Dopamine transporter imaging in adult patients with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

The aim of this study was to provide in vivo evidence for the hypothesis that dopaminergic neurotransmission is altered in adult patients with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We used high-resolution brain-dedicated single-photon emission computed tomography and the dopamine transporter (DAT) marker [(123)I]FP-CIT in 17 adult treatment-naïve ADHD patients and 14 age-matched controls. Magnetic resonance imaging-based region of interest analysis was performed to quantify the DAT availability (expressed as a ratio of specific to non-displaceable binding, V(3)'') in the striatum. A

Association of tobacco and lead exposures with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The study objective was to determine the independent and joint associations of prenatal tobacco and childhood lead exposures with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), as defined by current diagnostic criteria, in a national sample of US children. METHODS: Data are from the 2001-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, a cross-sectional, nationally representative sample of the US population. Participants were 8 to 15 years of age (N = 2588). Prenatal tobacco exposure was measured by report of maternal cigarette use during pregnancy. Lead exposure was assess

Borderline typical symptoms in adult patients with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Adult attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) share several clinical features, e.g. emotional lability and impulsivity. This study aimed to delineate differences and similarities between ADHD and BPD with respect to borderline typical symptomatology and gender specifics. Borderline symptomatology was assessed in 60 adult patients with ADHD with the borderline symptom list (BSL) and compared to both 60 gender- and age-matched BPD patients and control subjects. The BSL is a standardized instrument including 95 items on 7 subscales (self-perceptio

Neuroimaging of tic disorders with co-existing attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Tourette syndrome (TS) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are common and debilitating neuropsychiatric illnesses that typically onset in the preschool years. Recently, both conditions have been subject to neuroimaging studies, with the aim of understanding their underlying neurobiological correlates. OBJECTIVE: The relation of TS and ADHD is discussed against the background of findings from previous Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) studies. METHODS: We review the designs and major findings of previous studies that have examined TS with comorbid ADHD, and we brief

The prevalence of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder among persons with albinism.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common diagnosis in children and adults. Human albinism is an uncommon genetic condition associated with visual impairment that may affect behavior. To determine if there is a relationship between albinism and ADHD, the prevalence of ADHD was examined among 78 children (age range, 4-18 years) and among 44 adults (age range, 19-79 years) with ocular or oculocutaneous albinism. ADHD was diagnosed in the pediatric population using a combination of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Fourth Edition) criteria, Conners' Parent R

Diagnosing attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in patients with substance use disorders.

Diagnosing attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults can be complicated by several factors including the inability to meet appropriate developmental criteria as listed in the DSM-IV. The stringent DSM-IV criteria for ADHD may make diagnosing ADHD in adults difficult, which may lead to an underdiagnosis of ADHD in the adult population. Clinicians must rely on the diagnosis of ADHD not otherwise specified for adults with ADHD symptomatology, but this category does not provide clear delineations for patients whose symptoms vary within this category. Further complications arise due

[Learning difficulties in mathematics in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder].

INTRODUCTION: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and learning difficulties are two diagnostic categories of great social importance and impact, and which are associated in around 25-35% of cases. One explanation offered by researchers to account for this overlap is a deficit in executive functioning (EF). AIMS: 1) To compare EF and applied mathematical knowledge in children with ADHD, difficulties in learning mathematics (DLM) or ADHD + DLM, and to identify the deficiencies they experience. 2) To verify whether the phenotype hypothesis is fulfilled in the case of the ADHD + DLM c

Sleep and sleep disorders in adults with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a frequent disorder that often persists in adulthood. Persistent ADHD is known to be a serious risk factor for other disorders in adulthood, and adults with ADHD often report on sleep disorders. Despite this, only few studies have investigated the subjective and objective quality of sleep in adults suffering from ADHD. Previous studies have revealed seriously impaired subjective sleep quality and increased nocturnal motor activity in spite of essentially normal standard polysomnographic parameters in this patient group. However, primary sleep

Sleep quality in adult patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Sleep disorders are common in adults with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Two sleep questionnaires; the Brown ADD Scale, the Symptom-Checklist-90-R, and a self-developed symptom questionnaire were administered in this study. In a sample of 61 patients without comorbidity, current substance abuse and medication intake, sleep problems were reported more often than in healthy controls. A lack of being refreshed in the morning was very closely associated with ADHD symptomatology whereas insomnia was related to the presence of comorbidity and depressive symptoms. In the total sampl

Processing speed in children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, inattentive type.

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is among the most common and most often reconceptualized neurobehavioral disorders of childhood. In the most recent DSM-IV, a primarily inattentive subtype of ADHD (AD) has again been identified. This study explores the neuropsychological profile of this group of children. Eighty-two children referred for school-related problems participated. Twenty-five met criteria for AD; 52 met criteria for reading disability (RD); 9 were comorbid for RD and AD. AD children performed poorly on measures of information processing speed. Children with comorbid A

Essential fatty acid metabolism in boys with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the term used to describe children who are inattentive, impulsive, and hyperactive. The cause is unknown and is thought to be multifactorial. Based on the work of others, we hypothesized that some children with ADHD have altered fatty acid metabolism. The present study found that 53 subjects with ADHD had significantly lower concentrations of key fatty acids in the plasma polar lipids (20:4n-6, 20:5n-3, and 22:6n-3) and in red blood cell total lipids (20:4n-6 and 22:4n-6) than did the 43 control subjects. Also, a subgroup of 21 subjects with A

Increasing Prevalence of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Patients With Borderline Personality Disorder.

While research has shown that the prevalence of ADHD in the general population has increased over time, there have been no studies focused on ADHD prevalence in patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD). This study compares two cohorts of adults with rigorously diagnosed BPD recruited nearly three decades apart (1992 vs. 2020). Participants from the 1992 McLean Study of Adult Development (MSAD) (N = 290) and the 2020 Flourishing study (N = 147) were assessed for ADHD using DSM-III-R and DSM-5 criteria respectively. Compared to MSAD subjects, the prevalence of ADHD among Flourishing s

Fronto-striatal glutamate in children with Tourette's disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Both Tourette's disorder (TD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have been related to abnormalities in glutamatergic neurochemistry in the fronto-striatal circuitry. TD and ADHD often co-occur and the neural underpinnings of this co-occurrence have been insufficiently investigated in prior studies. METHOD: We used proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) in children between 8 and 12 years of age (TD n = 15, ADHD n = 39, TD + ADHD n = 29, and healthy controls n = 53) as an in vivo method of evaluating glutamate concentrations in the fronto-striatal circuit. Prevalence of bipolar disorder in children and adolescents with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Some research suggests that children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have a higher than expected risk of bipolar affective disorder. No study has examined the prevalence of bipolar disorder in a UK sample of children with ADHD. AIMS: To examine the prevalence of bipolar disorder in children diagnosed with ADHD or hyperkinetic disorder. METHOD: Psychopathology symptoms and diagnoses of bipolar disorder were assessed in 200 young people with ADHD (170 male, 30 female; age 6-18 years, mean 11.15, s.d. = 2.95). Rates of current bipolar disorder symptoms and diagn

Sleep patterns in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, tic disorder, and comorbidity.

BACKGROUND: In children, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), tic disorder (TD), and their coexistence (ADHD + TD comorbidity) are very common and clinically important. Associated sleep patterns and their clinical role are still insufficiently investigated. This study aimed at characterizing these sleep patterns in children with ADHD, TD, and ADHD + TD comorbidity and determining whether, in ADHD + TD, the factors ADHD and TD may affect the sleep pattern in an independent (additive) or in a complex (interactive) manner. METHOD: By means of polysomnography, sleep patterns were inve

Neurologic examination abnormalities in children with bipolar disorder or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and bipolar disorder (BPD) are frequently comorbid and overlapping diagnoses. To move beyond diagnosis toward unique pathophysiology, we evaluated both ADHD and BPD children for neurologic examination abnormalities (NEAs) in comparison with normal control (NC) children. METHODS: We performed the Revised Physical and Neurological Examination for Soft Signs in three groups (ADHD, BPD, NC). Then, a rater blind to diagnosis evaluated their motor performance. Results were analyzed with a multiple analysis of covariance. RESULTS: Subjects

Serum TSH Levels are Associated with Hyperactivity Behaviors in Children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies indicated that maternal thyroid dysfunction increase the offspring's risk for attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, the relationship between thyroid function and symptoms in children with ADHD remains unclear. METHODS: A total of 49 children with ADHD were enrolled. The Conners 3 scale was used to estimate the symptoms associated with ADHD. Correlation between thyroid hormones and the scores of the Conners 3 scale was evaluated by Pearson correlation analysis. Then, ADHD children were divided into two groups according to the hyperactivity index
