The fetal development of mice trisomic for chromosome 13 (Ts 13) was investigated. Trisomic fetuses were obtained from the progeny of male mice heterozygous for the two Robertsonian translocation chromosomes Rb (11.13)4Bnr and Rb (6.13)3Rma mated to "all acrocentric" NMRI females. Trisomic fetuses were found at all stages between days 12 and 19 of gestation (vaginal plug day counted as day 1). The frequency of trisomy was 24.8% of all surviving implants. The frequency of Ts decreased slightly but not significantly with progressing pregnancy. In eight newborn litters, two dead and four living t

We report a case in which fetal growth restriction was observed during pregnancy. A placental chromosomal analysis was performed to investigate the cause of the fetal growth restriction and it showed trisomy 9. Prompt chromosomal testing of the neonate led to the diagnosis of trisomy 9 mosaicism. Although the neonate was small for gestational age and had mild respiratory distress and feeding difficulties, her clinical symptoms were minimal. Trisomy 9 mosaicism is extremely rare and shows considerable variability in its clinical presentation. This case report is important because trisomy 9 was

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Trisomy 18 and trisomy 13 are the most common autosomal trisomies following trisomy 21, with overall incidence rising. Both diagnoses are characterized by multisystem involvement and were previously thought to be incompatible with life. New data suggest that prolonged survival is possible, and thus many families are opting for more aggressive medical interventions. This study aims to describe airway findings in trisomy 18 and trisomy 13, as these have not been comprehensively studied and can impact medical decision-making. We hypothesize that most children with triso

The objective of this study is to determine the risk of fetal loss (spontaneous abortion or stillbirth) following a prenatal diagnosis of trisomy 13 (T13; Patau syndrome) or trisomy 18 (T18; Edwards syndrome). Five regional congenital anomaly registers in England and Wales provided details on the outcomes of 198 pregnancies prenatally diagnosed with T13 and 538 prenatally diagnosed with T18. For each pregnancy the time from prenatal diagnosis until birth, miscarriage or termination occurred was calculated and these times were analyzed using Kaplan-Meier survival functions. Our results showed t

OBJECTIVES: To establish precise incidence figures for trisomy 13 and trisomy 18 in the former Trent region, to identify current prenatal diagnostic practice, and to assess the potential impact of the introduction of recently devised prenatal diagnostic practices.
METHODS: An audit of all cases of trisomy 13 and trisomy 18 ascertained through the records of the Trent Congenital Anomalies Register and the Trent Regional Cytogenetic Laboratories.
RESULTS: Forty-four cases of trisomy 13 and 88 cases of trisomy 18 were ascertained. Advanced maternal age effects were observed. Of all cases, 64% w

BACKGROUND: Transient abnormal myelopoiesis (TAM) is a transient abnormal leukemoid reaction that occurs in approximately 5-10% of Down syndrome cases. TAM is typically self-limiting, however, it can be life-threatening because of severe pulmonary or hepatic complications. Approximately 20% of these patients develop acute megakaryoblastic leukemia after remission by the age of 4 years. Here, we report a case of TAM with trisomy 21, tetrasomy 21, and trisomy 19.
CASE REPORT: The patient was a 1-day-old male neonate with nuchal translucency measured by fetal ultrasonography at 16 weeks of gesta

Over the last several decades, there has been a steady increase in medical and surgical interventions provided for infants and children with trisomy 13 or trisomy 18 (chromosomal syndromes associated with a range of congenital anomalies and universally severe neurodevelopmental impairment). Despite previous characterizations of these disorders as being uniformly lethal, multiple studies have demonstrated improved morbidity and mortality when indicated interventions, such as cardiac surgery, are performed, and these interventions and their potential risks and benefits can be carefully explored

To investigate the role that cardiac anomalies play in the early death frequently seen in the trisomy 13 and the trisomy 18 syndromes, two-dimensional and Doppler echocardiograms from 31 newborn infants with cytogenetic confirmation of these syndromes seen at one institution over a 4.5 year period (1983 to 1988) were reviewed. The mean age at echocardiography was 1.5 days, and the median age at death was 14 days. Significant cyanosis was present in 58%. Cardiac anomalies that would be considered lethal within the neonatal period were present in only 19% of patients. The most common lesions wer

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate time of diagnosis of 22q11.2 deletion and 22q11.2 duplication as well as trisomies 21, 13, and 18 before and after introduction of a prenatal screening program including combined first-trimester screening (cFTS) for the trisomies in Denmark in 2004.
METHOD: Cross-sectional, population-based register study employing The Danish Cytogenetic Central Register. Proportions of cases diagnosed 1998-2004 and 2005-2017 were compared before 14+0 and 22+0 weeks and birth (prenatal cases) or up to 1 or 10 years of age (postnatal cases).
RESULTS: In total, 4562 cases were included.

IMPORTANCE: Trisomy 13 (T13) and trisomy 18 (T18) are chromosomal abnormalities with high mortality rates in the first year of life. Understanding differences in long-term survival between children with full vs mosaic or partial trisomy is crucial for prognosis and health care planning.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the differences in 10-year survival between children with full T13 and T18 vs those with mosaic or partial trisomy.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective, population-based cohort study assessed liveborn infants with T13 and T18 in the Texas Birth Defects Registry (deliver

The possibility of distinguishing in routine diagnostics translocation trisomy dup(21q) from disomy 21 as well as from free trisomy 21 using interphase fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with a single copy probe (LSI 21) localized on chromosome 21q22.13-q22.2 is described. In free trisomy 21 and translocation trisomy dup(21q) 94%-98% of the nuclei exhibit 3 specific signals, while in disomy 21 only up to 6% of them have 3 false positive signals. Furthermore, reliable differentiation between free and translocation trisomy dup(21q) can be achieved by evaluating the percentage of nuclei wi

Mosaic trisomy 14 is exceptionally rare and was first described in the 1970s with fewer than 100 known liveborn individuals. Information about complications and the natural history of the disease is rare, especially in adult patients. This case illustrates an adult patient with severe functional limitations from mosaic trisomy 14 who presented with abdominal pain and failure to thrive and was subsequently found to have intussusception and severe chronic constipation, which was successfully treated conservatively.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to identify the most common prenatal sonographic findings in fetuses with complete trisomy 9.
METHODS: A retrospective review of all cases of trisomy 9 at 5 participating institutions over a 15-year interval was conducted. Indications for referral and sonographic findings in each case were reviewed to identify characteristic fetal structural anomalies.
RESULTS: Six cases of trisomy 9 are presented. Most patients were referred for abnormal sonographic findings on screening examinations (66%) or advanced maternal age (33%). Fetal heart defects and centr

Complete trisomy 9 is a lethal diagnosis and most fetuses diagnosed thus die prenatally or during the early postnatal period and majority of such cases have been known to end in spontaneous abortion in the first trimester itself. One such rare survival of fetus ending in normal delivery and surviving until 20 days is reported here detailing the clinical manifestations of the child during the period of survival. The salient clinical features observed were small face, wide fontanel, prominent occiput, micrognathia, low set ears, upslanting palpebral fissures, high arched palate, short sternum, o

Trisomy 18 is a devastating genetic disorder that can be characterized by multiple congenital anomalies. Some of these anomalies have no medical significance, but merely provide clues to suggest the diagnosis. The most common form of trisomy 18 is the nondisjunction type, which affects every cell of the body with an extra chromosome 18. Mfected infants are typically born with a prominent occiput, short eye fissures with droopy eyelids, micrognathia, external ear variations, clenched fist with index finger overlapping the third finger and fifth finger overlapping the fourth, small fingernails a

Kabuki syndrome (KS) (MIM 147920) is a multiple congenital anomalies/mental retardation syndrome of unknown cause. There is multisystem involvement of anomalies, including 1) unique facial features, 2) postnatal growth retardation, 3) mild-to-moderate mental retardation, 4) skeletal anomalies and 5) dermatoglyphic abnormalities. Kabuki syndrome remains a clinical diagnosis despite significant research on detection of the genetic cause. We present 10 patients with Kabuki syndrome with a brief overview of the syndrome. An additional male patient and his affected aunt, both with trisomy 10p due t

BACKGROUND: Previously reported pathological series suggest that cardiac malformations are universal in trisomy 18. We examined our experience of fetal echocardiography in trisomy 18 for comparison.
METHODS: Of 255 fetuses with trisomy 18 detected in our centre between January 1999 and June 2004, 174 were evaluated using fetal echocardiography. Our results were compared to four previous echocardiographic and four autopsy series, comprising 89 and 110 patients, respectively.
RESULTS: Of these 174 fetuses, 114 were examined between 10 and 14 weeks gestation and the remainder between 15 and 33

Neonatal chylothorax is an uncommon cause of respiratory distress in the newborn. It may result from anomalous lymph drainage with or without association with aneuploidy syndromes (trisomy, Turner's syndrome, Noonan's syndrome), from injury to the thoracic duct, and from obstruction of the superior vena cava. We report a term newborn and a premature infant with neonatal chylothorax, both associated with trisomy 21. In the case of the term infant, bilateral pleural effusions were diagnosed immediately before birth. The baby suffered from respiratory distress. The physical findings were characte
