Two patients with optic disc drusen and tumour of the chiasmal region are presented. The association of optic disc drusen and intracranial space-occupying lesion is probably a chance occurrence. In spite of the recognition of the optic disc drusen, certain findings indicate further examinations. Progressive loss of central visual acuity unexplained by retinal pathology is an indication for a neurological investigation. Bitemporal and homonymous hemianopic visual field defects as well as evidence of papilloedema warrant a neurological evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Bietti crystalline dystrophy is primarily a retinal dystrophy caused by a CYP4V2 mutation and typically presents with crystalline retinal deposits in the posterior fundus.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of an otherwise healthy 39-year-old Iranian woman with no family history of ocular disease who suffered with progressive vision loss that had started 2 years prior to presentation. Ocular examination revealed blurry optic nerve head margin and diffuse retinal crystalline deposit in both eyes. Spectral domain optical coherence tomography images showed retinal crystals, locat

A distinction between conventional drusen and pseudodrusen was first made in 1990, and more recently knowledge of pseudodrusen, more accurately called subretinal drusenoid deposits (SDDs), has expanded. Pseudodrusen have a bluish-white appearance by biomicroscopy and color fundus photography. Using optical coherence tomography, pseudodrusen were found to be accumulations of material internal to the retinal pigment epithelium that could extend internally through the ellipsoid zone. These deposits are more commonly seen in older eyes with thinner choroids. Histologic evaluation of these deposits

Ischemia and hypoxia have been implicated in the pathophysiology of age related macular degeneration (AMD). This has mostly been based on studies on choroidal perfusion, which is not the only contributor to retinal hypoxia found in AMD eyes. Other features of AMD may also interfere with retinal oxygen metabolism including confluent drusen, serous or hemorrhagic retinal detachment, retinal edema and vitreoretinal adhesion. Each of these features contributes to retinal hypoxia: the drusen and retinal elevation by increasing the distance between the choriocapillaris and retina; vitreoretinal adhe

PURPOSE: To describe new software tools for quantifying optic nerve head drusen volume using 3-dimensional (3D) swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) volumetric scans.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: SS-OCT was used to acquire raster volume scans of 8 eyes of 4 patients with bilateral optic nerve head drusen. The scans were manually segmented by 3 graders to identify the drusen borders, and thereafter total drusen volumes were calculated. Linear regression was performed to study the relationships between drusen volume, retinal nerve fiber layer thickness, and Humphrey visual field mean de

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a condition of the eye that affects the aged people. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a diagnostic tool capable of analyzing and identifying the disease affected retinal layers with high resolution. The objective of this work is to extract the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) layer and the baseline (natural eye curvature, particular to every patient) from retinal spectral-domain OCT (SD-OCT) images. It uses them to find the height of drusen (abnormalities) in the RPE layer and classify it as AMD or normal.
METHODS: In th

Myelinated retinal nerve fibers are a well-recognized anomaly of the ocular fundus associated with many ocular and systemic conditions. Myelination is almost always congenital and stable, but progression has been documented in rare cases. Optic disk drusen are the result of a degenerative process at the optic nerve head and are often found incidentally on ophthalmologic examination. To our knowledge, optic disk drusen have only been reported once in association with acquired and progressive myelinated retinal nerve fibers. We present 2 such cases and consider the implications for the pathogene

Congenital abnormalities of the optic disc are not so rare. The etiology for the most of them is unknown. Visual acuity of affected eye may be minimally or severely affected, depending on the extent of lesion. All of these conditions can be unilateral or bilateral. Children who have unilateral optic disc abnormalities generally present during the preschool years with sensory esotropia. Visual acuity may be unaffected like in optic disc pit, optic disc drusen, fibre medullares, ect. However, during the evolution they may cause a decrease in visual acuity like serous retinal detachment in optic

Fifty-two eyes with drusen of the optic nerve head from the autopsy and surgical files of the Eye Pathology Laboratory of the Wilmer Institute from January 1967 through December 1975 were reviewed, and histochemical and electron microscopic studies performed. Histopathologic associations with the drusen included 19 eyes with associated optic nerve atrophy, 16 eyes with peripapillary crowding, one case involving prominent dilated vessels pushed aside by the drusen, and one eye with central retinal vein occlusion. Drusen appear to be composed predominantly of a mucoprotein matrix with significan

AMD is a major cause of legal blindness in older adults approachable through multidisciplinary research involving human tissues and patients. AMD is a vascular-metabolic-inflammatory disease, in which two sets of extracellular deposits, soft drusen/basal linear deposit (BLinD) and subretinal drusenoid deposit (SDD), confer risk for end-stages of atrophy and neovascularization. Understanding how deposits form can lead to insights for new preventions and therapy. The topographic correspondence of BLinD and SDD with cones and rods, respectively, suggest newly realized exchange pathways among oute

A retrospective study of autopsy and surgically enucleated eyes yielded eighteen autopsy and four surgically enucleated eyes harbouring drusen of the optic disc. The average age of the patients in this series was 58-6 years. Various histopathological changes were noted in the optic nerve head and adjacent retina; these comprised compression of nerve fibres, partial optic atrophy, elevation of the optic disc, cytoid bodies, disc haemorrhage, sequelae of haemorrhage, and juxtapapillary retinal scarring. All optic disc drusen were calcified and five of the ten disc drusen stained positively for t

PURPOSE: To examine spatial patterns of retinal sensitivity loss in the three key features of intermediate age-related macular degeneration (iAMD).
METHODS: One-hundred individuals (53 iAMD, 47 normal) underwent 10-2 mesopic microperimetry testing in one eye. Pointwise sensitivities (dB) were corrected for age, sex, iAMD status, and co-presence of co-localized key iAMD features: drusen load, pigmentary abnormalities, and reticular pseudodrusen (RPD). Clusters (labeled by ranks of magnitude C-2, C-1, C0) were derived from pointwise sensitivities and then assessed by quadrants and eccentricity/

Background/Objectives: Optical coherence tomography (OCT)-reflective drusen substructures (ODSs) are associated with the conversion of intermediate AMD to geographic atrophy (GA). However, ODSs must be manually identified, a laborious process introducing bias and variation. This study proposes objective radiomic metrics of drusen phenotypes and validates them for the prediction of GA development and GA growth rate. Methods: A total of 104 drusen with high-reflective cores (H-type), 105 with low-reflective cores (L-type), 129 conical drusen (C-type), and 101 normal drusen (N-type) were segmente

INTRODUCTION: Optic nerve head drusen are congenital calcium deposits located in the prelaminar section of the optic nerve head. Their association with visual field defects has been classically described, but the diagnosis of glaucoma is not easy in these cases of altered optic nerve head anatomy.
CASE STUDY: We describe the case of a 67-year-old man with optic nerve head drusen complicated by glaucoma, which was confirmed by visual field and OCT examination of the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), but the measurement of the minimum distance between the Bruch membrane opening an
