Genetics of acheiropodia (the handless and footless families of Brazil). VII. Population dynamics.

Since carriers of the acheiropodia gene cannot be distinguished from noncarriers, parents and normal sibs of affected individuals have been used to estimate the fitness of heterozygotes. No significant difference in biologic fitness (viability and fertility) between normal sibs and the general population could be detected. A comparison between acheiropods and their normal sibs showed the following: (1) a nonsignificant difference in stillbirth rate; (2) a higher mortality rate of acheiropods in the first 5 years of life; (3) a relative viability not larger than .7; (4) a relative fertility no

WISH-barcoding of Salmonella Typhimurium ATCC14028s strains for population dynamics studies in vivo.

BACKGROUND: Barcoding of isogenic strains is a powerful approach to assess pathogen population dynamics during infection. Here, we adapted WISH-barcoding to Salmonella Typhimurium ATCC14028s to evaluate its suitability for pooled infection experiments in streptomycin-pretreated mouse models. RESULTS: WISH-barcoded wild-type pools showed pronounced population instability, characterized by reproducible strain loss and segregation into high- and low-fitness subpopulations. Whole-genome sequencing identified recurrent mutations in the methyltransferase gene rsmG and loss of the P3 plasmid carryin

Mesoporous PU/PEDOT:PSS Electrodes Reveal Population-Level Stochastic Bioelectrical Dynamics in Marine Diatoms.

Understanding how microbial populations generate and modulate electrical signals remains a major technical challenge because extracellular ionic processes are inherently weak, spatially distributed and stochastic. Here, we introduce a mesoporous ultra-low-impedance PEDOT:PSS electrode that exploits volumetric ionic-electronic coupling to probe stochastic electrochemical dynamics in axenic populations of the marine model diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum. The three-dimensional porous architecture provides a large electrochemically accessible surface area with high capacitance and low impedance,

A generalized multi-population model for Ebola virus transmission incorporating environmental reservoir dynamics.

BACKGROUND: Ebola virus disease (EVD) remains a serious public health hazard due to high mortality, multiple modes of transmission, and persistence in the environment. The existing Ebola transmission models have been constrained to a single or two-population framework, which are insufficient to capture multiple-population interaction transmission structures. METHODS: This study proposes a multi-population autonomous Ebola transmission model with Susceptible, Exposed, Infectious, Hospitalized, Recovered, and Deceased infected corpse compartments and a shared viral reservoir in the environment.

Agent-Based Modeling Approach for Population Dynamics of the Biological Vector Aedes Aegypti.

BACKGROUND: The invasive mosquito Aedes aegypti is a major vector of arboviruses, such as Dengue, Zika, Chikungunya and Yellow Fever. OBJECTIVE: As a first step toward a transmission model for vector-borne diseases, a weather-dependent population dynamic simulation for Ae. aegypti was developed, suitable for high weather short-term variability in the Austrian region. METHODS: We developed an agent-based model, incorporating temperature- and precipitation-dependent development, mortality, movement, feeding behavior, and egg-laying. Species-specific parameters were derived from published exper

Temporal dynamics of the S. thermophilus phage population in a yogurt production facility.

Starter cultures are essential for milk fermentation, but phage infections can disrupt production, compromising product quality and causing economic losses. In this study, we investigated the dynamics, diversity, and persistence of 25 S. thermophilus phages isolated over a 15-year period from a large yogurt manufacturing plant. Phages were classified into Moineauvirus (16) and Brussowvirus (9), comprising ten distinct restriction profiles. Host range, genomic features, and resistance to thermal and chemical treatments were analyzed to identify factors underlying their long-term persistence. No

Urban survival, population dynamics and historical transitions in Thessaloniki (316 BC-AD 1500).

Cities have historically endured profound challenges while sustaining their populations through adaptive structures and functions. Understanding contemporary urbanization requires situating it within these long-term historical trajectories. This study examines the demographic consequences of historical transitions in Thessaloniki over 1,800 years, based on 846 individuals recovered from peri-urban and intramural cemeteries. Survival analysis was applied to assess mortality risk and life expectancy across six periods: Hellenistic (323-31 BC), Roman (31 BC-AD 324), Early Byzantine (AD 324-842),

Pseudomonas aeruginosa population dynamics in a vancomycin-induced murine model of gastrointestinal carriage.

UNLABELLED: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a common nosocomial pathogen and a major cause of morbidity and mortality in hospitalized patients. Multiple reports highlight that P. aeruginosa gastrointestinal colonization may precede systemic infections by this pathogen. Gaining a deeper insight into the dynamics of P. aeruginosa gastrointestinal carriage is an essential step in managing gastrointestinal colonization and could contribute to preventing bacterial transmission and progression to systemic infection. Here, we present a clinically relevant mouse model relying on parenteral vancomycin pretre

Dynamics of PTSD and autonomic symptoms in a longitudinal U.S. population-based sample.

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms can co-occur with somatic symptoms, associations which may be partly due to threat-responsive changes in the autonomic nervous system. Prior studies support between-person associations of elevated autonomic symptoms with higher PTSD severity. However, there is a need to distinguish between- and within-person variation in symptoms over time. METHOD: This study used a latent growth model with structured residuals to examine the dynamics of PTSD and autonomic symptoms in a U.S. population-based sample. Participants were 475 adults with an

Impact of latent delay and environment infection on tuberculosis dynamics in a population.

In this paper we explore the impact of latency delay and infection by Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the environment on the spread of tuberculosis in a population. We first derive a delay differential equation model with environmental indirect transmission. We address the well-posenedness and identify the basic reproduction number R0 of the model. We then discuss the equilibria and their stability in terms of the composite threshold parameter R0 which determine whether or not the tuberculosis will go extinct of persist in the popolaiton: the disease free equilibrium is globally stable if R0<1,

POPULATION DYNAMICS OF ENTERIC PARASITES IN THE ENDANGERED VANCOUVER ISLAND MARMOT (MARMOTA VANCOUVERENSIS).

Enteric parasites can have wide-ranging effects throughout an ecosystem, often driving coevolutionary and ecological processes. Parasites have long been overlooked in conservation efforts because of the negative impact inflicted on their hosts; however, parasites make up a significant component of Earth's biodiversity and host conservation efforts need to be parasite inclusive. The Vancouver Island marmot (VIM), Marmota vancouverensis, is an endangered alpine rodent endemic to Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Captive-bred VIMs are released to augment the wild population, but their s

Electrophysiological population dynamics reveal context dependencies during decision making in human frontal cortex.

Evidence from monkeys and humans suggests that the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) encodes the subjective value of options under consideration during choice. Data from non-human primates suggests that these value signals are context-dependent, representing subjective value in a way influenced by the decision makers' recent experience. Using electrodes distributed throughout cortical and subcortical structures, human epilepsy patients performed an auction task where they repeatedly reported the subjective values they placed on snack food items. High-gamma activity in many cortical and subcortical si

Theoretical Considerations and Empirical Predictions of the Pharmaco- and Population Dynamics of Heteroresistance.

Antibiotics are considered one of the most important contributions to clinical medicine in the last 100 years. Due to the use and overuse of these drugs, there have been increasing frequencies of infections with resistant pathogens. One form of resistance, heteroresistance, is particularly problematic; pathogens appear sensitive to a drug by common susceptibility tests. However, upon exposure to the antibiotic, resistance rapidly ascends, and treatment fails. To quantitatively explore the processes contributing to the emergence and ascent of resistance during treatment and the waning of resist

Comprehensive Analysis of Cell Population Dynamics and Related Core Genes During Vitiligo Development.

Vitiligo is a common immune-related depigmentation condition, and its pathogenesis remains unclear. This study used a combination of bioinformatics methods and expression analysis techniques to explore the relationship between immune cell infiltration and gene expression in vitiligo. Previously reported gene expression microarray data from the skin (GSE53146 and GSE75819) and peripheral blood (GSE80009 and GSE90880) of vitiligo patients and healthy controls was used in the analysis. R software was used to filter the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in each dataset, and the KOBAS 2.0 serve

A climate-driven and field data-assimilated population dynamics model of sand flies.

Sand flies are responsible for the transmission of leishmaniasis, a neglected tropical disease claiming more than 50,000 lives annually. Leishmaniasis is an emerging health risk in tropical and Mediterranean countries as well as temperate regions in North America and Europe. There is an increasing demand for predicting population dynamics and spreading of sand flies to support management and control, yet phenotypic diversity and complex environmental dependence hamper model development. Here, we present the principles for developing predictive species-specific population dynamics models for im

Long-term genetic stability and population dynamics of laboratory strains of Schistosoma mansoni.

Measures of genetic differentiation between populations are useful tools for understanding the long-term dynamics of parasite communities. We followed the allele frequencies of microsatellite markers in samples taken over a period of 16 yr from the Case Western Reserve University-Naval Medical Research Institute (CWRU-NMRI) laboratory strain of Schistosoma mansoni. DNA was isolated from pooled samples of adults, eggs, or cercariae collected at 46 time points and genotyped for 14 tri- or tetranucleotide microsatellite markers. For comparison, 2 S. mansoni reference strains (Biomedical Research

Using dynamic microsimulation to project cognitive function in the elderly population.

BACKGROUND: A long-term projection model based on nationally representative data and tracking disease progression across Alzheimer's disease continuum is important for economics evaluation of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias (ADOD) therapy. METHODS: The Health and Retirement Study (HRS) includes an adapted version of the Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status (TICS27) to evaluate respondents' cognitive function. We developed an ordered probit transition model to predict future TICS27 score. This transition model is utilized in the Future Elderly Model (FEM), a dynamic microsimulation

Dynamics of toxoplasmosis in the cat's population with an exposed stage and a time delay.

We propose a new mathematical model to investigate the effect of the introduction of an exposed stage for the cats who become infected with the T. gondii parasite, but that are not still able to produce oocysts in the environment. The model considers a time delay in order to represent the duration of the exposed stage. Besides the cat population the model also includes the oocysts related to the T. gondii in the environment. The model includes the cats since they are the only definitive host and the oocysts, since they are relevant to the dynamics of toxoplasmosis. The model considers lifelong

Accessory Genome Dynamics of Local and Global Staphylococcus pseudintermedius Populations.

Staphylococcus pseudintermedius is a major bacterial colonizer and opportunistic pathogen in dogs. Methicillin-resistant S. pseudintermedius (MRSP) continues to emerge as a significant challenge to maintaining canine health. We sought to determine the phylogenetic relationships of S. pseudintermedius across five states in the New England region of the United States and place them in a global context. The New England dataset consisted of 125 previously published S. pseudintermedius genomes supplemented with 45 newly sequenced isolates. The core genome phylogenetic tree revealed many deep branch
