Social feedback informs generalisation of control beliefs.

Perceived control in one context can affect behaviour in novel contexts. One potentially important variable determining generalisation is how perceived control in one context shapes beliefs about the self. Typically, learned helplessness studies do not control or manipulate beliefs about the self. Here, we test whether observing others' ability to exert control helps to inform inferences about whether the controllability is primarily due to one's own ability or a feature of the current environment, and thereby determines the degree of generalisation. In an initial study (N = 200) and pre-regis

Intransitive Eco-Evolutionary Feedback Loops Maintain Coexistence.

AbstractThe maintenance of diversity has long been understood through the lens of the pairwise competitive interaction. However, work on the simplest multi- (three-)species systems have helped both evolutionary biologists and ecologists uncover mechanisms that maintain complex communities across both ecology and evolution. Rock-paper-scissors (RPS) dynamics illustrate how negative frequency dependence can affect evolutionary relationships and promote genetic diversity within populations. These same effects underlie the diversity of intransitive systems, which allow for the coexistence of even

Variable feedback timing influences motor learning strategy.

Learning a new motor skill requires a delicate balance between exploring new motor control solutions and exploiting known solutions. A commonly observed learning strategy that may reflect the interplay between exploration and exploitation involves holding a joint or a motor parameter constant while varying other degrees of freedom. By examining the relative variability between two deciding parameters of a novel single-joint motor learning task, we quantify usage of this strategy and relate it to motor learning and performance. In addition, we ask how experimentally induced motor variability, i

Feedback Between Behavioral Adaptations and Disease Dynamics.

We study the feedback processes between individual behavior, disease prevalence, interventions and social networks during an influenza pandemic when a limited stockpile of antivirals is shared between the private and the public sectors. An economic model that uses prevalence-elastic demand for interventions is combined with a detailed social network and a disease propagation model to understand the feedback mechanism between epidemic dynamics, market behavior, individual perceptions, and the social network. An urban and a rural region are simulated to assess the robustness of results. Results

[Electrical Stimulation System with Surface Electromyography Feedback].

Currently, various kinds of electrical stimulation equipment are used in the rehabilitation of muscle function for patients with hemiplegia, but many defects can be found in those designs, for example, insufficient feedback parameter, unsynchronized information, unintuitive display and so on. Therefore, this study introduces an electrical stimulation system with surface electromyography (sEMG) feedback based on LabVIEW, which combines with multi-channel sEMG acquisition, electrical stimulator and other hardware system. This system can not only provide a wide electrical stimulation parameters r

MicroRNAs/TP53 feedback circuitry in glioblastoma multiforme.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are increasingly implicated in regulating cancer initiation and progression. In this study, two miRNAs, miR-25 and -32, are identified as p53-repressed miRNAs by p53-dependent negative regulation of their transcriptional regulators, E2F1 and MYC. However, miR-25 and -32 result in p53 accumulation by directly targeting Mdm2 and TSC1, which are negative regulators of p53 and the mTOR (mammalian target of rapamycin) pathway, respectively, leading to inhibition of cellular proliferation through cell cycle arrest. Thus, there is a recurrent autoregulatory circuit involving expres

Disrupting vagal feedback affects birdsong motor control.

Coordination of different motor systems for sound production involves the use of feedback mechanisms. Song production in oscines is a well-established animal model for studying learned vocal behavior. Whereas the online use of auditory feedback has been studied in the songbird model, very little is known about the role of other feedback mechanisms. Auditory feedback is required for the maintenance of stereotyped adult song. In addition, the use of somatosensory feedback to maintain pressure during song has been demonstrated with experimentally induced fluctuations in air sac pressure. Feedback

Mirror visual feedback therapy. A practical approach.

Mirror visual feedback (MVF) was first proposed as a therapy to relieve amputee phantom limb pain in the early 1990s. It is increasingly used to treat a range of other chronic pain conditions. The evidence base to date is limited. Much of the literature consists of pilot projects or case study designs although larger randomized controlled trails are now emerging. However, the described protocols for MVF are inadequate to adapt to clinical practice. In addition, the therapist sees a heterogeneous population whose characteristics may fall outside those of the tight inclusion/exclusion criteria o

Students prefer the immediate feedback assessment technique.

Students responded to a questionnaire after completing classroom examinations using either Scantron forms or the Immediate Feedback Assessment Technique. Factor analysis of students' responses yielded six scales unrelated to students' grades and not differing by sex, course, or instructor. Students evaluated on the latter technique scored significantly higher on scales measuring ease of understanding and ease of completing response requirements, perceived fairness of and preference for an answer-until-correct procedure, and enhanced involvement in the test-taking process.

Focus group feedback from breast cancer patients.

Wayne Memorial Hospital uses focus groups to elicit feedback from clients. One group involved 11 women with breast cancer. Aspects of interest included screening and detection, diagnostic evaluation, treatment, life after cancer, and general perceptions of cancer care. The findings revealed that participants felt the community offered high-quality progressive cancer care. Opportunities for improvement along the continuum were identified, including a need for personalized breast self-exam education, consideration of bed placement in the room following breast surgery, and additional support for

Contraction-excitation feedback in human atrial fibrillation.

BACKGROUND: Contraction-excitation feedback, that is, electrophysiologic changes that are caused or preceded by mechanical changes of the myocardium, has been extensively studied in the ventricles. The role of contraction-excitation feedback in the atria, and more particularly in the genesis and maintenance of atrial fibrillation, has been less adequately investigated. HYPOTHESIS: The aim of the present study was to determine whether increased right atrial pressure (RAP) facilitates the induction of atrial fibrillation (AF) in patients with a history of lone AF. METHODS: Sixteen patients wit

Developmental dyslexia: a motor-articulatory feedback hypothesis.

Reading is mediated by parallel and widely distributed modular systems. There are, therefore, multiple loci in these systems where dysfunction may lead to developmental dyslexia. However, most normal children learn to read using the alphabetic system. Learning to use this system requires awareness that words are comprised of a system of speech sounds (phonological awareness) and the knowledge of how to convert letters (graphemes) into these speech sounds (phonemes). Most dyslexic children have deficient phonological awareness and have difficulty converting graphemes into phonemes. Studies of p

Antibody feedback regulation in MRL/lpr mice.

MRL/Mp-lpr/lpr (MRL/l) mice spontaneously develop autoimmune disease, characterized by glomerulonephritis, polyarteritis and polyarthritis. The lpr mice have defects in the Fas antigen, which plays a role in apoptosis, and it has been suggested that lack of negative selection of autoreactive T cells explains the initiation of the disease. The extremely high amount of autoantibodies may reflect additional immunoregulatory abnormalities. Antibody feedback regulation is an efficient way of up- or downregulating antibody responses. We have for the first time determined whether IgG-mediated suppres

Improving physician performance through peer comparison feedback.

A project to improve physician performance in colorectal cancer screening was evaluated as part of an ambulatory quality assurance program. A minimum standard was adopted requiring a digital examination and stool test for occult blood at annual check-ups of patients aged 40 years and older. During a 31/2-year period, three different intervention strategies for improved compliance with the standard were sequentially implemented and assessed: educational meeting, retrospective feedback of group compliance rate, and retrospective feedback of individual compliance rate compared with that of peers.

Bell palsy: muscle reeducation by electromyograph feedback.

The present case study investigated the efficacy of feedback in restoring muscle control to facial muscles which had been affected by Bell palsy. The subject, a woman, was provided an analog tone as feedback for modifying the muscle activity on the paralyzed (right) side of her face to match that of her nonaffected (left) side. The results showed a statistically significant shift in muscle activity in masseter, zygomaticus, and orbicularis oculi muscles. Post-treatment levels closely approximated the nonaffected side, and resulted in more normal facial characteristics with respect to jaw posit

Effects of multimodal feedback on L2 English learners' lexical stress error correction: The role of learning style and feedback preference.

Lexical stress contributes to intelligibility and comprehensibility in English, yet it remains challenging for many second language (L2) learners and is often underemphasized in pronunciation instruction. With the rapid development of technology-enhanced language learning, multimodal feedback delivered through text, audio, or visual cues offers promising avenues for improving L2 pronunciation, although evidence for its effectiveness on lexical stress remains limited. This study examined how different feedback modes facilitate the correction of English lexical stress errors and whether learning

Acute stress modulates feedback processing in men and women: differential effects on the feedback-related negativity and theta and beta power.

Sex-specific prevalence rates in mental and physical disorders may be partly explained by sex differences in physiological stress responses. Neural networks that might be involved are those underlying feedback processing. Aim of the present EEG study was to investigate whether acute stress alters feedback processing, and whether stress effects differ between men and women. Male and female participants performed a gambling task, in a control and a stress condition. Stress was induced by exposing participants to a noise stressor. Brain activity was analyzed using both event-related potential and
