Broussonetia luzonica, Family Moraceae, and locally called Himbabao, is a dioecious plant endemic to the Philippines. Despite extensive use of its flowers and young leaves as food, studies on Himbabao are limited, especially for the female species. In this study, the composition of both the male and female B. luzonica leaves was investigated through a proximate, mineral, and phytochemical analysis. The proximate analysis was done by standard methods of moisture, ash, protein, crude fiber, crude fat, and carbohydrate content determination. The mineral analysis was done by Inductively Coupled Pl

Liver injury caused by an overdose of acetaminophen (APAP) is a major public health problem. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Broussonetia papyrifera polysaccharide (BPP) on liver injury and intestinal flora induced by APAP. The results showed that BPP could protect against APAP-induced liver injury, alleviate liver apoptosis, improve antioxidant capacity and enhance the liver's detoxification ability to APAP. At the same time, BPP improved the intestinal flora disorder caused by APAP. More importantly, we found that the hepatoprotective effect of BPP disappeared after the depletion

This study developed an efficient extraction process for flavonoids from Broussonetia papyrifera leaves using the response surface methodology. The optimized flavonoids exhibited remarkable antioxidant activity, effectively scavenging DPPH, hydroxyl, and ABTS radicals. UPLC-MS/MS analysis preliminarily identified numerous flavonoid compounds in the extract.. The extract also demonstrated potent broad-spectrum antibacterial efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans. These findings indicate that the extracted flavonoids may serve as natural antioxidants and a

In the present study, we developed an efficient and reproducible protocol for in vitro regeneration and Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated genetic transformation of Broussonetia papyrifera (L.) L'Hér. ex Vent. (paper mulberry) using leaf explants from a hybrid genotype. First, we optimized surface sterilization of leaf explants. Treatment with 0.6% (w/v) sodium hypochlorite for 8 min, followed by three rinses with sterile water and blotting on sterile filter paper, yielded a 33.60% explant survival rate and reduced contamination to 35.84%. Second, we refined the co-cultivation step for transfo

Diabetic nephropathy is one of the most serious complications of diabetes. Lipotoxicity in glomerular mesangial cells is associated with the progression of diabetic nephropathy. Paper mulberry, Broussonetia kazinoki Siebold (BK), has been used in oriental medicine for human health problems. However, to date, the beneficial effect of BK fruit has not been studied. In this study, we investigated the protective effect of an ethanolic extract of BK fruit (BKFE) against palmitate- (PA-) induced toxicity in mesangial cells. BKFE significantly increased the viability of PA-treated SV40 MES13 cells. B

Plant sterilants are used to control rodent populations due to their minimal environmental risk and other ethical considerations. However, their practical utilization is unsatisfactory due to high costs and processing difficulties. Broussonetia papyrifera is a plant material that has shown the potential to inhibit the reproduction of Microtus fortis, a species that causes serious damage to crops in the Dongting Lake region in China. M. fortis was treated with different doses of B. papyrifera leaf methanol extracts. The results show that the growth of sex organs was inhibited, and the males' te

Cadmium (Cd) contamination poses a major threat to forest ecosystems, and Broussonetia papyrifera is a promising woody species with strong Cd tolerance and accumulation capacity. Vacuolar H+-ATPase (V-ATPase) is central to ion homeostasis and heavy metal detoxification, yet the organ- and domain-specific roles of its subunits in Cd responses remain unclear. We integrated physiological measurements, transcript profiling, enzyme activity assays and genome-wide analyses to characterize V-ATPase subunits (BpVHAs) and their functions under a 30-day Cd treatment in roots, stems and leaves of B. papy

Paper mulberry, a vigorous pioneer species used for ecological reclamation and a high-protein forage plant for economic development, has been widely planted in China. To further develop its potential value, it is necessary to explore the regulatory mechanism of nitrogen metabolism for rational nitrogen utilization. In this study, we investigated the morphology, physiology and transcriptome of a paper mulberry hybrid (Broussonetia kazinoki × B. papyrifera) in response to different nitrogen concentrations. Moderate nitrogen promoted plant growth and biomass accumulation. Photosynthetic character

Broussonetia papyrifera, commonly known as paper mulberry, is an ornamental tree that is native to northeastern Asia. Because of its fast-growing nature and tolerance of dust, smoke, and high temperatures, paper mulberry is an important component of the biological diversity in natural ecosystems as well as a favorable shade tree in the region. In September of 2003, a disease characterized by pronounced witches'-broom symptoms was observed in paper mulberry trees growing near a jujube (Ziziphus jujuba) orchard and in home gardens located in Taian, Shandong, China. The diseased trees developed d

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory immune-related skin disease. According to literature reports, the leaves of Broussonetia papyrifera exhibit antioxidant, immune-enhancing and antibacterial effects. These leaves are not only used clinically for the treatment of superficial fungal infections and hepatitis, but also used in the development of health food. However, the treatment of psoriasis with the leaves of B. papyrifera has not been reported yet. The in vitro antioxidant activity of B. papyrifera leaf extract was investigated by DPPH, OH and ABTS assays. Furthermore, IMQ was used to induce
