Use of an optical jaw-tracking system to record mandibular motion for treatment planning and designing interim and definitive prostheses: A dental technique.

Optical jaw-tracking systems can record mandibular motion during the various treatment phases. Also, computer-aided design programs facilitate the integration of a patient's digital information, including recorded mandibular motion, into the design of interim and definitive prostheses. A technique to fabricate a complete mouth implant-supported rehabilitation by using mandibular motion captured with an optical jaw-tracking system is described. The mandibular motion recordings obtained before the treatment are combined with the interim restorations to perform a diagnostic waxing, design the com

Proton radiation therapy (PRT) for pediatric optic pathway gliomas: comparison with 3D planned conventional photons and a standard photon technique.

PURPOSE: Following adequate therapy, excellent long-term survival rates can be achieved for patients with optic pathway gliomas. Therefore, avoidance of treatment-related functional long-term sequelae is of utmost importance. Optimized sparing of normal tissue is of primary concern in the development of new treatment modalities. The present study compares proton radiation therapy (PRT) with a three-dimensional (3D)-planned multiport photon and a lateral beam photon technique for localized and extensive optic pathway tumors. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Between February 1992 and November 1997, seven

Hybrid Planning for Complex Brain Metastases in Linear Accelerator (LINAC)-Based Stereotactic Radiosurgery: A Dosimetric Comparison With Dynamic Conformal Arc (DCA) and Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) Techniques.

INTRODUCTION: Dynamic conformal arc (DCA) and volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) are widely used for linear accelerator-based single-isocenter multi-target stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) in treating multiple brain metastases. DCA offers advantages in delivery efficiency, quality assurance, and dose gradient steepness. However, DCA produces suboptimal conformity for challenging targets, including large postoperative cavities, irregularly shaped lesions, or tumors adjacent to critical organs-at-risk (OARs). VMAT improves conformity for complex targets but may be unnecessary for simple lesi

Physician-Modified Fenestrated Stent-Grafts Planned Using Three-Dimensional Techniques for Complex Aortic Pathology: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Complex aortic pathology involving the visceral arteries remains a significant therapeutic challenge. Open repair is associated with considerable perioperative risk, particularly in patients with multiple comorbidities, while standard endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) is often not feasible because of inadequate proximal sealing zones. Fenestrated and branched endovascular repair (F/BEVAR) represents an established treatment strategy; however, the use of custom-made devices is limited by manufacturing time and availability. Physician-modified stent grafts (PMSGs) have therefore em

Clinical technique: evaluation of detection accuracy in surface-guided radiation therapy using CT references from different treatment planning systems.

This study evaluated the detection accuracy of the VOXELAN surface-guided radiation therapy (SGRT) system using CT reference body surfaces generated by different radiation treatment planning systems (RTPSs) under their respective default CT value threshold settings. Two phantoms were used to assess 6-axis position matching accuracy with 1 mm and 2 mm slice thicknesses. Contour variations of approximately 2 mm were observed in the ventral and dorsal directions due to differing RTPSs. VOXELAN generally achieved detection accuracy within 1 mm, though some RTPS combinations showed errors exceeding

Technical note: A spiral fluid-attenuated inversion recovery magnetic resonance imaging technique for stereotactic radiosurgery treatment planning for trigeminal neuralgia.

PURPOSE: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is commonly used in treatment planning for stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) of trigeminal neuralgia (TN). With current MRI techniques, the delineation of the trigeminal nerve root entry zone (REZ) may be degraded due to poor contrast and artifacts. The purpose of this work is to develop an MRI technique with better delineation of the trigeminal nerve REZ to improve SRS treatment planning for TN. METHODS: A spiral fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) MRI technique was developed to improve image quality by improving tissue contrast, fluid suppress

Popliteal-to-Dorsalis Pedis In-Situ Small Saphenous Vein Bypass under Planning with Mapping Using Computed Tomography Volume Rendering Technique.

The small saphenous vein (SSV) is an important graft in limb salvage surgery. It is frequently translocated for bypass surgery. Sometimes, the use of the SSV as an in-situ graft for posterior tibial artery or peroneal artery reconstruction offers the advantages of reduced vein graft injury and improved patency. Recently, saphenous vein mapping through computed tomography (CT) volume rendering technique offers a great quality view to the surgeon. We experienced a patient in whom a CT image with volume rendering technique revealed an aberrant SSV connected with the great saphenous vein at the me

Optimization of image reconstruction technique for respiratory-gated lung stereotactic body radiotherapy treatment planning using four-dimensional CT: a phantom study.

Patient respiration is characterized by respiratory parameters, such as cycle, amplitude, and baseline drift. In treatment planning using four-dimensional computed tomography (4DCT) images, the target dose may be affected by variations in image reconstruction techniques and respiratory parameters. This study aimed to optimize 4DCT image reconstruction techniques for the treatment planning of lung stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) based on respiratory parameters using respiratory motion phantom. We quantified respiratory parameters using 30 respiratory motion datasets. The 4DCT images were

Endoscopic Endonasal Surgery for Resection of Giant Craniopharyngioma in a Toddler-Multimodal Presurgical Planning, Surgical Technique, and Management of Complications: 2-Dimensional Operative Video.

A 2-yr-old patient with a giant craniopharyngioma presented with seizures and panhypopituitarism. The lesion was initially approached at an outside institution with a transfrontal cyst fenestration, but progressive growth occurred later. Multiple management options were considered; we recommended an endoscopic endonasal approach with the goal of maximal safe resection. Virtual reality simulation and 3-dimensional printing were employed to evaluate whether the absence of pneumatization of the sinuses and the overall size of the nasal cavity could preclude effective surgical access. Integrated skin flash planning technique for intensity-modulated radiation therapy for vulvar cancer prevents marginal misses and improves superficial dose coverage.

INTRODUCTION: Radiation therapy (RT) plays a definitive role in locally advanced vulvar cancer, and in the adjuvant setting with high risk postoperative features after wide local excision. There is significant morbidity associated with traditional, large RT fields using 2D or 3D techniques, and the use of intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) in vulvar cancer is increasing. However, there remains a paucity of technical information regarding the prevention of a marginal miss during the treatment planning process. The use of an integrated skin flash (ISF) during RT planning can be used to
