Effect of Monofocal, Wavefront-Shaped, and Diffractive Trifocal Intraocular Lenses on Scanning-Slit Automated Refraction.

PURPOSE: To compare scanning-slit retinoscopy automated refraction spherical equivalent (ARSE) to subjective manifest refraction spherical equivalent (MRSE) in normal eyes with four different types of intraocular lenses (IOLs). DESIGN: Retrospective cross-sectional study. METHODS: A total of 279 pseudophakic eyes that underwent lens extraction at a private center with implantation of either a wavefront shaped IOL (Acrysof® Vivity, DFT015), a nonapodized diffractive trifocal IOL (Acrysof® Panoptix), or a monofocal IOL with negative spherical aberration (Tecnis ZCBOO) or aberration-free (Envis

Comparison of cycloplegia with atropine 1% versus cyclopentolate 1.

PURPOSE: Cycloplegic refraction is mandatory for children to know the eye's refractive status. In this study, we compared cycloplegia induced by cyclopentolate 1% to that induced by atropine 1% by means of retinoscopy. METHODS: In this parallel-designed interventional study, we included 67 children aged between 4 and 17 years. After the initial retinoscopy under cyclopentolate 1% (used twice in each eye), we repeated it a week later under atropine ointment 1% (used twice a day for 3 days); both were done by the same trained optometrist masked to the drug. Each eye's refraction was converted t

A comparison of sutureless flanged fixation and 4-point Gore-Tex fixation for scleral-fixated intraocular lenses: a pilot study.

PURPOSE: Scleral-fixation of intraocular lenses (IOLs) provides an option for eyes that lack sufficient capsular support for in-the-bag IOL placement. The latest techniques for lens fixation include use of a novel suture material, Gore-Tex, and a sutureless method, with flanged intrascleral fixation. The purpose of this pilot study was to compare these methods in terms of anatomic and clinical outcomes. METHODS: A total of 35 eyes of patients 18-60 years of age who presented with aphakia, subluxated lens, or ectopia lentis were randomized into two groups. Group A (15 eyes) underwent flanged i

Refractive error changes and associated asthenopia observed after COVID-19 infection: Case reports from two continents.

COVID-19 infection has been linked to various ocular complications and complaints, but not to refractive errors. In this case report, we present ethnically diverse patients who reported asthenopic symptoms shortly after recovering from COVID-19 infection. The hyperopic shift in the refractive error, post-COVID could indicate the ciliary body muscle's inability to sustain accommodation, resulting in asthenopia. Hence, refractive errors should also be considered as a post-COVID complication, even if the magnitude is small, especially when patients have a headache and other asthenopic symptoms. P

Wavefront analysis to diagnose blunt trauma-induced Weigert ligament dialysis: Isolated peripheral posterior lenticonus.

A 15-year-old male patient presented with vision loss after blunt trauma to the right eye and with clinical evidence of posterior lenticonus. The posttraumatic lenticonus was eccentric (superotemporal). Irregular astigmatism with high myopia on dilated retinoscopy within the lenticonus, localized posterior convexity of peripheral capsule on ultrasound biomicroscopy, and increased higher-order aberrations (HOAs) on wavefront aberrometry compared with fellow-eye findings confirmed the diagnosis. To our knowledge, acquired peripheral posterior lenticonus representing dialysis of Weigert ligament

[Prescribing spectacles to children].

Refractive errors are the most common visual problem in children apart from squinting. Indications for spectacles include amblyopia prophylaxis and treatment, strabismus, myopia and reading disorders. Objective refraction by retinoscopy is the central part of prescribing spectacles to children. A slight under correction (maximum of 0.5 dpt in cases with and 1.0 dpt without squint) can be considered in hyperopia only. Myopia, astigmatism and anisometropia must be fully corrected. Any prescription must mention "MA=PD" and "plastic lenses" as well as "high bifocal" if needed. Information to the p

Accuracy of Noncycloplegic Refraction for Detecting Refractive Errors in School-aged African Children.

SIGNIFICANCE: Cycloplegia is often restricted in screening settings. Previous studies have evaluated noncycloplegic refraction for screening, but their data are not fully applicable to school-aged African children. This article adds to the literature by investigating this in school-aged African children. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of noncycloplegic autorefraction (NCA) and noncycloplegic retinoscopy (NCR) to detect refractive errors in school-aged African children and quantify differences between noncycloplegic and cycloplegic refraction measures. METHODS:

Refractive outcome of prethreshold retinopathy of prematurity treated by diode laser: follow-up at 5 years.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the refraction of eyes treated with diode laser photocoagulation for prethreshold retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) at a mean of 5 years after treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty infants with prethreshold ROP treated with diode laser at Hanoi Childrens' Hospital during the period 2008 to 2009 were reviewed. Refractive error was identified by cycloplegic refraction with Cyclogyl 1%. Myopia was divided into two categories based on magnitude: high myopia (more than -5.00 D) and low myopia (between 0 and -5.00 D). Hypermetropia was subdivid

The rat with oxygen-induced retinopathy is myopic with low retinal dopamine.

PURPOSE: Dopamine (DA) is a neurotransmitter implicated both in modulating neural retinal signals and in eye growth. Therefore, it may participate in the pathogenesis of the most common clinical sequelae of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), visual dysfunction and myopia. Paradoxically, in ROP myopia the eye is usually small. The eye of the rat with oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR) is characterized by retinal dysfunction and short axial length. There have been several investigations of the early maturation of DA in rat retina, but little at older ages, and not in the OIR rat. Therefore, DA, ret

Pseudo-false positive eye/vision photoscreening due to accommodative insufficiency. A serendipitous benefit for poor readers?

BACKGROUND: Children whose eyes and vision are otherwise normal and who should screen negatively as normals, but who fail to compensate for their normal mild hyperopia (i.e. by normally accommodating, or rather actually failing to accommodate) will generate hyperopic crescents in a photoscreen test that can be interpreted as "positive" (for pathology) because high and asymmetric levels of hyperopia are common risk factors for amblyopia. This would therefore usually be considered a "false positive" and no further care would be offered. However, this failure to compensate, may in fact be a patho

Diagnostic Validity of Accommodative Tests for Screening Suspected Accommodative Excess in Adolescents.

PURPOSE: Accommodative excess (AE) is characterised by an excessive accommodative response (lead) and impaired ability to relax accommodation, typically accompanied by asthenopic symptoms and reduced visual comfort during near tasks. Although AE is frequently observed in clinical practice, its definition and diagnostic criteria remain inconsistent, and the diagnostic performance of commonly used clinical tests is not well established. This study examined the diagnostic validity of tests evaluating the accommodative response and relaxation to detect suspected AE in a non-clinical adolescent pop

Children's Eye Screening South Australia (CESSA): diagnostic performance of a vision screening programme for 7-9-year-olds.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Standardised paediatric vision screening programmes enable timely detection of refractive errors and other amblyopia risk factors. School-based programmes that use appropriate referral thresholds for distance visual acuity, combined with photorefraction, can improve detection of amblyopia and refractive errors in children. BACKGROUND: The Children's Eye Screening South Australia study evaluated the performance of a vision screening protocol for detecting common vision disorders in a school-based sample of children aged 7-9 years, while characterising prevalent vision condi

Corneal power and astigmatism in Down syndrome.

PURPOSE: Corneal and crystalline lens shape differ in Down syndrome (DS) compared with developmentally normal populations. This study specifically explored the association between corneal curvature and refractive error for the first time in DS. METHODS: Participants were 29 children with 59 age-matched controls (33 males and 35 females; mean age 12.4 +/- 1.8 years) and DS (9 to 16 years; 19 males and 10 females; mean age 12.8 +/- 1.9 years). Corneal curvature was measured using a hand-held keratometer. Refractive error was assessed by distance static retinoscopy in the control group and Mohin

[Refraction after Implantation of Multifocal and Presbyopia-Correcting Intraocular Lenses].

Nowadays, further developments in the field of intraocular lenses offer a higher level of spectacle independence for our patients. As light gets scattered on different focal points a wider range of defocus is created. This greater defocus area makes it more difficult for us to determine the objective or subjective refraction. This contribution is concerned with the difficulties of measuring visual acuity in different intraocular lens designs and different measurement distances. Measuring refraction after implantation of a multifocal intraocular lens is a complex procedure and the experience of
