Contrasted accumulation patterns of persistent organic pollutants and mercury in sympatric tropical dolphins from the south-western Indian Ocean.

Due to their high trophic position and long life span, small cetaceans are considered as suitable bioindicators to monitor the presence of contaminants in marine ecosystems. Here, we document the contamination with persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and total mercury (T-Hg) of spinner (Stenella longirostris, n =21) and Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus, n=32) sampled from the coastal waters of La Réunion (south-western Indian Ocean). In addition, seven co-occurring teleost fish species were sampled and analyzed as well. Blubber samples from living dolphins and muscle from te

Soldado virus (Hughes group) from Ornithodoros (Alectorobius) capensis (Ixodoidea: Argasidae) infesting Sooty Tern colonies in the Seychelles, Indian Ocean.

In the summer of 1973, about 5,000 pairs of adult Sooty Terns abandoned a specific part of their breeding grounds on Bird Island in the Seychelles. Incubated eggs and newly hatched chicks were left unattended and the area was not reoccupied in 1974. Numerous Ornithodoros (Alectorobius) capensis occurred in the deserted part in both years, but few or none in the area where bird breeding was normal. Persons visiting the deserted area were bitten by many ticks and experienced severe pruritus persisting for several days. In 1973 and 1974, Soldado (SOL) virus (Hughes serogroup) was isolated from th

Exposure of pelagic seabirds to Toxoplasma gondii in the Western Indian Ocean points to an open sea dispersal of this terrestrial parasite.

Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite that uses felids as definitive hosts and warm-blooded animals as intermediate hosts. While the dispersal of T. gondii infectious oocysts from land to coastal waters has been well documented, transmission routes to pelagic species remain puzzling. We used the modified agglutination test (MAT titre ≥ 10) to detect antibodies against T. gondii in sera collected from 1014 pelagic seabirds belonging to 10 species. Sampling was carried out on eight islands of the Western Indian Ocean: Reunion and Juan de Nova (colonized by cats), Cousin, Cousine, Aride, Bird

Biogeography of Leptospira in wild animal communities inhabiting the insular ecosystem of the western Indian Ocean islands and neighboring Africa.

Understanding the processes driving parasite assemblages is particularly important in the context of zoonotic infectious diseases. Leptospirosis is a widespread zoonotic bacterial infection caused by pathogenic species of the genus Leptospira. Despite a wide range of animal hosts, information is still lacking on the factors shaping Leptospira diversity in wild animal communities, especially in regions, such as tropical insular ecosystems, with high host species richness and complex biogeographical patterns. Using a large dataset (34 mammal species) and a multilocus approach at a regional scale

[Current debates on immunology of preeclampsia. Report of the sixth international workshop of Reunion Island (Indian Ocean, December 2008)].

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) represent globally 10% of human births and their major complication, preeclampsia, 3 to 5%. The etiology of these HDP remains still uncertain, however major advances have been made these last 25 years. The Sixth International Workshop on Reproductive Immunology, Immunological Tolerance and Immunology of Preeclampsia 2008 celebrated its 10th Anniversary in Reunion-island (French overseas Department in the Indian Ocean). Over this decade, these six workshops have contributed extensively to immunological, epidemiological, anthropological and even vascular

Surveillance of Fleas and Their Small Mammal Hosts for Plague Risks in Some Main Seaports of the Islands of the Southwestern Indian Ocean.

Since ancient times, seaports have been the hot spots for plague introduction into free countries. Infected ship rats reached new areas, and epizootics occurred prior to human infection via flea bites. Beginning in the 1920s/1930s, rodent and flea surveillance was carried out as part of plague hazard management in seaports of the world. Nowadays, such activity is not done regularly. In the southwestern Indian Ocean (SWIO) region, plague surveillance is of great importance given plague endemicity in Madagascar and thus the incurred risk for neighboring islands. This study reports animal-based s

2024 re-emergence of coxsackievirus A24 variant causing an outbreak of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis in the South West Indian Ocean.

In early 2024, an outbreak of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis occurred in Mayotte and in Madagascar, two islands in the Indian Ocean. Real-time diagnosis and genotyping identified a different lineage of coxsackievirus A24 variant (CVA24v) from the current Asian outbreak. Although no recombination event had been detected in all previously reported CVA24v-associated outbreaks associated with the subgenotype IV, we characterized a putative recombinant strain by full-length genome sequencing.

Only One Percent of Important Shark and Ray Areas in the Western Indian Ocean Are Fully Protected From Fishing Pressure.

The Western Indian Ocean (WIO) is known for its high diversity of chondrichthyans (sharks, rays, and chimaeras). However, intense fishing pressure has led to severe population declines and local extinctions of several species. The Important Shark and Ray Area (ISRA) process is a collaborative, evidence-based approach used to identify critical habitat for chondrichthyans. We analysed ISRAs across the WIO to quantify the diversity of research methods used to identify them, evaluate spatial overlap with designated marine protected areas (MPAs), model the influence of several species- and jurisdic

Depth-stratified zooplankton diversity in the central Indian Ocean Basin: An integrative pre-mining survey using morphology and DNA metabarcoding.

Zooplankton play a crucial role in marine food webs and biogeochemical cycles, and their rapid responses to environmental changes make them effective indicators of ecosystem health. However, limited data on zooplankton diversity within the polymetallic nodule (PMN) contract area of the Central Indian Ocean Basin (CIOB) restrict the reference information available for future monitoring. Mesozooplankton communities were characterised through morphological identification and 18S rRNA metabarcoding. Samples were obtained using a depth-stratified Multilayer Plankton Net (MPN; 0-5000 m) and mesopela

Characterization of IMI-4 carbapenemase-producing Enterobacter sp. isolated from humans and a companion animal in French Indian Ocean territories.

BACKGROUND: Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE) are a significant public health concern, associated with high morbidity and mortality rates due to restricted antibiotic treatment options. Among the genetic determinants of CPE resistance, imipenemase (IMI) mediated resistance is an emerging problem in infections involving bacteria of the Enterobacter cloacae complex (ECC) and has been linked to worldwide clinical cases, including community-level outbreaks in the Indian Ocean region. Little is known about the potential role of animals as reservoirs of multidrug-resistant ECC bacteria.

Organic and total mercury levels in bigeye tuna, Thunnus obesus, harvested by Taiwanese fishing vessels in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.

Muscle samples of 121 and 110 bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) caught by Taiwanese long-line fishing vessels in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, respectively, were used to analyze total mercury (THg) and organic mercury (OHg) content. The overall THg and OHg concentrations were 0.786 ± 0.386 (0.214-3.133) and 0.595 ± 0.238 (0.143-2.222) mg kg⁻¹ wet weight, respectively, similar to the results of previous studies. Our findings, however, reflected the highest THg and OHg concentrations for the species in each ocean among the published data. Mean THg and OHg concentrations in Atlantic tuna were signif

Genetic diversity on the Comoros Islands shows early seafaring as major determinant of human biocultural evolution in the Western Indian Ocean.

The Comoros Islands are situated off the coast of East Africa, at the northern entrance of the channel of Mozambique. Contemporary Comoros society displays linguistic, cultural and religious features that are indicators of interactions between African, Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian (SEA) populations. Influences came from the north, brought by the Arab and Persian traders whose maritime routes extended to Madagascar by 700-900 AD. Influences also came from the Far East, with the long-distance colonisation by Austronesian seafarers that reached Madagascar 1500 years ago. Indeed, strong gene

Estimations of densities of marine litter on the fringing reefs of Mayotte (France - South Western Indian Ocean) - impacts on coral communities.

The present study was carried out at 22 stations located on the fringing reefs of the island of Mayotte inside the perimeter of the Marine Natural Park of Mayotte (PNMM). The average assessment of the number of samples of marine litter (ML) collected at these stations was 3.9 ± 1.3 ML per 500 m2 in winter and 3.8 ± 1.1 ML per 500 m2 in summer. Plastic ML was dominant, representing approximately 92% of the litter collected at the stations for the two seasons. The majority was plastic ML from fishing gear (lines, nets etc.). Station 18 presented remarkable average densities of 39 ± 4.2 ML per 50

Seroepidemiology, viral isolation, and molecular characterization of human T cell leukemia/lymphoma virus type I from La Réunion Island, Indian Ocean.

Data indicate the presence in the Seychelles Islands of a high level of human T cell leukemia/lymphoma virus type I (HTLV-I) endemicity as well as the presence of tropical spastic paraparesis/HTLV-I-associated myelopathy (TSP/HAM). We present here the results of an hospital survey performed since 1988 in La Réunion Island, located in the Indian Ocean southeast of the Seychelles archipelago, aimed at evaluating HTLV-I endemicity, detecting HTLV-I-associated diseases, and characterizing viral isolates. Seven individuals were found to have HTLV-I-specific antibodies in their sera. These include 3

Uncovering genetic population structure in the Endangered northern rockhopper penguin (Eudyptes moseleyi) across islands in the Southern Atlantic and Indian oceans.

BACKGROUND: The northern rockhopper penguin (Eudyptes moseleyi) is a threatened species, listed as Endangered globally by the IUCN owing to rapid population decreases in the past, combined with a limited distributional range. Their breeding is confined to five islands in the central South Atlantic Ocean (Gough, Nightingale, Inaccessible, Alex (= Middle), and Tristan da Cunha) and two islands in the southern Indian Ocean (Amsterdam and Saint Paul). Non-breeding birds forage widely in these oceans and vagrant individuals have been recorded in the Falkland Islands/Malvinas, South Africa, Kerguele

Vector competence of Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti from the islands of the Southwestern Indian Ocean for epidemic Zika, dengue, and chikungunya viruses.

BACKGROUND: Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti are key vectors involved in the transmission of human pathogens worldwide. Epidemiological studies have demonstrated varying levels of arbovirus transmission by these mosquito vectors, leading to an increasing number of investigations that assess vector competence (the ability of an insect to become infected and subsequently transmit a pathogen) of Ae. albopictus and Ae. aegypti lines, to decipher the risks associated with each species. In this study, we evaluated the vector competence of Ae. albopictus and Ae. aegypti lines from the Southwestern

External quality assessment of Rift Valley fever diagnosis in countries at risk of the disease: African, Indian Ocean and Middle-East regions.

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV), an arbovirus belonging to the Phlebovirus genus of the Phenuiviridae family, causes the zoonotic and mosquito-borne RVF. The virus, which primarily affects livestock (ruminants and camels) and humans, is at the origin of recent major outbreaks across the African continent (Mauritania, Libya, Sudan), and in the South-Western Indian Ocean (SWIO) islands (Mayotte). In order to be better prepared for upcoming outbreaks, to predict its introduction in RVFV unscathed countries, and to run efficient surveillance programmes, the priority is harmonising and improving the
