Prenatal nutrition modulates hepatic long non-coding RNA regulatory elements in Nellore cattle offspring.

This study investigated the effects of maternal nutrition on hepatic long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) expression in Nellore cattle offspring. To this end, a total of 126 pregnant cows were assigned to three dietary treatments: not programmed (mineral supplementation only), partial programming (late protein-energy supplementation), and full programming (protein-energy supplementation throughout pregnancy). At 676±28 days of age, liver samples were collected from the offspring to perform RNA-sequencing. Novel lncRNAs were identified with FEELnc and CPC2, and differentially expressed lncRNAs (DELs) w

[Current challenges of nutrition applied research: ¿person or population?].

During the last half of the 20th century, Nutrition has evolved in a quick way based on the knowledge of both basic sciences as Biochemistry and Physiology and applied sciences as Epidemiology and Public Health. In that period the nutritional requirements for different population groups grouped by sex, age and physiological conditions have been established. However, in spite of the enormous knowledge in food and nutritional sciences, malnutrition by nutrient deficiencies (protein-energy undernutrition and micronutrient deficiencies) and by excess of nutrient intake (overweight and obesity) con

International Symposium on Ruminant Physiology: Maternal nutrient supply-Impacts on physiological and whole-animal outcomes in offspring.

Demands for animal products are projected to increase in the future, and animal production is key to agricultural sustainability and food security; consequently, enhancing ruminant livestock production efficiencies in sustainable ways is a major goal for the livestock industry. Developmental programming is the concept that various stressors, including compromised maternal nutrition during critical developmental windows will result in both short- and long-term changes in the offspring. Ruminant models of developmental programming indicate that compromised maternal nutrition, including global un

Cancer of the prostate: a nutritional disease?

UNLABELLED: In summary, epidemiologic and laboratory evidence increasingly demonstrate that nutritional factors, especially reduced fat intake, soy proteins, vitamin E derivatives, and selenium, may have a protective effect against prostate cancer. The experimental observation that low-fat diets and soy protein extracts may influence the progression of established tumors, rather than inhibiting etiologic factors, is particularly intriguing because it may serve to help explain the paradox whereby the incidence of clinical prostate cancer shows wide geographic variation, yet the evidence persist

Nutritional aspects of manganese from experimental studies.

In experimental animals, dietary manganese deficiency can result in numerous biochemical and structural abnormalities. Deficient animals can be characterized by impaired insulin production, alterations in lipoprotein metabolism, an impaired oxidant defense system, and perturbations in growth factor metabolism. If the deficiency occurs during early development, there can be pronounced skeletal abnormalities and an irreversible ataxia. Several lines of evidence suggest that manganese deficiency may be a problem in some human populations. Manganese toxicity can also pose a significant health risk

HORSE SPECIES SYMPOSIUM: Nutritional programming and the impact on mare and foal performance.

Many environmental factors can alter the phenotype of offspring when applied during critical periods of early development. In most domestic species, maternal nutrition influences fetal development and the fetus is sensitive to the nutrition of the dam during pregnancy. Many experimental models have been explored including both under- and overnutrition of the dam. Both nutritional strategies have yielded potential consequences including altered glucose tolerance, pancreatic endocrine function, insulin sensitivity, body composition, and colostrum quality. Although the impact of maternal nutritio

Equid Nutritional Physiology and Behavior: An Evolutionary Perspective.

Like other members of the odd-toed ungulates (the perissodactyls), equids once had a higher species diversity in the fossil record than they have today. This is generally explained in comparison to the enormous diversity of bovid ruminants. Theories on putative competitive disadvantages of equids include the use of a single toe as opposed to two toes per leg, the lack of a specific brain cooling (and hence water-saving) mechanism, longer gestation periods that delay reproductive output, and in particular digestive physiology. To date, there is no empirical support for the theory that equids fa

Early life nutrition and neuroendocrine programming.

Alterations in the nutritional environment in early life can significantly increase the risk for obesity and a range of development of metabolic disorders in offspring in later life, effects that can be passed onto future generations. This process, termed development programming, provides the framework of the developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) paradigm. Early life nutritional compromise including undernutrition, overnutrition or specific macro/micronutrient deficiencies, results in a range of adverse health outcomes in offspring that can be further exacerbated by a poor postna

[Tin compounds in pharmacy and nutrition].

The occurrence of tin in plants, animals and humans is discussed, in relation to its abundance in the lithosphere and hydrosphere and the range of the different tin(II) and tin(IV) complexes formed. A reasoned consideration of its essentiality for living species is provided. It is concluded that tin is beneficial, even if not yet proved to be an essential element. After reference to the chemistry of tin compounds, there is a detailed discussion of their toxicity in animals and humans. Feasible routes for tin intake and uptake into humans are described. The past and current use of tin pharmaceu

Intrauterine nutrition: its importance during critical periods for cardiovascular and endocrine development.

Experimental investigations in animals have highlighted the role of early reduced calorie and protein nutrition on fetal cardiovascular development, and the occurrence of a transition from a low fetal arterial blood pressure in late gestation to a high arterial blood pressure postnatally. These observations may explain the correlation between health, including appropriate nutrition, in pregnant women and the outcome of their pregnancies. Emphasis has been placed on low birth weight infants who have an increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension, coronary heart

Studies on the nutrition of marine flatfish. The thiamin requirement of turbot (Scophthalmus maximus).

1. Seven groups of young turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) were given diets containing graded levels of thiamin (0-19--50 mg/kg) for 16 weeks and their growth rate was measured during this period. 2. Good growth was obtained on all these treatments except in the group given the lowest dietary thiamin level (0-19 mg/kg). These fish grew normally until the 12th week but thereafter their weight did not increase. 3. Measurements of erythrocyte transketolase (sedoheptulose-7-phosphate: D-glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate glycolaldehydetransferase; EC 2.2.1.1) activity at the end of the experiment and of perce

Intestinal development of bovine foetuses during gestation is affected by foetal sex and maternal nutrition.

We aimed to evaluate the effects of maternal nutrition (MN) and foetal sex on the intestinal development of bovine foetuses throughout different days of gestation (DG). Forty-four multiparous, dry Holstein × Gyr cows with average initial body weight of 480 ± 10 kg were fed the same diet of either restricted feeding at 1.15% of body weight (CO, n = 24) or fed ad libitum (overnourished, ON, n = 20). Six cows from CO group and five cows from ON group were slaughtered at 139, 199, 241 and 268 DG, and foetuses were necropsied to evaluate the intestinal development. The role of maternal dietary protein on livestock development, production and health.

Maternal dietary protein plays a pivotal role in shaping offspring development, health, and productivity in economically important livestock species, including pigs, cattle, and sheep. Protein intake during gestation influences multiple physiological processes in the offspring, such as fetal growth, metabolic programming, muscle development, immune function, reproduction, and gut health. The specific effects of maternal protein intake vary depending on the species and the gestational period, as the demands for protein fluctuate throughout pregnancy to support fetal development and postnatal ad

Parenteral nutritional support in the small animal patient.

Malnutrition has a direct relationship to complications associated with ineffective wound and fracture healing, inadequate immune responses, decreased tolerance to cancer therapy, muscle weakness, and certain organ dysfunctions (heart and liver). Malnutrition combined with disease, injury, or stress increases the metabolic rate in patients above that of resting. These patients are undergoing an accelerated form of starvation, which is more common than presently recognized in veterinary medicine and may be responsible for the less than optimal responses to proper therapies. Diseased or injured

Approaches to nutritional research using organoids; fructose treatment induces epigenetic changes in liver organoids.

Nutritional researches have successfully used animal models to gain new insights into nutrient action. However, comprehensive descriptions of their molecular mechanisms of action remain elusive as appropriate in vitro evaluation systems are lacking. Organoid models can mimic physiological structures and reproduce in vivo functions, making them increasingly utilized in biomedical research for a better understand physiological and pathological phenomena. Therefore, organoid modeling can be a powerful approach for to understand the molecular mechanisms of nutrient action. The present study aims t

Maternal Liver Retinol Stores Do Not Ensure Adequate Calf Vitamin A Under Restricted Late-Gestation Vitamin A Intake.

Vitamin A is critical for immune function and epithelial integrity, yet the relationship between maternal and calf vitamin A status is not well defined. This study evaluated cow-calf vitamin A status under restricted maternal vitamin A intake during late gestation and early lactation. Beef cows (n = 114) were individually fed 14,000 or 29,000 IU/d of vitamin A (approximately 30% or 75% of recommendations) from 128 days pre-calving to 32 days post-calving. All cows began with high liver retinol concentrations (mean ± SD: 786 ± 252 μg/g DM) from prior grazing. Cow liver and plasma, and calf live
