The influence of postural control on toe clearance during stair negotiation in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Aging interferes with postural control in older adults and affects their functional ability to perform daily activities, like walking and stair negotiation. As a result, older adults tend to have less toe clearance in relation to the step during stair negotiation, which is reflected in a greater risk of falling. However, there is no evidence of influence of postural control on toe clearance performance during stair negotiation in older adults. RESEARCH QUESTION: Does the performance of postural control influence toe clearance behavior during stair negotiation in older adults? MET

Measuring femoral neck loads in healthy young and older adults during stair ascent and descent.

Understanding the hip loading environment for daily activities is useful for hip fracture prevention, rehabilitation, and the design of osteogenic exercises. Seventeen older adults (50-70 yrs) and twenty young adults (18-30 yrs) were recruited. A rigid body model combined with a musculoskeletal model was used to estimate lower extremity loading. An elliptical cross-section model of the femoral neck was used to estimate femoral neck stress during stair ascent and descent. Two peaks were identified in the stress curves, corresponding to the peaks in the vertical ground reaction force. During sta

Should we consider steps with variable height for a safer stair negotiation in older adults?

BACKGROUND: Effects of exercise on foot clearances are important. In older adults variations in foot clearances during walking may lead to a fall, but there is a lack of information concerning stair negotiation in older adults. Whether a condition of post exercise changes foot clearances between steps of a staircase in older adults still unknown. OBJECTIVE: To determine differences in clearances when older adults negotiate different steps of a staircase before and after a session of aerobic exercise. METHODS: Kinematics data from 30 older adults were acquired and the toe and heel clearances

Biomechanical analysis of trunk and lower limbs during stair activity in patients with scoliosis.

Staircases are a frequently encountered obstacle in daily life, requiring individuals to navigate ascending and descending movements that place additional demands on the trunk and lower limbs compared to walking on level surfaces. Therefore, it is crucial to examine the biomechanical characteristics of the trunk and lower limbs in individuals with scoliosis during stair activity. The aim of this study was to investigate the biomechanical differences in trunk and lower limbs during daily stair activities between patients with scoliosis and a healthy population. Additionally, the study aimed to

Paralysis of the gastrocnemius medial head differentially affects gait patterns and muscle activity during level and stair ascent locomotion.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies have analyzed the activity of the gastrocnemius (GCM) medial and lateral heads as a single unit because it is technically challenging to separately analyze the function of each component in vivo. However, functional variation between the medial and lateral heads is expected due to their anatomical differences. RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the independent function of the medial GCM? How does paralysis of the GCM medial head affect gait kinematics?. METHODS: Twelve healthy adults (two males and ten females; age: 28.2 [±7.72] years) that were scheduled to undergo neuroly
