Introduction The Falkland Islands are a remote archipelago of over 740 islands and host a diverse, multicultural society. Since 2013, consistent efforts to improve and protect children's oral health have been applied and evaluated, and the results after a decade are presented. Methods Child dental health surveys aligning with the World Health Organization methodology have been conducted annually since 2013 (exceptions: 2015 and 2020). Data analysis was undertaken to establish a mean dmft/DMFT (decayed, missing, and filled primary teeth/decayed, missing, and filled permanent teeth) for five-year

Attempts to control cystic echinococcosis (CE) caused by Echinococcus granulosus in the Falkland Islands have been ongoing for over 50 years. No human cases have been recorded since the 1980s but there is a need to establish if the parasite has been completely eliminated from domestic animals. A study was carried out in 2018/2019 to identify dogs infected with E. granulosus using copro-antigen and copro-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis. In addition, annual slaughter data were analysed to establish infection levels of E. granulosus and 2 other taeniid parasites. Results showed that 4 ou

Throughout the history of war, there have been many instances when the cold has ravaged armies more effectively than their enemies. Delineated risk factors are restricted to negro origins, previous cod injury, moderate but not heavy cigarette smoking and the possession of blood group O. No attention has been directed to the possibility that abnormal blood constituents could feasibly predispose to the development of local cold injury. This study considers this possibility and investigates the potential contribution of certain components of the circulating blood which might do so. Three groups o

Seabirds are important apex predators and valuable sentinels of marine ecosystem health. Because they integrate signals from multiple trophic levels, their diet provides important insights into marine food-web dynamics, gastrointestinal parasite fauna, and the impacts of human activities. Changes in diet composition can affect seabird reproductive success, health status and parasite load. Many protozoan and helminth parasites depend on predator-prey interactions to complete their life cycles, making dietary analysis a useful tool for understanding parasite transmission and ecology. Here, 82 pe

The Argentinean short-finned squid (Illex argentinus) is an oceanic, neritic species widely distributed off the east coast of South America, representing the most abundant commercially exploited squid species in these waters. Despite the great commercial importance of Argentinean short-finned squid as a food resource, and as frozen product exported to Europe, the presence of zoonotic anisakid nematodes, especially in the mantle of the squid, is poorly known. The occurrence and site of infection of larval ascaridoid nematodes in 70 I. argentinus caught off the Falkland Islands were investigated

The perciform notothenioid fish Eleginops maclovinus, representing the monotypic family Eleginopidae, has a non-Antarctic distribution in the Falkland Islands and southern South America. It is the sister group of the five families and 103 species of Antarctic notothenioids that dominate the cold shelf waters of Antarctica. Eleginops is the ideal subject for documenting the ancestral morphology of nervous and sensory systems that have not had historical exposure to the unusual Antarctic thermal and light regimes, and for comparing these systems with those of the phyletically derived Antarctic s

Biogeographic controversies surrounding the widespread freshwater fish, Galaxias maculatus, were addressed with DNA sequence data. Mitochondrial cytochrome b and 16S rRNA sequences were obtained from representatives of six populations of this species. Substantial levels of cytochrome b (maximum 14.6%) and 16S rRNA sequence divergence (maximum 6.0%) were detected between western Pacific (Tasmania-New Zealand) and South American (Chile-Falkland Islands) haplotypes. A considerable level of divergence was also detected between Tasmanian and New Zealand haplotypes (maximum 5.1%) and within and amon

The macroalga Macrocystis pyrifera ("giant" or "bladder" kelp) plays a vital role in cold-temperate marine ecosystems but faces increasing threats from ongoing environmental change. Understanding its population diversity and connectivity is essential for predicting future range shifts and assessing the ecological consequences of such shifts in both present and novel ranges. Here, we used high-resolution genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) to investigate the population structure of M. pyrifera within and among populations in Aotearoa (New Zealand), Lutruwita (Tasmania), and Falkland Islands/Malvinas

BACKGROUND: The northern rockhopper penguin (Eudyptes moseleyi) is a threatened species, listed as Endangered globally by the IUCN owing to rapid population decreases in the past, combined with a limited distributional range. Their breeding is confined to five islands in the central South Atlantic Ocean (Gough, Nightingale, Inaccessible, Alex (= Middle), and Tristan da Cunha) and two islands in the southern Indian Ocean (Amsterdam and Saint Paul). Non-breeding birds forage widely in these oceans and vagrant individuals have been recorded in the Falkland Islands/Malvinas, South Africa, Kerguele

A control programme directed against Echinococcus granulosus was introduced into the Republic of Cyprus in 1971. In 1974, this was restricted to the areas controlled by the government of the island. The force used in the 'attack' phase included a major dog control programme. This and other measures led to the rapid 'disappearance' of the parasite and control was terminated in 1985. Subsequent studies during 1993-1996 revealed that the parasite was present in 82 (20%) villages in either dogs or food animals or both and control was re-introduced in the 'consolidation' phase with emphasis on the

The Magellanic Penguin ( Spheniscus magellanicus) is native to Argentina, Chile, and the Falkland/Malvinas Islands, and is a regular winter migrant in Uruguayan and Brazilian coastal waters. The species is known to be susceptible to a variety of gastrointestinal nematodes, cestodes, trematodes, and acanthocephalans, as well as renal trematodes and pulmonary nematodes. Schistosomes (Platyhelminthes, Trematoda, Schistosomatidae) and microfilariae (Nematoda, Secernentea, Onchocercidae) were histologically identified in Magellanic Penguins ( Spheniscus magellanicus) that died while under care at r

INTRODUCTION: It has been reported in different parts of the world that war veterans are more exposed to cardiovascular risk factors. The objective of this study was to establish the risk factors, the cardiometabolic profile and the prevalence of cardiovascular disease in a group of ex-combatants of the Malvinas War (HdeM).
METHODS: In a case-control design, data from 799 HdeM were analyzed and compared with 799 controls matched by age. The sample was selected from the participants of the Cardiovascular Health Prevention Program of the Favaloro Foundation, between January 2017 and December 20

Glacial episodes of the Quaternary, and particularly the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) drastically altered the distribution of the Southern-Hemisphere biota, principally at higher latitudes. The irregular coastline of Patagonia expanding for more than 84.000 km constitutes a remarkable area to evaluate the effect of Quaternary landscape and seascape shifts over the demography of near-shore marine benthic organisms. Few studies describing the biogeographic responses of marine species to the LGM have been conducted in Patagonia, but existing data from coastal marine species have demonstrated marked

High pathogenicity avian influenza virus (HPAIV) H5N1 reached the sub-Antarctic and Antarctica in 2023, subsequently spreading to remote locations within this region where it had devastating impacts on seal, penguin and albatross populations. The threat to marine wildlife over this broad area exemplifies the need to understand H5N1 long-distance dispersal and evolution. We obtained 104 novel viral genomic sequences from samples that we collected at South Georgia, Kerguelen, Crozet, Prince Edward, Falklands/Malvinas Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula in a region spanning 8,000 kilometers. Little or no acute medical care or evacuation capability was available to resistance forces in the Afghanistan War. We examined the effects of these constraints through a review of 1373 patients admitted to a Pakistani border hospital from 1985 to 1987. Most wounds were to the extremities (92%). Serious complications from injuries were found in 41% of cases, of which the leading causes were soft-tissue infections (36%), chronic osteomyelitis (25%), and marked restriction of joint movement (18%). For 201 patients with known cause of injury, the distribution of responsible weapons was similar to

The inositol phosphates are an abundant but poorly understood group of organic phosphorus compounds found widely in the environment. Four stereoisomers of inositol hexakisphosphate (IP(6)) occur, although for three of these (scyllo, neo, and D-chiro) the origins, dynamics, and biological function remain unknown, due in large part to analytical limitations in their measurement in environmental samples. We synthesized authentic neo- and D-chiro-IP(6) and used them to identify signals from these compounds in three soils from the Falkland Islands. Both compounds resisted hypobromite oxidation and

Ocean warming affects ectotherm physiological and phenological processes, potentially creating mismatches between early life stages and their prey. Seasonal spawning cohorts are thought to provide flexibility in responding to environmental variability, but if there is seasonal adaptation between these cohorts, then they may respond to ocean warming differently, affecting species resilience and potentially impacting the wider food web. We tested the response to warming of egg masses and paralarvae from two spawning cohorts (autumn and spring) of the Patagonian squid (Doryteuthis gahi). Treated
