BACKGROUND: Hand-foot syndrome (HFS) is a complication of many anticancer therapies and negatively affects patients' quality of life (QoL). Currently, little data are available on using non-pharmacological skin products as standard therapy for HFS.
AIM: This study aims to investigate whether a specific set of cosmetic products is effective for managing HFS skin side effects in cancer patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This single-arm study involved 53 cancer patients with grade 1 HFS undergoing chemotherapy, targeted, or hormonal treatments at the European Institute of Oncology. The study incl

Split hand/split foot (ectrodactyly; SHSF) is a human developmental malformation characterized by missing digits and claw-like extremities. An autosomal dominant form of this disorder has been mapped to 7q21.3-q22.1; the locus has been designated SHFD1. We have constructed a physical map consisting of overlapping yeast artificial chromosome clones for the entire region. Somatic cell hybrid and fluorescent in situ hybridization analyses were used to define SHSF-associated chromosomal rearrangements in twelve patients. An SHFD1 critical interval of 1.5 Mb was established by analysis of five pati

We describe an unusual case of subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus concurrent with hand-foot syndrome, apparently associated with capecitabine treatment. We hypothesise that subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus and hand-foot syndrome may occur in a novel overlap syndrome.

Split-hand/foot malformation (SHFM), or ectrodactyly, is characterized by underdeveloped or absent central digital rays, clefts of the hands and feet, and variable syndactyly of the remaining digits. SHFM occurs as both an isolated finding and a component of many syndromes. SHFM is a heterogeneous condition caused by multiple loci, including SHFM1 (chromosome region 7q21-q22), SHFM2 (Xq26), SHFM3 (10q24), SHFM4 (3q27), and SHFM5 (2q31). Mutations in TP63 at the SHFM4 locus are known to underlie both syndromic and non-syndromic forms SHFM, but the causes of most non-syndromic SHFM cases remain

INTRODUCTION: Split-hand/split-foot malformation (SHFM) is a congenital limb defect characterized by central ray deficiency, resulting in deep median clefts of the hands and/or feet. Due to the nature of the malformation, the outer digits - those predominantly innervated by the ulnar nerve - are typically spared. In patients who rely on central cleft adduction and abduction as a substitute for thumb-index opposition, the ulnar nerve may assume a disproportionately critical role in hand function.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of bilateral cubital tunnel syndrome (CubTS) in a 23-year-old patien

Multiple evanescent white dot syndrome (MEWDS), an inflammatory retinal condition seen predominantly in young adult patients, is characterized by unilateral vision loss with variable scotomas. The etiology of MEWDS is currently elusive and the formal mechanism is unknown. However, it must be differentiated from other white dot syndromes (WDS). Fundus fluorescein angiography in MEWDS exhibits a "wreath-like" arrangement of hyperfluorescent lesions predominantly located in the outer retina. Herein we present a case of a 32-year-old Southeast Asian female who presented to the emergency department

In this report we present two halfsisters with typical cleft hand/cleft foot syndrome. Their father is normal, and family history is negative. This observation provides further evidence for germinal mosaicism in this autosomal dominant condition, with variable expression and penetrance.

We report on a baby girl with absence of the left hemidiaphragm, lumbosacral myelomeningocele, syndactyly with limb deficiencies, and bilateral hydronephrosis. A similar array of malformations was described previously by Czeizel and Losonci [Hum Genet 77:203-204, 1987] in a single family which showed a transmission pattern suggesting autosomal dominant inheritance with variable expressivity. The presence of limb abnormalities and the location of the neural tube defects in these cases suggest that the underlying pathogenesis probably does not involve the same disturbances of midline field devel

Capecitabine-induced hand-foot syndrome (HFS) is common in clinical practice. There are many regimens used to prevent HFS. However, the most effective preventive regimen has not yet been identified. Thus, we conducted a network meta-analysis to investigate the best preventive regimen for HFS. The PRISMA-NMA guidelines were used in this study. The PubMed, Cochrane, and Embase databases were searched. The main endpoint was set as HFS of National Cancer Institute grade 2 or more. We included only randomized control trials. The P-score was used to rank the regimens. Among all the regimens, topical

The Dlx5 homeodomain is a transcription factor related to the Drosophila distal-less gene that is associated with breast and lung cancer, lymphoma, Rett syndrome and osteoporosis in humans. Mutations in the DLX5 gene have been linked to deficiencies in craniofacial and limb development in higher eukaryotes, including split hand and foot malformation 1 in humans. Our characterization of a Dlx5 homeodomain:(CGACTAATTAGTCG)2 complex by NMR spectroscopy paved the way for determination of its crystal structure at 1.85Å resolution that enabled rationalization of the effects of disease-related mutati

Chemotherapy-induced hand-foot syndrome and nail changes are common complications of many classic chemotherapeutic agents and the newer molecular targeted therapies. They significantly impact patient quality of life, and frequently necessitate chemotherapy dose intensity modification or reduction. We aim to describe the epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, and current evidence-based treatment options for these entities.

p63 mutations have been associated with EEC syndrome (ectrodactyly, ectodermal dysplasia, and cleft lip/palate), as well as with nonsyndromic split hand-split foot malformation (SHFM). We performed p63 mutation analysis in a sample of 43 individuals and families affected with EEC syndrome, in 35 individuals affected with SHFM, and in three families with the EEC-like condition limb-mammary syndrome (LMS), which is characterized by ectrodactyly, cleft palate, and mammary-gland abnormalities. The results differed for these three conditions. p63 gene mutations were detected in almost all (40/43) i

A 40's year-old female patient with acute myeloblastic leukemia received high-dose cytarabine(HD-Ara-C)as her third induction therapy. Because the pharmacist in charge noticed on a prior interview that she had experienced a mild skin eruption similar to hand-foot syndrome(HFS)in the previous round oftherapy(idarubicin and cytarabine), heparinoid lotion and hypoallergenic soap were used to prevent HFS. However, HFS occurred on day 3, and further developed on day 6 to grade 3 with painful erythema, swelling, and paresthesia affecting the entire surface of both hands. We cared for her with moistu

The community burden of enterovirus is often monitored through syndromic monitoring systems based on reported cases of enterovirus-related infection (EVI) diagnoses. The extent to which this is affected by under- and over-diagnosis has not been reported. In Taiwan, children often make more than one healthcare visit during an episode of infection. We used change of diagnosis within an episode of infection as a guide of diagnostic uncertainty in a nationally representative cohort of Taiwanese children (n = 13 284) followed from birth to the 9th birthday through electronic health records. We cond

When evaluating foot and hand malformations in children, the orthopaedic surgeon must always consider the possibility of a more serious underlying syndrome with other accompanying abnormalities of organogenesis. We report the case of a 13-year-old female with Hand-Foot-Genital syndrome presenting to our foot and ankle clinic with tarsal coalition and hallux valgus interphalangeus - an unusual variation on the previously reported hallux varus associated with the syndrome. She was subsequently found to have a novel mutation in the HOXA13 gene. To our knowledge, this is the first report of Hand-F

Age, sex and chromosome effects on weight, height, sitting height, three head dimensions, and five hand and three foot measurements were analyzed from 57 patients (35 males and 22 females) with the Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS). No significant differences were observed in anthropometric data between PWS patients with the 15q chromosome deletion and those with normal chromosomes. Preschool children were found to have dolichocephaly, while hand and foot measurements, stature and sitting height were within normal range, although foot size was smaller than hand size in females when compared with PWS
