How do I manage an acute injury to the facial nerve?

Paralysis of the facial nerve is a cause of considerable functional and aesthetic disfigurement. Damage to the upper trunk can result in eye complications with the risk of exposure keratitis. Numerous factors influence the therapeutic strategy: the cause of the injury, the time elapsed since injury, functional impairment, and the likelihood of recovery. We discuss the management of an acute injury to the facial nerve and focus on the surgical options.

[Recovery of facial nerve function using sural nerve transplantation after its injury in acoustic nerve surgery].

INTRODUCTION: Statoacoustic n. neurinoma is a benign, slow-growing and usually unilateral tumor. During its growth the tumor exerts pressure on the surrounding anatomic forms within the pontocerebellar angle: cranial nerves, pons, cerebellum. Therefore the first clinical symptoms are ear buzzing and deafness, vision disorders, occipital headache or walking difficulties. The diagnosis of such conditions must be precise, whereas CT (computerized tomography) and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) are the methods of choice. Surgical tumor removal is the only therapy, but during surgery facial nerve

Expression Patterns of SMAD1-8 in the Peripheral Facial Nerve Following Compressive Nerve Injury or Axotomy.

Facial nerve injury can lead to significant functional impairment, emotional impacts, and difficulties in social and economic activities. Although peripheral nerves have the potential for recovery, incomplete regeneration can pose challenges. Suppressor of Mothers Against Decapentaplegic Homolog (SMAD) proteins are crucial in the nerve-regeneration process. The study aimed to investigate the changes in SMAD protein expression involved in peripheral nerve regeneration following facial nerve injury induced by compression or axotomy in a pre-clinical study conducted on Sprague Dawley rats. Facial

Effect of rocuronium on the level and mode of pre-synaptic acetylcholine release by facial and somatic nerves, and changes following facial nerve injury in rabbits.

Muscles innervated by the facial nerve show differential sensitivities to muscle relaxants than muscles innervated by somatic nerves. The evoked electromyography (EEMG) response is also proportionally reduced after facial nerve injury. This forms the theoretical basis for proper utilization of muscle relaxants to balance EEMG monitoring and immobility under general anesthesia. (1) To observe the relationships between the level and mode of acetylcholine (ACh) release and the duration of facial nerve injury, and the influence of rocuronium in an in vitro rabbit model. (2) To explore the pre-syna

An automated whisker tracking tool for the rat facial nerve injury paradigm.

BACKGROUND: The two-dimensional videographic analysis of vibrissal movements in behaving rodents has become a standard method to estimate the degree of functional impairment and recovery after facial nerve injuries quantitatively. The main limitation of the method is the time consuming, uneconomic process of manually tracking the vibrissae in video sequences. NEW METHOD: We developed a novel tool allowing automated detection of untagged vibrissae (two on each side of the snout). To compare the new method with the standard manual tracking approach, we used videos of unrestrained rats with unil

Current state of stem cell-mediated therapies for facial nerve injury.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Interest in the application of stem cell therapy to nerve injury has grown exponentially in recent years, as the armamentarium of potential stem cell sources has increased. This article reviews literature on the recent developments in the application of stem cell therapy for facial nerve injury. RECENT FINDINGS: Current stem cell therapy for the treatment of peripheral nerve injury can be generalized into those that either enhance native neural regeneration via an anti-inflammatory effect or growth factor secretion, replace Schwann cells, or replace motor neurons. Animal st

Facial nerve axotomy in mice: a model to study motoneuron response to injury.

The goal of this surgical protocol is to expose the facial nerve, which innervates the facial musculature, at its exit from the stylomastoid foramen and either cut or crush it to induce peripheral nerve injury. Advantages of this surgery are its simplicity, high reproducibility, and the lack of effect on vital functions or mobility from the subsequent facial paralysis, thus resulting in a relatively mild surgical outcome compared to other nerve injury models. A major advantage of using a cranial nerve injury model is that the motoneurons reside in a relatively homogenous population in the faci
