Specific learning difficulties: a retrospective study of their co morbidity and continuity as early indicators of mental disorders.

BACKGROUND: Specific Learning difficulties constitute a continuity of complex disorders, which unfold across the lifespan and are associated with a wide range of mental disorders. In order to determine the importance of specific learning difficulties as an underlying factor in various mental disorders, we investigated associations between mental disorders and factors related to learning difficulties, poor family and school environment, and social and psycho-emotional disorders. METHODS: This retrospective study is based on data from 835 case histories of adults who were treated at the Psychia

Neurodevelopmental and psychiatric comorbidities of children and adolescents with specific learning disorders: associations with gender and educational level.

BACKGROUND: Specific Learning Disorders (SLDs) are among the most common neurodevelopmental conditions, affecting not only academic performance but also a child's daily functioning and overall well-being. Alongside their learning difficulties, many young people with SLDs show a greater vulnerability to emotional and behavioural problems. Although these issues are increasingly recognised, much of the available research still relies on screening questionnaires rather than structured diagnostic assessments, focuses mainly on SLDs with impairment in reading, or is based on small samples. In additi

Teacher Personality Predicts Emotional Well-Being and Academic Achievement in Students with Specific Learning Disorders.

Background/Objectives: Students with specific learning disorders (SLDs) are at increased risk for emotional and academic difficulties. While teacher characteristics can influence student outcomes, few studies have examined the role of teacher personality in supporting students with SLDs. This study investigated whether teacher personality traits predicted student emotional well-being and academic achievement in a school-based intervention context. Methods: Participants were 64 students with SLDs (Mage = 13.28) nested within 21 teachers. Students completed measures of emotional well-being at ba

Epigenetic signature of GOMAFU, MALAT1, NEAT1 lncRNAs in children with specific learning disorders: expression differences.

Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by significant difficulties in reading, writing, or mathematics, despite normal intellectual functioning. Emerging evidence suggests that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), which are transcripts longer than 200 nucleotides, play critical roles in neural development and cognitive function. This study aimed to investigate the differential expression of three lncRNAs long intergenic non-protein coding RNA 66 (GOMAFU), long intergenic non-protein coding RNA 47 (MALAT1), and nuclear paraspeckle assembly transcript (NEAT1)

Recognition of Japanese kanji words in children with specific learning disorders: a preliminary study using magnetoencephalography.

INTRODUCTION: In Western countries, reading disorders are believed to be caused by phonological processing problems. Conversely, Japanese children with developmental dyslexia (DD) and developmental dysgraphia often have difficulty learning kanji that are ideographic characters. It is believed that kanji learning and alphabet learning have different pathologies, as the latter uses phonetic character. In this study, we aimed to clarify the characteristics of kanji word recognition in Japanese children with DD and developmental dysgraphia using magnetoencephalography with high spatial resolution.

Executive functions in children with specific learning disorders: Shedding light on a complex profile through teleassessment.

Executive Functions (EFs) are high-order cognitive processes relevant to learning and adaptation and frequently impaired in children with specific learning disorders (SLDs). This study aimed to investigate EFs in children with SLD and explore the role of specific EF-related subprocesses, such as stimuli processing and processing speed. Fifty-seven SLD and 114 typically developing (TD) children, matched for gender and age, completed four tasks measuring response inhibition, interference control, shifting, and updating on a web-based teleassessment platform. The results show that SLD children pe

The discrepancy between verbal and visuoperceptual IQ in children with a specific learning disorder: An analysis of 1624 cases.

Children with a specific learning disorder (SLD) are often characterized by marked intellectual strengths and weaknesses. In the last few years, research has focused on a common discrepancy between low working memory and processing speed on the one hand, and high verbal and visuoperceptual intelligence on the other. SLD profiles featuring a specific discrepancy between verbal and visuoperceptual abilities have been only marginally considered, however, and their systematic comparison vis-à-vis typically-developing (TD) populations has yet to be conducted. The present study examined a dataset of

Mediating role of self-concept on character strengths and well-being among adolescents with specific learning disorder in India.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) are at higher risk of academic underachievement, stigmatization, and mental health issues. However, the complete elimination of disorder-related deficits and external challenges is an impracticable solution for enhancing their well-being. AIM: The study adopts a strength-based approach to understand the role of an innate factor, i.e., self-concept, in the association between character strengths and well-being of adolescents with SLD. METHODS: A correlational research design following a mediation analysis was adopted to examine the

Investigation of Association Between Expression of DYX1C1, KIAA0319, and ROBO1 Genes and Specific Learning Disorder in Children and Adolescents.

Specific learning disorder (SLD) is prevalent worldwide and is a complex disorder with variable symptoms and significant differences among individuals. Epigenetic markers may alter susceptibility to neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). Aberrant expression of protein-coding (mRNA) genes in this pathology shows that the detection of epigenetic molecular biomarkers is of increasing importance in the diagnosis and treatment of individuals with SLD. We compared gene expression level of dyslexia susceptibility 1 candidate gene 1 (DYX1C1), dyslexia-associated protein KIAA0319 (KIAA0319), and roundabo

Challenges in higher education: Differences between students with and without specific learning disorder and the moderating role of executive functions.

Students with Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) face difficulties not only in academic skills but also in the social, emotional, and executive function (EF) domains. These challenges may increase vulnerability to rumination-a repetitive and maladaptive focus on distress, which is strongly linked to emotional difficulties. This study explores differences in academic, social, emotional, and EF challenges between students with and without SLD and investigates whether these challenges moderate the relationship between SLD and rumination. A sample of 95 college students (46 with SLD, 49 without SLD
