Resting-state electroencephalographic rhythms depend on sex in patients with dementia due to Parkinson's and Lewy Body diseases: An exploratory study.

Parkinson's disease with dementia (PDD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) are more prevalent in males than females. Furthermore, they typically showed abnormally high delta (< 4 Hz) and low alpha (8-10 Hz) rhythms from resting-state electroencephalographic (rsEEG) activity. Here, we hypothesized that those abnormalities may depend on the patient's sex. An international database provided clinical-demographic-rsEEG datasets for cognitively unimpaired older (Healthy; N = 49; 24 females), PDD (N = 39; 13 females), and DLB (N = 38; 15 females) participants. Each group was stratified into matched

Longitudinal mapping of a randomized controlled trial of EEG neurofeedback in PTSD: Early symptom stabilization and implications for adjunctive therapeutic potential.

INTRODUCTION: PTSD is characterized by reduced alpha (8-12 Hz) rhythms, reflecting cortical hyperarousal and disrupted large-scale network dynamics. Across single- and multi-session studies, alpha-desynchronizing EEG neurofeedback (EEG-NFB) restores alpha rhythms toward normative levels ("alpha rebound") and reduces PTSD symptoms. However, prior research has focused mainly on pre-to-post intervention changes, leaving longitudinal trajectories of therapeutic improvement and neural modulation unclear. METHODS: We conducted longitudinal mapping of clinical and neural outcomes during a 20-week ra

Clonidine in vivo mimics the acute suppressive but not the phase-shifting effects of light on circadian rhythm of serotonin N-acetyltransferase activity in chick pineal gland.

Comparative in vivo studies on effects of pulses of light and clonidine, a selective agonist of alpha 2-adrenergic receptors, on the circadian rhythm of serotonin N-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity in chick pineal gland were performed. Six-hour pulses of white light caused an acute suppression of the nocturnal NAT activity and phase-dependent phase shifts of the circadian rhythm of the enzyme activity relative to controls. Systemic administration of clonidine acutely suppressed NAT activity of chick pineal gland, but did not affect the phase of subsequent cycles in constant darkness. These res

Abnormal electroencephalographic rhythms from quiet wakefulness to light sleep in Alzheimer's disease patients with mild cognitive impairment.

OBJECTIVES: Alzheimer's disease patients with mild cognitive impairment (ADMCI) show abnormal resting-state eyes-closed electroencephalographic (rsEEG) alpha rhythms (8-12 Hz) and may suffer from daytime sleepiness. Our exploratory study tested the hypothesis that they may present characteristic EEG rhythms from quiet wakefulness to light sleep during diurnal recordings. METHODS: Datasets of 34 ADMCI and 22 matched healthy elderly (Nold) subjects were obtained from international archives. EEG recordings lasted approximately 30 min. Transitions of EEG activity from quiet wakefulness (alpha-dom

[The encephalogram in women during pregnancy and in the postpartum period].

The EEG registration during gestation and after delivery in fifteen women was done. The EEG analysis has shown the alpha-rhythm amplitude and frequency fluctuation during pregnancy and maximum of power spectra in third trimester. After delivery, a general decrease in alpha rhythm was observed. In addition, general decay of the brain functional state occurred which was manifested by paroxysmal activity in hyperventilation in some women. The results are discussed from the point of view of the central regulation of hormonal state in women during pregnancy and after deliver.

The feedsideward of cephalo-adrenal immune interactions.

The feedsideward phenomenon is the interaction of three or more rhythmic physiological entities by a diversified spectrum of rhythms that constitute a rhythmic network. These rhythmic units are: a) the modulator, b) the actor, c) the reactor and d) the integrative unity. Rhythmic interactions are characterized by an alternating sequence of algorithmically predictable effects of attenuation, no effect, and stimulation occurring in different frequencies. The basis of this phenomenon was determined from experimental evidence derived from cephalo-adrenal ex vivo studies. Internal phase-shift studi

A Mixed Longitudinal EEG Study of Sensorimotor Rhythm Modulation and Its Relationship with Language Development in Children Aged 3-10 Years.

Background: Sensorimotor (mu) rhythms reflect the functional state of sensorimotor cortical networks and are of increasing interest for understanding typical and atypical neurodevelopment. However, the developmental trajectories of mu rhythm modulation in preschool and early school-age children remain poorly characterized. Objectives: We studied age-related changes in alpha (8-13 Hz) and beta (13-30 Hz) sensorimotor rhythms in children aged 3 to 10 years using a mixed longitudinal design and investigated their relationship with language development. Methods: EEG was recorded twice (interval ~1

Abnormal cortical neural synchronization mechanisms in quiet wakefulness are related to motor deficits, cognitive symptoms, and visual hallucinations in Parkinson's disease patients: an electroencephalographic study.

Compared with Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD) shows peculiar clinical manifestations related to vigilance (i.e., executive cognitive deficits and visual hallucinations) that may be reflected in resting-state electroencephalographic rhythms. To test this hypothesis, clinical and resting-state electroencephalographic rhythms in age-, sex-, and education-matched PD patients (N = 136) and Alzheimer's disease patients (AD, N = 85), and healthy older participants (Nold, N = 65), were available from an international archive. Electroencephalographic sources were estimated by eLORETA

Resting state cortical electroencephalographic rhythms in covert hepatic encephalopathy and Alzheimer's disease.

Patients suffering from prodromal (i.e., amnestic mild cognitive impairment, aMCI) and overt Alzheimer's disease (AD) show abnormal cortical sources of resting state electroencephalographic (EEG) rhythms. Here we tested the hypothesis that these sources show extensive abnormalities in liver cirrhosis (LC) patients with a cognitive impairment due to covert and diffuse hepatic encephalopathy (CHE). EEG activity was recorded in 64 LC (including 21 CHE), 21 aMCI, 21 AD, and 21 cognitively intact (Nold) subjects. EEG rhythms of interest were delta (2-4 Hz), theta (4-8 Hz), alpha 1 (8-10.5 Hz), alph

Cortical sources of resting-state EEG rhythms in "experienced" HIV subjects under antiretroviral therapy.

OBJECTIVE: Treatment-naïve patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are characterized by diffuse abnormalities of resting-state cortical electroencephalographic (EEG) rhythms (Babiloni et al., 2012a). Here, we tested the hypothesis that these EEG rhythms vary as a function of the systemic immune activity and antiretroviral therapy (ART) in HIV patients. METHODS: Resting-state eyes-closed EEG data were recorded in 68 ART-HIV patients (mini mental state evaluation (MMSE) of 27.5 ± 0.3 SEM), in 60 treatment-naïve HIV subjects (MMSE of 27.5 ± 0.4 SEM) and in 75 age-matched cognitively nor

Examining motor evoked potential amplitude and short-interval intracortical inhibition on the up-going and down-going phases of a transcranial alternating current stimulation (tacs) imposed alpha oscillation.

Many brain regions exhibit rhythmical activity thought to reflect the summed behaviour of large populations of neurons. The endogenous alpha rhythm has been associated with phase-dependent modulation of corticospinal excitability. However, whether exogenous alpha rhythm, induced using transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) also has a phase-dependent effect on corticospinal excitability remains unknown. Here, we triggered transcranial magnetic stimuli (TMS) on the up- or down-going phase of a tACS-imposed alpha oscillation and measured motor evoked potential (MEP) amplitude and sho

Role of olfactory reactions, nociception, and immunoendocrine shifts in addictive disorders.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Addictive pathology is associated with nervous, immune, and endocrine shifts. Meanwhile, the nature of intersystemic relationship lying beneath addictive disorders remains unclear. The purpose of the study was to identify neuroimmunoendocrine markers of addictive disorders in male subjects defining the nature of their interaction. METHODS: The study enrolled 69 subjects aged 18-43 years: 59 males and 10 females divided into those with addictive disorders (n = 39) and conditionally healthy subjects (n = 30). EEG testing with olfactory stimulation, olfactometric, and

Nicotine and tobacco dependence: normalization or stimulation?

Nicotine and tobacco use produces mixed stimulant and depressant effects on various brain functions in animals and human beings. Results of electroencephalographic studies indicate that some tobacco smokers after 10-24 h of tobacco deprivation exhibit a decrease in dominant alpha rhythm, which, immediately after smoking, increases toward that of nonsmokers. This is evidence that tobacco smoking in smokers involves normalization of brain activity. Results of other studies of acute smoking effects in smokers show an increase in dominant alpha rhythm greater than that of nonsmokers. This is evide

The Electroencephalographic Brainwave Spectrum, Mindful Meditation, and Awareness: Hypothesis.

It is hypothesized that being mindfully aware is a spontaneous state of being. It is imbued with joy, peace and happiness. Such a state is periodically revealed during restful attentiveness or presence. It is also associated with spontaneous brain alpha activity of 8-13 Hz. In deep nonrapid eye movement sleep, there is synchronous delta activity at a coherent frequency of 0.1 Hz. Both of these brainwave ground states are spontaneous, calm and effortless. When any physical or mental effort is made, the alpha rhythm is desynchronized, and it is superposed by faster brain waves of beta (13-30 Hz)

[Diagnostic value of electrophysiologic studies in presenile and senile dementia].

From the therapeutical point of view, reliable differentiations of different dementia types are required. Electrophysiological methods could be advantageous for this purpose. Healthy elderly people already show slight EEG-changes as slower alpha rhythm with decreased percent time and amplitude, furtheron temporal foci predominantly on the left side. Those changes partly are correlated with age, mental abilities, and vigilance. Considering clinical psychopathological findings, the EEG pattern can to some extent differentiate dementia types. The occurrence of disorganized diffuse theta and delta

EEG alpha reactivity in cognitive aging and dementia: clinical implications and cholinergic mechanisms.

Alpha reactivity-the attenuation of the alpha rhythms upon eye-opening-is a well-known phenomenon in electroencephalography (EEG). Altered alpha reactivity has increasingly been recognized as a potential biomarker for cognitive aging and various types of dementia. This mini-review synthesizes the existing literature on EEG alpha reactivity in older adults, highlighting its clinical implications and neurobiological underpinnings. Methodological issues in quantifying alpha reactivity are first addressed, including the choice of reactivity index, frequency bands, and spatial analysis methods. The

Plasma levels of alpha-melanotropin and ACTH-like immunoreactivities do not vary by season or skin type in women from southern and central Europe.

Melanotropins (MSH) are involved in tanning by stimulating melanocytes via the activation of the melanocortin-1 receptor to melanin production. Its main site of production is the pituitary gland, but alpha-MSH and related ACTH peptides are produced at other sites, including the skin. It has been hypothesized that systemic levels of alpha-MSH are controlled by a varying UV radiation (UVR) exposure. A seasonal rhythm of plasma levels has been proposed by some authors. We investigated healthy females in southern Spain and central Austria in summer and winter. The alpha-MSH and ACTH-like immunorea

[Neurophysiological changes in hypertension detectable in an EEG analysis by the BERG-Fourier method].

Studies of the neurophysiological (bioelectrical) characteristics of the brain by Berg--Fourier method of analysis of EEG in 120 patients have established that by the quantitative parameters (magnitude of the total spectrum capacity) the majority of patients with the hypertensive disease differ from the control group and from patients with other forms of arterial hypertension. By the same criterion the patients with hypertensive disease running a crisis course significantly differed from those with hypertensive disease without crises. By visual characteristics of frequency spectra the patients

[A search for the sources of pathological alpha activity in the human EEG in limbic structure lesions].

Dependence of manifestations of EEG pathological activity on the electrode montage was studied in cases of brain lesions involving limbic structures by means of the topographic mapping and 3-d dipole source localization. The original program DIPVIS on the basis of BRAINLOC software allowed us to reveal the stable sources of lateralized pathologic alpha activity and demonstrate the discrepancy between its localization and the localization of the normal human alpha rhythm. The sources of pathological activity in question were predominantly localized in the mediobasal structures of the affected h
