Neurobiological studies of reading and reading disability.

UNLABELLED: Evidence from neuroimaging studies, including our own, suggest that skilled word identification in reading is related to the functional integrity of two consolidated left hemisphere (LH) posterior systems: a dorsal (temporo-parietal) circuit and a ventral (occipito-temporal) circuit. This posterior system appears to be functionally disrupted in developmental dyslexia. Relative to nonimpaired readers, reading-disabled individuals demonstrate heightened reliance on both inferior frontal and right hemisphere posterior regions, presumably in compensation for the LH posterior difficulti

Interpretive Methods in Disability Studies: Dyslexia Inflected Inquiry.

This article explores how disability studies can take shape as an interpretive method and how disability-perception can influence this. My exploration is organized in relation to the following question: In what ways might attention to dyslexia as an interpretive act inflect social inquiry? I treat interpretive methods as a form of inquiry that attends to the social activity of interpretation itself and I regard dyslexia as part of such activity. A key issue for such inquiry is how to methodically engage appearances as an interpretive encounter: That is, how can we make the taken-for-granted ac

Functional neuroimaging studies of reading and reading disability (developmental dyslexia).

Converging evidence from a number of neuroimaging studies, including our own, suggest that fluent word identification in reading is related to the functional integrity of two consolidated left hemisphere (LH) posterior systems: a dorsal (temporo-parietal) circuit and a ventral (occipito-temporal) circuit. This posterior system is functionally disrupted in developmental dyslexia. Reading disabled readers, relative to nonimpaired readers, demonstrate heightened reliance on both inferior frontal and right hemisphere posterior regions, presumably in compensation for the LH posterior difficulties.

Uncoupling Relapse Reduction and Disability Progression: Evidence From Tolebrutinib Studies.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the treatment effects of tolebrutinib on confirmed disability worsening (CDW) diverge from its effects on relapse prevention compared with other disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) for relapsing multiple sclerosis (MS). METHODS: We extracted published effect estimates for annualized relapse rate (ARR) and CDW confirmed at 24 weeks from all phase 3 trials with teriflunomide as the active comparator: ASCLEPIOS (ofatumumab), OPTIMUM (ponesimod), ULTIMATE (ublituximab), EVOLUTION (evobrutinib), and GEMINI (tolebrutinib). Genetic studies in children with intellectual disability and autistic spectrum of disorders.

Autism is one of the five disorders that falls under the umbrella of Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD) or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a category of neurological disorders characterized by "severe and pervasive impairment in several areas of development." ASD is characterized by varying degrees of impairment in communication skills, social interaction and restricted, repetitive stereotyped patterns of behavior. The five disorders under PDD are autistic disorder, Asperger's disorder, childhood disintegrative disorder, Rett's disorder and PDD-not otherwise specified. ASD can often be re

Sex differences in developmental reading disability: new findings from 4 epidemiological studies.

CONTEXT: An influential article published in 1990 claimed that the increased rate of reading disability in boys was a consequence of referral bias. OBJECTIVES: To summarize the history of research on sex differences in reading disability and to provide new evidence from 4 independent epidemiological studies about the nature, extent, and significance of sex differences in reading disability. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study comprised 989 individuals (52.1% male) in a cohort born between April 1972 and March 1973 in Dunedin, New Zeal

Disability and rurality: a systematic review of qualitative studies of experiences with disability among families with children and youth with disabilities.

PURPOSE: Children and youth with disabilities and their families living in rural areas often face additional challenges to accessing services and often experience more social isolation than children and youth in urban centers. However, we know relatively little about their lived experiences. The purpose of this review was to explore the experiences of children and youth with disabilities and their parents who live in rural areas. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of qualitative studies. We searched six international databases Ovid Medline, Embase, Healthstar, CINAHL Plus, Scopus, and

The reproducibility of psychiatric evaluations of work disability: two reliability and agreement studies.

BACKGROUND: Expert psychiatrists conducting work disability evaluations often disagree on work capacity (WC) when assessing the same patient. More structured and standardised evaluations focusing on function could improve agreement. The RELY studies aimed to establish the inter-rater reproducibility (reliability and agreement) of 'functional evaluations' in patients with mental disorders applying for disability benefits and to compare the effect of limited versus intensive expert training on reproducibility. METHODS: We performed two multi-centre reproducibility studies on standardised functi

Neurological abnormalities predict disability: the LADIS (Leukoaraiosis And DISability) study.

To investigate the role of neurological abnormalities and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) lesions in predicting global functional decline in a cohort of initially independent-living elderly subjects. The Leukoaraiosis And DISability (LADIS) Study, involving 11 European centres, was primarily aimed at evaluating age-related white matter changes (ARWMC) as an independent predictor of the transition to disability (according to Instrumental Activities of Daily Living scale) or death in independent elderly subjects that were followed up for 3 years. At baseline, a standardized neurological examina

[Clinical studies of learning disability. Part I: Two-axial diagnosis of learning disability using the Pupil Rating Scale Revised (PRS) and WISC-R].

We investigated the correlation between intelligence quotient and school performance evaluated by PRS (the Pupil Rating Scale Revised) to assess an adequacy of two-axial diagnosis of learning disabilities (LD). The subjects were 37 children, including 31 cases with developmental or school problems and 6 normal children. The Japanese Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R) was employed for an estimation of intelligence quotient (IQ) and, PRS was used to evaluate school performance. We defined 'LD risk child' as a child whose IQ was no less than 70 and PRS score was no more tha

Associations of activities of daily living disability and instrumental activities of daily living disability with all-cause mortality: evidence from five major longitudinal studies.

BACKGROUND: With global population ageing, maintaining independence through activities of daily living (ADL) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) is increasingly important for older adults. Existing evidence suggests that ADL/IADL disability is associated with higher mortality, but global evidence in middle-aged and older populations remains limited. METHODS: We conducted a multi-cohort pooled study using harmonized data from five major longitudinal studies in the Harmonized Gateway to Global Aging Data: the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), China Health and Retirement Longitud

Will psychology ever 'join hands' with disability studies? Opportunities and challenges in working towards structurally competent and disability-affirmative psychotherapy for energy limiting conditions.

Despite sustained efforts among critically informed scholars to integrate thinking from disability studies into psychology, the psy disciplines continue to largely neglect the lived experience of disabled people and overlook disability as a form of social inequity and valued culture. In this article, I make a renewed case for integrating thinking from disability studies into psy, in particular within the psychotherapy professions and in the case of 'energy limiting conditions', a grass-roots concept that includes clinically and socially marginalised chronic illness such as Long COVID.
