involving the genitourinary, musculoskeletal, cervicofacial, respiratory, and rarely, the endocrine system. It is also well known that congenital hypothyroidism may be associated with other congenital malformations, especially with cardiac defects. Congenital diaphragmatic hernia, coarse facies, and acral hypoplasia: Fryns syndrome.

We describe five patients with Fryns syndrome. Four presented with diaphragmatic hernia and died in the neonatal period. One did not have diaphragmatic involvement and survived but is severely mentally retarded. All patients had "coarse" faces, microretrognathia, macrostomia, and distal digital hypoplasia. In addition to previously reported traits, our patients had clinical manifestations that have not previously been described, including omphalocele, broad clavicles, Hirschsprung "disease," and anal anomalies. The condition was detected antenatally in three of the cases. The patients include

Night blindness, characteristic facies, and skeletal abnormalities in two brothers.

Two brothers are described with a similar physical appearance characterised by minor periorbital anomalies, malar flatness, a maxillary overbite, retrognathia, sloping shoulders, joint hyperextensibility, and minor radiological anomalies. In addition, they had a slowly progressing night blindness, myopia, and extinguished electroretinograms. The mother had mild expression of some of the physical anomalies and a decreased electroretinogram response to red light. We have been unable to find any report of similarly affected children. The possible modes of inheritance are discussed.

Neonatal asymmetric crying facies: a new look at an old problem.

Neonatal asymmetric crying facies, described 75 years ago, is a clinical phenotype resembling unilateral partial peripheral facial nerve paralysis, with an incidence of approximately 1 per 160 live births. The cause is either facial nerve compression or faulty facial muscle and/or nerve development. Spontaneous resolution is expected with the former, but not necessarily with the latter etiology. Approximately 10% of the developmental cases have associated major malformations. Mandibular asymmetry and maxillary-mandibular asynclitism (non-parallelism of the gums) are frequently overlooked visua

A new recessive syndrome of unusual facies and multiple structural abnormalities.

Two sibs with a similar pattern of dysmorphic facial features and multiple structural abnormalities are reported. Both had a normal karyotype. The parents are first cousins and neither shows any stigmata of the disorder. In view of the consanguinity and pattern of malformations, autosomal recessive inheritance seems likely.

Hyperactivity, unexplained speech delay, and coarse facies--is it Sanfilippo syndrome?

Mucopolysaccharidosis-IIIB or Sanfilippo-B syndrome is caused by deficiency of lysosomal α-N-acetylglucosaminidase that leads to accumulation of heparan-sulphate and degeneration of central nervous system with progressive dementia, hyperactivity, and aggressive behavior. Mucopolysaccharidosis-III remains underdiagnosed as a cause of developmental delay and hyperactivity both in adults and children because in contrast to other mucopolysaccharidoses, they have little somatic disease, coarse facial features, hepatosplenomegaly or skeletal changes, and a high incidence of false-negative results on

A 60-year-old lady with leonine facies: a rare diagnosis.

Systemic mastocytosis is a rare clonal disorder characterized by mast cell infiltration of one or more organs, with or without skin involvement. Leonine facies is a rare presentation and corresponds to the morphologic manifestation of diffuse dermal infiltration of the face as a result of long standing disease. Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy findings in a 60-year-old woman, who had extensive cutaneous infiltration due to systemic mastocytosis, resulting in 'leonine facies,' are described, and causes of leonine facies are discussed.

[The femoral hypoplasia syndrome and unusual facies in an infant of a diabetic mother].

One-month-old female infant of diabetic mother with the femoral hypoplasia--unusual facies syndrome is presented. At birth the characteristic facial pattern of long philtrum with thin upper lip, micrognathia and cleft palate was present. Both legs showed extreme shortening of the upper segments. X-rays showed numerous skeletal abberations including radioulnar synostosis of the right elbow, dysplastic sacrum and hypoplasia of the femurs, the right one more severe. Radiological findings also revealed abnormal left kidney's collecting system and absence of the right kidney. Possible contributing

A new psychomotor retardation syndrome with peculiar facies and marfanoid habitus.

We studied four sibs, two males and two females, who presented psychomotor retardation, typical flat facies and some features of the Marfan phenotype such as tall stature, long and slim limbs, arm span larger than height, "arachnodactyloid" hands and feet, little subcutaneous fat and muscle hypotonia. It is concluded that the aggregate of morphoneurological anomalies constitute a new syndrome probably inherited in an autosomal recessive fashion.
