In this review, the clinical utility of echoplanar techniques in MRI of the brain is discussed. Comparison of high-resolution EPI with SE/turbo-SE shows high image quality of EPI in the supratentorial brain. In the infratentorial region, however, susceptibility artifacts limit image quality. For the assessment of neuronal brain activation utilizing the intrinsic contrast of blood (BOLD), EPI has definite advantages over other techniques of functional MRI. Due to its superior temporal resolution and multislice capabilities, EPI allows for analysis of complex neuronal activation patterns. Diffus

Characteristics of the acoustic noise generated by magnetic resonance imagers of different systems and performance levels were studied when operating in echo-planar imaging (EPI) sequence. Continuous equivalent A-weighted sound pressure levels (Leq) and peak impulse sound pressure levels (Lpeak) during EPI were measured in 12 clinical super-conducting MRI systems (0.5-1.5 T). Sound pressure levels and frequency spectra of EPI were compared with those of nine different pulse sequences. EPI sound pressure levels differed among institutions (Leq = 94.2 +/- 2.7 dBA. Lpeak = 109.1 +/- 3.5 dB), but

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Parallel imaging facilitates the acquisition of echo-planar images with a reduced TE, enabling the incorporation of an additional image at a later TE. Here we investigated the use of a parallel imaging-enhanced dual-echo EPI sequence to improve lesion conspicuity in diffusion-weighted imaging.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Parallel imaging-enhanced dual-echo DWI data were acquired in 50 consecutive patients suspected of stroke at 1.5T. The dual-echo acquisition included 2 EPI for 1 diffusion-preparation period (echo 1 [TE = 48 ms] and echo 2 [TE = 105 ms]). Three neuroradiolo

BACKGROUND: Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is routinely used in brain tumor surgery guided by intraoperative MRI (IoMRI). However, conventional echo planar imaging DWI (EPI-DWI) is susceptible to distortion and artifacts that affect image quality. Turbo spin echo DWI (TSE-DWI) is an alternative technique with minimal spatial distortions that has the potential to be the radiologically preferred sequence.
PURPOSE: To compare via single- and multisequence assessment EPI-DWI and TSE-DWI in the IoMRI setting to determine whether there is a radiological preference for either sequence.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of multishot echo-planar imaging (EPI) [RESOLVE (RS)] and non-EPI (HASTE) diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) in detecting cholesteatoma (CHO), and to explore the role of signal intensity (SI) ratio measurements in addressing diagnostic challenges.
METHODS: We analyzed RS-EPI and non-EPI DWI images from 154 patients who had undergone microscopic middle ear surgery, with pathological confirmation of their diagnoses. Two radiologists, referred to as Reader A and Reader B, independently reviewed the images without prior knowledge of the outcomes. Their e

PURPOSE: To evaluate the usefulness of readout-segmented echo-planar imaging (RS-EPI) compared with single-shot EPI (SS-EPI) in diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) of the pancreas.
METHODS: Fourteen healthy volunteers underwent pancreatic DWI using both SS-EPI and RS-EPI. The depiction area of the pancreas, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), sharpness, apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values, and acquisition time were compared. The depiction area was normalized using half-Fourier acquisition single-shot turbo spin echo (HASTE) images. SNR was calculated using the identical region of interest metho

The purpose of this study was to compare the image quality of turbo spin echo (TSE) diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and echo-planar imaging (EPI) of the oral cavity region. This retrospective study included 26 patients who had undergone both TSE- and EPI-DWI. Misregistration of DWI with T2-TSE images was assessed in the oral cavity. We also compared geometric distortion, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), contrast, and the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) for the tongue parotid gland, and spinal cord. On a 5-point scale, 2 radiologists scored the TSE- and EPI-DWI of each patient for ghost ar

Single-shot echo planar imaging (EPI) of a mouse brain at high field is very challenging. Large susceptibility-induced gradients affect much of the brain volume, causing severe image deformations and signal loss. Segmented EPI and other conventional multi-shot approaches alleviate these problems but suffer from lower temporal resolution and motion artifacts. We demonstrate that interleaved snapshot EPI represents a simple and robust alternative approach and one that is particularly suitable for high-field T2*-weighted functional imaging of a mouse brain. Similarly to segmented multi-shot techn

Using echo-planar (EP) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow patterns have been demonstrated in the normal subject and patients with pathological conditions including communicating hydrocephalus, aqueduct stenosis and syringohydromyelia. Snap-shot imaging times of 128 ms allow detailed demonstration of transient intraventricular CSF flow patterns, which is not possible with conventional MRI. The potential of EPI as a method for qualitative and quantitative assessment of CSF dynamics is illustrated.

Echo-planar techniques in MRI use a rapidly oscillating frequency-encoding gradient with the potential to produce peripheral nerve stimulation. To evaluate the incidence, type, and location of stimulation in a commercial whole-body scanner, we studied two groups: (a) 173 consecutive individuals scanned by echo-planar imaging for other purposes and (b) seven subjects who were scanned with an extensive set of 36 echo-planar sequences (with prompting after each scan to report any peripheral nerve stimulation) to test the effects of various parameters. Although only 5% of group A reported symptoms

The aim of this study was to investigate the utility of different gadolinium-enhanced T1-weighted gradient-echo techniques in excretory MR urography. In 74 urologic patients, excretory MR urography was performed using various T1-weighted gradient-echo (GRE) sequences after injection of gadolinium-DTPA and low-dose furosemide. The examinations included conventional GRE sequences and echo-planar imaging (GRE EPI), both obtained with 3D data sets and 2D projection images. Breath-hold acquisition was used primarily. In 20 of 74 examinations, we compared breath-hold imaging with respiratory gating.

PURPOSE: To describe the impact of macroscopic magnetic field gradients (MFGs) in the phase-encoding direction on MR images acquired with an asymmetric spin echo (ASE) sequence with echo-planar imaging (EPI) readout.
METHODS: In EPI, the center of k-space is read out at a shifted time point in the presence of phase-encoding direction MFGs. The ASE signal equation was extended to account for a locally varying temporal offset τ eff $$ {\tau}_{eff} $$ between the spin echo and echo time due to MFGs. The impact on estimated quantitative blood oxygen level dependent (qBOLD) parameters was asse

Objective.Four-dimensional diffusion-weighted imaging (4D-DWI) offers enhanced soft-tissue contrast for image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) compared to conventional 4D-magnetic resonance imaging. However, its clinical application has been hindered by geometric distortion or prolonged acquisition times. This study introduces an improved respiratory-correlated 4D-DWI technique to address these critical limitations.Approach.The proposed 4D-DW-PROP-EPI-JBCR technique consists of four stages: data acquisition, coil sensitivity and phase error maps estimation, retrospective data sorting, and a joint-bl

A multislice EPI sequence was used to obtain functional MR images of the entire rat brain with BOLD contrast at 11.7 T. Ten to 11 slices covering the rat brain, with an in-plane resolution of 300 microm, provided enough sensitivity to detect activation in brain regions known to be involved in the somatosensory pathway during stimulation of the forelimbs. These regions were identified by warping a digitized rat brain atlas to each set of images. Data analysis was constrained to four major areas of the somatosensory pathway: primary and secondary somatosensory cortices, thalamus, and cerebellum.
