Midline denture base strains of glass fiber-reinforced single implant-supported overdentures.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The fracture incidence of implant-supported overdentures is more frequent in the area of attachment because of stress concentration and denture deformation in this area. How E-glass fiber reinforcement can address this problem is unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the influence of unidirectional E-glass fiber reinforcement on the mid-line denture base strains of single implant-supported overdentures. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An experimental acrylic resin cast was constructed with a single implant placed in the mid-line area and a ball atta

[Allergies to cosmetics].

The protean clinical delayed hypersensitivity reactions or the less common immediate hypersensitivity reactions can raise major diagnostic challenges, particularly as sensitisation can occur directly, indirectly or from a distance, with the allergen being handborne, airborne, or transmitted vicariously. Identification of the offending allergen among the vast array of potential candidates requires an exhaustive evaluation. The most common offenders are fragrances, which are ubiquitous, being found in a host of known or occult sources preservatives, hair dyes, excipient component, formaldehyde r

In Vitro Comparison of Polymerization Techniques on the Strength and Hardness of Denture Base Resins.

PURPOSE: Acrylic dentures fabricated using polymethyl methacrylate are subjected to either intraoral fatigue stress or extraoral impact stress, eventually forming microcracks and fractures. This limitation should be overcome by either modification in the acrylic resin material or in polymerization techniques. This study compares the impact strength and flexural strength of high-impact resin to conventional resin in short- and long-heat polymerization settings. METHODOLOGY: The in vitro study design adopted a comparison of two groups of acrylic resin specimens, conventional and high-impact res

Reconstruction of Orbital Walls with Bone Cement in a Maxillectomy Patient.

Orbital wall defects occur because of trauma and secondary to oncologic surgery. Reconstruction of orbital bones is of most importance to ensure normal eye functions and cosmesis. Acrylic resin materials can be used instead of a bone in orbital wall defects that are secondary to the resection of tumors invading the orbita. Polymethyl methacrylate is one of the acrylic resin materials. In this study, the orbital wall reconstruction technique with bone cement after maxillectomy and results are reported.

Closed hollow bulb obturator--one-step fabrication: a clinical report.

A method is described for the fabrication of a closed hollow bulb obturator prosthesis using a hard thermoforming splint material and heat-cured acrylic resin. The technique allowed the thickness of the thermoformed bulb to be optimized for weight reduction, while the autopolymerized seal area was covered in heat-cured acrylic resin, thus eliminating potential leakage and discoloration. This technique permits the obturator prosthesis to be processed to completion from the wax trial denture without additional laboratory investing, flasking, and processing.
