Ectopia cordis is an extremely rare cardiac anomaly. The heart is localized partially or totally outside the thorax cavity. This anomaly occurs as an isolated defect or combined with others midline defects. Cantrell and colleagues described, in 1958, a syndrome including defects of the abdominal wall, sternum, diaphragm, pericardium and heart. There are few successful surgical cases with this pentalogy. We describe a case with this Cantrell's pentalogy. The cardiac malformation was a univentricular heart with pulmonary stenosis. The patient underwent successful surgical palliation with a syste

We present the case of a 28-h-old female infant born at 37 weeks of gestation with a rare congenital malformation consisting of a pentad of findings: ectopia cordis, a midline supraumbilical wall defect, a defect of the lower sternum, absent pericardium, and an anterior diaphragmatic defect. This constellation of defects is known as the pentalogy of Cantrell. Additional autopsy findings included a bilateral cleft lip and palate, bilateral pulmonary hypoplasia, an atrial septal defect, and a patent ductus arteriosus. We present this case because of its rarity and discuss the pathologic findings

A case is described in which it was found at autopsy that the umbilical cord of a macerated stillborn infant had four patent vessels (two arteries and two veins) throughout its length. This was due to a rare persistence of the caudal portion of the right umbilical vein. The infant had multiple congenital anomalies including complete thoracic ectopia cordis, a symmetrical bifid liver, severe bilateral cleft lip and palate with absent soft palate and uvula , and cecum mobile. The autopsy findings are detailed and the relevant literature and embryology briefly discussed.

We report about the prenatal diagnosis of pentalogy of Cantrell in the third trimester. In this case sonographic evaluation revealed mild form of ectopia cordis, severe omphalocele, small meningomyelocele, mild hydrocephalus, severe polyhydramnios and allantoic cyst of the umbilical cord. The pregnancy was terminated by a caesarean section at 35 weeks of pregnancy because of severe polyhydramnios. The neonate died shortly after delivery and the obduction confirmed the diagnosis of pentalogy of Cantrell. We discuss the reason of the late prenatal diagnosis in this case, the importance of early

INTRODUCTION: The Genetic Branch of the Chilean Society of Paediatrics, given the draft Law governing the decriminalisation of abortion on three grounds, focusing on the second ground, which considers the "embryo or foetus suffering from a congenital structural anomaly or a genetic disorder incompatible with life outside the womb", met to discuss the scientific evidence according to which congenital anomalies (CA) may be included in this draft law.
METHODOLOGY: Experts in clinical genetics focused on 10 CA, reviewed the literature evidence, and met to discuss it.
RESULTS: It was agreed not t

The Pentalogy of Cantrell is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by defects in the closing of the supraumbilical abdominal wall, in the anterior portion of the diaphragm, in the diaphragmatic pericardium, ectopia cordis, and intracardiac defects. It may be associated to other anomalies determining the variants of this syndrome. The prenatal ultrasound diagnosis is extremely important for detecting structural malformations and for postnatal surgical planning, when possible. We present a case of Pentalogy of Cantrell diagnosed in the 34th week of gestation, showing the main findings by two-d

This article reviews congenital cardiac anomalies in cattle, including ventricular septal defects, transposition of the great vessels, Tetralogy of Fallot, and ectopia cordis. It emphasizes the importance of detailed postmortem examinations and careful sample preservation for diagnosing these defects, which may result from genetic, nutritional, infectious, or environmental factors. Recognizing subtle lesions and understanding their physiologic impacts are crucial for accurate diagnosis. The article highlights the value of breed resources and genetic testing in managing heritable conditions. Ov

BACKGROUND: In 1958, Cantrell etal. described a rare syndrome in neonates. The description of the syndrome was characterized by a midline supraumbilical defect encompassing a thoracoabdominal omphalocele and ectopia cordis, a defect of the lower sternum, ventral diaphragmatic and pericardial defects, and other congenital cardiac anomalies.
CLINICAL CASES: 4 neonates with the uncommon Cantrell's pentalogy were seen in our hospital within a 5-year period without having any apparent factor in common. This paper describes the clinical course and surgical correction.
CONCLUSIONS: Early detection

This is a study of different severe fetal body wall defects and other abnormalities which were observed by transvaginal ultrasonography in six fetuses at 11 4/7 to 15 weeks' gestation. The main abnormalities were acrania, kyphoscoliosis, neural tube defect, ectopia cordis, diaphragmatic hernia, and ventral wall defect with exstrophy of the intestine, liver, and kidneys. A normal amniotic sac was noted in three cases. In one case, the amniotic sac could not be defined and in the other two cases, some of the abdominal contents were located outside the amniotic sac. The possible aetiology of thes

BACKGROUND: Pentalogy of Cantrell is a rare syndrome, first described by Cantrell and co-workers in 1958. The syndrome is characterized by the presence of five major congenital defects involving the diaphragm, abdominal wall, the diaphragmatic pericardium, lower sternum and various congenital intra-cardiac abnormalities. The syndrome has never been reported in Tanzania, although may have been reported from other African countries. Survival rate of the complete form of pentalogy of Cantrell is as low as 20%, but recent studies have reported normal growth achieved by 6 years of age where correct

Pentalogy of Cantrell (PC) is a congenital anomaly characterized by a defect in the lower sternum, anterior diaphragm, and anterior abdominal wall; ectopia cordis; and congenital heart disease. It is a very rare congenital anomaly and the prenatal diagnosis is possible in the beginning of second trimester of pregnancy using the conventional ultrasonography. The prognosis is poor with high rates of perinatal mortality. We present a case report of prenatal diagnosis of PC at 22 weeks and 3 days of gestation. We emphasize the prenatal care follow up in a tertiary reference center, the parental co

The characteristic features of the Cantrell-sequence--anterior thoraco-abdominal wall defect with ectopia cordis and diaphragm, sternum, pericardium, and heart defects--have been observed in animals following maternal administration of beta-aminopropionitrile, a toxic amino-acid derivative. We report on an unusual case of the Cantrell-sequence in a premature infant with associated dysmelia, aplasia of the right kidney, cerebellar hypoplasia and circumscribed aplasia of the cutis, which has not been reported previously. Maternal history suggested an occupational exposure to aminopropionitriles

Embryofetoscopy is an endoscopic technique that permits a direct visualization and morphologic study of embryos during the first and early second trimester. We report the early prenatal diagnosis of a case of Pentalogy of Cantrell combining data obtained by 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional ultrasonography and embryofetoscopy. Morphologic examination focused on a large omphalocele protruding from the anterior abdominal wall as an oval pulsating mass, measuring approximately 3 cm. The visualization of an omphalocele with ectopia cordis without other malformations confirmed the diagnosis of Pental

Pentalogy of Cantrell compiles the union of five anomalies including defects of the midline abdominal wall, lower sternum, anterior diaphragm, diaphragmatic pericardium, and any form of intra-cardiac pathology 1. The intra-cardiac defects associated commonly are ventricular septal defects, followed by atrial septal defects, Tetralogy of Fallot, and pulmonary stenosis 2. It is also a rare syndrome with an estimated incidence of 1:65,000 to 200,000 live births.3 4 Here in we present a case of a 4-year-old male patient, diagnosed with Pentalogy of Cantrel was referred to our institute with chief

Here, the authors report a case of Cantrell's syndrome which was diagnosed by ultrasound at 12th week of pregnancy and confirmed by autopsy. Cantrell syndrome/pentalogy is defined as congenital combination of five main distinctive components: defects at the lower part of the sternum, anterior diaphragm, midline supraumbilical abdominal wall, diaphragmatic pericardium, and ectopia cordis. In the present case, in addition to these anomalies, there was cleft palate and cleft lip at the midline. Association of cleft lip and palate with Cantrell's syndrome may be due to the extension of defective m

Two cases of sternal cleft not associated with ectopia cordis are presented. An 11-year-old girl with a superior incomplete sternal cleft underwent reconstruction of the sternum with autologous rib, cartilage, and sternal periosteum. At the 1-year follow-up her sternal appearance was normal. The second patient, a full-term baby girl, had complete sternal cleft diagnosed by ultrasonography at 21 weeks' gestation. She underwent primary repair in the neonatal period and currently is asymptomatic with a normal-appearing sternum (10 months postoperatively). Primary repair in the neonatal period is

Two unrelated cases of conjoined twins were found to have cardiac malformations that apparently have not been reported previously. In one case, thoracopagus twins had an extensive thoracoabdominal wall defect that resulted in ectopia cordis of a conjoined heart along with evisceration of the shared liver and intestine along with one spleen. These malformations, accompanied by defects in the sternum, diaphragm, and supraumbilical abdominal wall, constitute a conjoined pentalogy of Cantrell. In the second case, the heart of one of omphalopagus twins consisted of a solid ventricular mass with onl

Ventral folding morphogenesis (VFM), a vital morphogenetic process in amniotes, mediates gut endoderm internalization, linear heart tube formation, ventral body wall closure and encasement of the fetus in extraembryonic membranes. Aberrant VFM underlies a number of birth defects such as gastroschisis and ectopia cordis in human and misplacement of head and heart in mouse. Recent cell lineage-specific mouse mutant analyses identified the Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMP) pathway and Anterior Visceral Endoderm (AVE) as key regulators of anterior VFM. Loss of BMP2 expression solely from embryonic

Abdominal wall defects include a broad spectrum of structural malformations with variable severity and prognosis. The purpose of prenatal ultrasound examination is to correctly diagnose and classify these malformations according to their localization (particularly their relation to the umbilical cord insertion), their contents, their size and associated malformations or karyotypic abnormalities. Based on this examination, two groups can be distinguished: gastroschisis or omphalocele (when the latter is isolated, in particular without karyotypic abnormalities) which can be surgically corrected
